ok, VERY lightly wink i burned it yesterday and it's only a tiny bit red now... so nothing to worry...
(i burned my chin during fire-spitting)

and i was wondering is some of you got wonderful tips? i spit with >99.9% parraffin lampoil (it says on the bottle)... so I guess that's ok. Are there any other tips? (like: never spit fire when there's lampoil on your chin biggrin )

BTW: a friend of mine convinced me to try fire-spitting, at first i was like NO WAY, but i did it anyway and it ROCKS!

It's fire breathing; following the link will tell you all you need to know about fuel, tips and the dangers.

https://www.homeofpoi.com/articles/FireBreathing.php

My personal advice is to not do it; too many people have died (many of them very experienced) and two of my friends (real life ones, not internet contacts) have now been seriously hurt by it.

can firebreathing be done with something that is far less bad for you? like absinth? (though quite expensive)... is it possible?

*edit*

i see, the article is very clear... so now I really need an answer to the above question. i dont wanna die by doing something cool.

One was hurt in a one-off incident where the actual breathe went fine; but immediately afterward an accidental inhilation of unburnt aspirated fuel (droplets in the air) lead to a long stay in hospital. The toxic vapour caused some kind of very serious immune system response which was potentially fatal.

The other is a girl I met recently who didn't have an accident as such, but long-term fire breathing over many years has left her with much diminished lung capacity.

Ok, that's clear. It's very bad for me and so.

But I still haven't got an answer to my question if it cán be done with some other fuel that is less bad for me, like absinth (75% alcohol) or strorum (80% alcohol)...

Here's a quote from the HOP FAQ-

'Use of any fuel with combustible fumes means that a blowback is more likely to occur. These dangerous fuels are gasoline, naphtha fuel and those labeled 'white gas', butane, and any form of alcohol including ethyl (drinkable) alcohol. '

There's been several posts here on alcohol and fire breathing, so doing a search should turn up information.

But one thing to bear in mind is that, as well as the danger mentioned in the FAQ quote; there's the problem that putting high-percentage alcohol in your mouth leads to absorbtion which leads to intoxication.

(apparently there have been cases of performers doing a gig, being pulled over on the way home, breathalised and found to be over the limit, purely through the fuel they used at the gig)

Being intoxicated (drunk) while fire spinning is a big no-no.

Why don't you focus on fire spinning instead? Admittedly it's harder to learn, but, unlike fire breathing, it'll actually be good for you, will give you a skill that not only looks amazing, but one that you can teach to others (and therefore help with meeting loads of people) with a clear conscience.

You'll also stand out from the crowd- anyone can learn to fire breath (admittedly badly, with no appreciation of safety) in minutes- these days there's always some goon at a party who'll try to show off by spurting something out of his/her mouth and lighting it.

i read something about soybean oil? does it work well enough?

i read it's less change of blowback, even compared to lampoil and it's far less toxic than lampoil... true?

Ok on fuels, don't use high-percentage alcohol(s) for all of the above reasons and more that your will find in various threads, there are alternatives although none that I'd feel particularly comfortable in recomending, I've been looking into colouring fire breathing and have thus been exploring other fuel options, I've looked at soya bean oil, and a range of vegtable cooking oils, they are incredibly difficult to ignite, and burn very poorly compared to parafin etc, even using very large breathing torchs for ignition, on a plus point though cooking oils are less toxic than lamp oil(s)

Anonomatos, any fuel you can use will be bad for you, it just d epends on what fuel. Naturally some things like biodiesel or cooking oil will be much less bad for you (although ingesting that much oil, won't do your body any good). It won't have the same poison effects as kero might, but then again, it won't breath as well as kero would.
Blowback is always a risk, especially if you don't know what you're doing. When people say there is less chance of blowback, they mean to say "If you know what you're doing and are experienced, this fuel has less of a chance of blow back compared to white gas", and even then, sometimes even the best get a blow back.

