Wood is just fine but youll be cutting down greatly on the burn time since the core wont absorb fuel. Ive never personally made any but some other options are a smaller monkey fist knot or a ball of absorbant natural fabric (cotton/denim/wool).

Let's turn those old bridges we crossed into ashes.
We'll blaze a new trail,
and torch the rough patches.

If we as members of the human race practice meditation, we can transcend our fear, despair, and forgetfulness. Meditation is not an escape. It is the courage to look at reality with mindfulness and concentration. Thich Nhat Hanh

I use a small cylinder of solid aluminum, drilled and tapped to accept a stainless steel eye bolt (for connecting to the chains). It won't absorb extra fuel, but I like the weight it adds.

Yellow and blue make green.

Metal core in a monkey-fist = masochism.

Monkeys are already heavy when they've taken fuel! You won't be needing anything heavier, in my opinion!

What a wonderful miracle if only we could look through each other's eyes for an instant.

Yes, I understand what you mean wink

I was making a silly joke based on a very old poem about fleas. Which no-one found funny frown ubblol
Except me tongue

when I made monkey fists, I did a fig8 knot, then did a 2 bight monkey around that, then a 4 bight monkey around that. You might find 3/8" (about 9mm) rope easier than 1/2" (12mm).

I should also tell you to do a search, because there's lots of information about this on here already:
https://www.homeofpoi.com/search/search.pl?Terms=monkey+fist&x=0&y=0

(bight is a term for what you're calling ply or fly)
