Actually, they're really cool. Every government building is supposed to have one. Our school certainly has a few. It's NOT the paddles that you see on TV. It only administers a shock if it's hooked up correctly to someone who the machine has determined is having a heart attack.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

hrmmm

The defibrillators hanging about on walls made me distinctly nervous.

How does the machine 'know' if you're having a heart attack?
And Who knows how to use the machine?
It conjures up hopeful images in my mind of little signs on the box saying "break glass with first aid certificate" (to get to the defib, if that phrase doesn't translate accross oceans).
I certainly wouldn't want any old passerby shocking me eek

Also, a paramedic on there makes a very strong point against them, saying that in his over 5 years of being a paramedic, he can count the number of people he's saved them with them on one hand (despite having used them on dozens of people) and then only with lots of surgical drugs... none of which would be available if you had this machine.

He says he's never heard of a case of them working without the drugs as well.

Besides, the likelihood of it actually being used if you bought it for your home is incredibly small. How many of you have had a cardiac arrest recently? ubblol