On a side note, I know a performer that does use alcohols for Fire Breathing, and more than that, he uses various chemicals and metalic dusts in his fuels (if you want info check out the colored fire article) as well. It looked really cool, but I don't even want to know how messed up his body is going to be soon. He has to have someone nurse him back to health after every show.

Fire Breathing is the MOST DANGEROUS of any fire art, please, don't jump into it like you are now. It's good that you're asking us for help, but don't turn away our advice regarding fire breathing as a whole.

Do some searches- everything you need to know is on this board somewhere.

To start you off here's a search done with the following string-

"fire breathing" +oil +alcohol

type that into the search box and you'll get a page of results -

which includes: -

a thread on ARDS (firebreathers lung) with plenty of stuff about alcohol as a fuel, and-

please dont go firebreathing with absinthe.

or meths.

the difference between these and parrafin is that the first two are much more volatile and leave a flammable vapour.

go to a large peice of concrete pour out a shot of meths and light it, it may even light before the match touches the liquid.

now try the same thing with parrafin, i gauruntee you this will not work.

you are really increasing your chances of an accident using anything but parrafin.

same when you spin

there is a product specifically made for firebreathing called firewater, but it really doesnt make any difference to the dangers which dave has already pointed out.

it has the advantage of when you breath indoors or onstage you dont cover everthing infront of you with unburnt parrafin but thats about it.

get some poi, your fitness goes up not down

Fire spinning is not only safer than Fire Breathing, it is also more fun, more fulfilling and can give you a longer show time wink Instead of 2-3 seconds of fire breathing, you can do 2-3 minutes of spinning.

I think I have enough answers... and you know, I'm not really a 11 year old kid who doesn't know what I'm doing.

I KNOW IT'S VERY BAD FOR ME AND THAT IT'LL KILL ME!

But that was not my questions.

I'm not intend to do it daily, far from it. I did it a few times, and the next time (if there ever is one) will be in a very, very, very very very long time. But I wanted to know íf there would be a next time, what I could use best.

Luckily I got all the answers to my questions now.
...thank you.

Has anyone tried using Citronella oil to breathe with? I've only used that so far to spin with and it's a pretty good fuel. From the MSDS it sounds like it wouldn't be *as* dangerous as kerosene etc to your body if you swallow it or breathe it in.

Dude, you've smelt that stuff when you spin with it right? That's enough of a reason not to breath with it. I'm willing to bet it's strong enough to damage your mucus.

If you read my post, I said that I only spin with it and I was *asking* if it was any good. I personally find it to smell better than kerosene but I guess that's just down to taste. The reason that I thought it would be good to breath with is that it's pretty much a more flammable vegetable oil and the MSDS sheet said it's not as toxic as the other fuels people seem to use here (although it is still toxic). It surely can't be any more disgusting that holding kerosene in your mouth.

And what's this 'fire water'?

Biodiesal (a derivitave or refined soy oil) in it's cleanest form is slightly healthier for fire breathing with because it will not eat your stomach lining away if you accidently swallow some, isn't aslikely to give you mouth cancer, and tastes a hell of a lot better than parain or even alchohol, but:

1. most biodiesal still has additives or chemicals left from the refining in it which take away most of the benifits besides the taste.

2. you will get a much smaller fireball from it because it is less combusable

3. after you breath, everyone will wonder why you smell like a McDonalds fry vat.

4. Biodiesal (and ANY other chemical that gets into your lungs) will still give you ARDS!!!!

basically due to the difficulty in obtaining it and the significantly reduced fireball size, most fire breathers don't use biodiesal

One piece of advice for everyone..

NEVER EVER USE FIRE WATER FOR FIRE BREATHING
i am serious. not only is it very very dangerous. It is firebreathing that will eventually get this fuel taken off the market. have you ever read the info about fire water? it says specifically to never use it for breathing.
its great for toys but not mouths. the australian supplier of firewater (juggleart) are constantly being contacted by doktors accross the country asking how to save the life of someone who has used this fuel for breathing.

Please, i dont condone fire breathing, but if you are going to do it, dont use fire water
