Working on five ball cascade I tend to be getting 100-140 throws.

I never used to count because I found it too distracting, but have been finding it better since I started to used the method of just counting one ball every time the right hand throws it, and then multipying by ten.

Even so, I do sometimes feel that even this distracts, and I tend to spend just as much time forgetting the count and just focusing on trying to cut down the flaws in my pattern (trying to get the peaks same height, trying to up the amount of time the ball is held in each hand, trying to slow the pattern down etc).

The problem is that, I obviously can't judge if juggling without counting results in more throws or not, as I'm not counting!

What's the accepted wisdom (if any) on this amongst decent 5 ball/numbers jugglers: -

1. does counting distract

2. do numbers jugglers generally count whilst practicing

3. do any decent numbers jugglers never count

I just managed to get the 4 ball reverse cascade (for some reason I learn things in reverse first...I don't know why, but revese 3b cascade was a snap, but regular cascade took me a few days to get).
I know that when I count I get a little distracted from my patterns and get more focused on trying to make sure I count everyball. I think it helps you keep a more steady pattern, but I believe something like timing your self on how long you can go works alot better.
Put on a 1 minute song and see if you can do the 5b cascade for the entire song with out messing up. If you make that, let the songs get longer and longer as you go.
That way you don't have to concentrate on counting the balls, and can put your mind on your patterns.

i tend to find that i juggle a lot better with music in my ears really loud too!.
that way im focused, i can be aware of others around me and also count at the same time, ive done that since learning to juggle so it doesnt put me off, i think last week i broke 90 with 4 ball cascade but my highest count on 5 is around 9.... must to do more 5 ball juggling.

i still can't count my 5 balls without losing my concentration! juggle best i managed counting was 27 but i know i've juggled for longer.... although you don't feel like you've reached a level until you've counted to prove it. i will count 50 one day, maybe your one ball technique will come in useful in my quest... smile

I never count. My best 5b is 7mins 42secs. I always time myself, cos i always find counting too hard and it puts me off. I know one numbers juggler who always counts everything, but i think he's been doing that for years. My personal philisophy is that to see how long you can go for you should time yourself, not count. Counting catches can get to be more important than the cascade which is what you should be concentrating on.

On 7b i generally get someone else to count for me...my best at this is 46 catches which i did about 16 months ago. I've had longer runs since (probably 70-100 catches), but I never sem to get them when someone's counting. When i can consistently get 7b for over ten seconds or so i might try timing myself then.

Sometimes it is helpful to stop counting and concentrate on the cascade. Do this for sometime and then go back to counting. It's amazing how when you know you are nearing a record you can drop for no apparent reason frown

I just did this for 5b bouncing and my best time more than doubled!! bounce

hello!

I almost always count, but then i counted when I learnt 3 too, but not so much with 4... hummm

I find it just gives me incentive to keep going, but it does tend to mean that as soon as I get near to a record I have to really keep myslef calm in order to keep going, but thats good practice in itself. and counting is good practice, specially if you have to count other peaples 7 ball records... wink

I do have breaks where i just juggle and keep the pattern, but then i have a long run and am anoyed I dont know how long it is, you know how time dialates when your concentrating.

besides, sometimes I find it usefull to split you attention from the thing your actually doing, but thats a whooole other post.

seems strange to me what a non juggle considers 5 ball juggling. he was impressed my my 3 balls though.

It's amazing how much it takes to impress non-jugglers though -.-
I can sit against my locker doing a 3 ball cascade, and people will watch me for all 100 throws (I practice 3 ball cascades for 100 throws (both regular and reverse) before I start, just to make sure I warm up all the muscles before I start any tricks).
Then there are other people who don't know squat and want to see 10 balls in the air before they are impressed -.-' fat chance on that one ^.^'
It depends on how cool the person is :P
