Actually, they're really cool. Every government building is supposed to have one. Our school certainly has a few. It's NOT the paddles that you see on TV. It only administers a shock if it's hooked up correctly to someone who the machine has determined is having a heart attack.

The defibrillators hanging about on walls made me distinctly nervous.
How does the machine 'know' if you're having a heart attack?
And Who knows how to use the machine?
It conjures up hopeful images in my mind of little signs on the box saying "break glass with first aid certificate" (to get to the defib, if that phrase doesn't translate accross oceans).
I certainly wouldn't want any old passerby shocking me
