Anyone in Melbourne? Lots.
Got to the gatherings section, and you'll find two major nights.
Wednesday nights at Edinburgh gardens in North Fitzroy start at about 9 pm. There's alway more people there, however I believe that it's more a show-off night.
Sunday nights at Alexandra gardens opposite the arts centre start at 7 pm. Although most people dont get there till after 8. I'm a big biased because I organised this night, however I think there is more scope for teaching/learning because it starts while there is some light.

Geez, I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Hey Sheridan,

Its good to see we have more new pplz getting into the sport(fire spinning is so a sport!!!). Only a year a and bit ago i was in the same situation as you were. I didnt know anyone in the firey world, and wanted to learn as much as i possibly could. I would suggest that you try to get down there at about 7pm at Alexandra Gardens on Sunday nights because there are some really amazing people down there. I used to go down and get there early, just trying new stuff out without fire. Then i met this New Zealand guy who really showed me the ropes. He showed me most of the basics and sent me home with a few little tasks.

We got talking and he found out i used to do gymnastics, so he suggested that i mix them together.

Soz, i kinda rambled on there. So my point is, get there earlier and try to seem really keen. They love to teach spinning to people who really want to learn.

I can't wait to die, I'm going to Hell. They have fire down there!

from the weather report, i gather its gonna be a bit warmer by sunday..27 degrees so far. but hey, when have weather reports been accurate? biggrin

How much longer will it take to cure this

Uhoh... I think you may have gone to the wrong park. It's a bit confusing as there are both the Alexandra and Alexandria gardens in Melbourne.
Sunday nights are held in the city, opposite the arts centre, a short walk from Flinders Street station. If you're a little confused still (as i'm terrible at giving directions) pm me, and I'll give you my mobile number and meet you on a train.

Currently in the UK, thinking (seriously this time) about coming to Australia for about a year this coming september

Will probably be based in Sydney as I relatives there who can (hopefully) put me up (or put up for me) for a few weeks before I settle on where I wanna stay. And how I'm gonna get to where I wanna go.

I'll try and ply my freelance design/illustration trade around the area too.

So the question is... how often do people meet about Sydney/Melbourne and do they plan regular trips into the outback?

melbourne has several weekly gatherings, most of them simple to get to via public transport.

sydney (when i last checked) isnt so regular, but i may be wrong.

hmm, im still yet to go to the outback, unless you mean out back, in my backyard, i was there earlier today biggrin

cheers, pete hug

The outback?
Well, to be honest Ozpeople tend to stick to their comfortable coastal cities and never go outback at all. More likely to go to Thailand than a few hundred miles inland. The distances are large (Melbourne to Brisbane is further than, say, London to Madrid...) But it is actually quite easy to get around. Fly, get on a train or a coach or preferably buy a car. There's any number of adventure tours, 4WD trips etc ... The place is fully equipped for every sort of tourist/visitor. No worries mate!

cheers for the responses anyway...

So looking forward to coming over there. Might be beneficial to my mental health as I seem to be an avid SAD sufferer... the Australian weather would be a nice place to escape the godawful bleakness of British winter..

wednesday nights ROCK. it isn't a show-off time! it's just a social gathering for hippies and we happen to twirl there. spectators are not welcome, so if people come to it, they have to either twirl or socialise.

between the confests, while the weather is warm, there are usually drummers. there are always friendly faces.

About the only thing that stops edinburgh gardens from burning on wednesday nights is weather. if it's too cold for twirling clothing, or too windy. rain doesn't always stop us because there is a gazebo, but it does occasionally.

usually get peaks of one or two hundred people in january, dropping off to maybe half a dozen around the middle of winter when pretty much only the hippies and the hardcores go (*points at bender*) (*waits for bender to point back*)

wednesday night is, after all, the hippies' saturday smile
the hippie week runs like this .. wednesday is the first day .. or saturday rather .. then the thursday is a sunday to recover from the night before. The friday is spent driving to whichever piece of desolation where someone has put a sound system, satuday and sunday spent pounding the earth flat and making sure grass will NEVER grow there again. Mondays are spent driving home or recovering, or both .. and tuesday is the working week.
do you see why hippies are so poor? they can only work one day a week! and so dirty? they spend half the week away from the shower at home!

burn 'em all smile
