I grew up with migraines, every week or so. But I had a migraine tonight that was extreamly [censored] up. I could barely walk, kept pukeing (which made it hurt 2x as bad) and I was getting weird visuals.. warping my vision thought I was haveing a stroke or something. Called 911 and they showed up, diagnosed it as an "aural migraine" and gave me a bunch of muscle relxants, ibuprofen and bought me a coffee. It went away in like half an hour. Now I feel like a rag doll. But I wasted these guys time on a busy friday night over a bloody head ache. All the neighbours are probably wondering what the hell is up, since they accidentally stepped on the air horn pedal which felt like a whip across my spinal cord.

Migraines cab affect your reality so you are a danger to yourself and others. I am sure you did the right thing. How did they seem, the paramedic guys.

ah, don't worry... I don't think they'd have bought you a coffee if they'd been really pissed off at you! I've only had migraines twice after a bad car accident, but from what I remember if it was an especially bad one I can understand why you called them smile

my sister works in the emergency department in a hospital, and they get people coming in with stubbed toes, period pain, acne and a whole lot of things of that type. it's so commonplace they come to expect it. I't probably was a bit of a relief for them having something they could easily fix, not life or death stuff. glad you're feeling better hug

I don't think there is anything wrong with what you did at all. I've been rushed to the ER with ones before. Admittedly, my migraines are very stroke like - half my body goes numb and I can't formulate proper speech, but the medics are very much the people to have helped in such a situation. That is what they get paid for. You could have had something much more serious (like an anuerism (sp?)). You had no way of knowing, and the pain in your help certainly wasn't helping you to think things through yourself.

I'm just happy to hear that you are ok and it wasn't something a whole lot more serious.

You were lucky you got an ambulance. When my friend was living in london he had the same as you (a extreamly bad migrain). He couldn't walk so phoned for an ambulance but they said he didn't warrant one for just a migrain. They told him to get a taxi. So he did. Only to lose conciousness as he was getting out at A+E. They were later to find out that he had the highest level of meningitis for someone to make a full recovery. He spent 2 months in intensive care.. When he was better they said he was very lucky because he was hours away from having perminant damage. And if he hadn't of been such a big bloke (19 stone) things could of been a lot different.

Guess what im trying to say is if your ever in doubt always phone. Luckily things turned out ok for you but dont feel like you were waisting there time. It could of been a very different story. Glad your ok. wink

Never underestimate a head ach man, specially a migraine. My girlfriend gets them, iv had to carry her into the doctor, she was throwing up, and they had to put her on a drip and give her alot of shots and rest, before she could even walk again.

There is a good thread round here about migrains written by OWDave. I also read info on the net about triggers, and they say it takes more than 1 trigger to set it off.

worth researching it stop it from happening again.

I remember that the only time in my life that I've actually seriously contemplated suicide (throwing myself off a balcony) was in the throes of a migraine. I've spoken with women who have had amazingly complicated deliveries and they say that a strong migraine can outshine childbirth by a mile.

Don't feel dumb. You've been through one of the most painful experiences a human being can. And I'd rather you call 911 and get it dealt with that way than try to drive to the ER and get in a wreck on the way. Then the 911 call would be for real.

Snork, I know what you mean by the strange visuals you were having. The last time I had an aural migraine (I get migraines now and then, but not nearly as bad as some people I have talked to about it in mirgaineur workshops, info sessions etc...), I was writing a test in school. Couldn't make out the test sheet, and managed to crawl my way into the bathroom to throw up. My friends carried me outside because they just thought I was on drugs or something and they let me throw up the entire contents of my stomach. After it subsided a bit I managed to call my mother and she took me straight to the hospital.
I kinda felt silly going to the hospital for a headache, much along the lines of what I assume you were thinking. They told me that I was lucky it was a migraine and not one of many other things, but that I did the right thin in coming to the hospital (better late then never).
They are horrible things to experience, and I hope they don't return to you man.
Don't stress out over it to much, hopefully you won't have to meet the medics again under a worse conditions next time :P Maybe you could buy them a coffee and return the favor ^.^'

I once left work on a stretcher from a migraine (which actually may have been complicated by carbon monoxide poisoning). Migraines can be bloody dangerous and can mimic the symptoms of a lot of other problems, including stroke.

When I have a migraine I go aphasic, so someone else would have to call 911. Or I could call them and say "og dorgic maglu bont gruffi" until they trace the call.

So that's what it's called. I get that way too. It freaks just about everyone out and has worried many a person around me when I've gotten them.

I once went to a choir rehearsal with a migraine. This one wasn't bad in terms of pain, but the SFX were pretty wild (colors that don't exist, stuff like that). The aphasia kicked in about halfway through the rehearsal, and the choir director gave us a new piece.

I could read the music, but not the text. I sang it "blug blug blug" all the way through.

Next rehearsal, no migraine, the music was familiar, but the text was brand new, as if I'd never seen it before.

The human brain is very complex, and doesn't work at all how you'd think it would.
