Posted:Hey folks... hoping you're all kinds of splendid.

I've recently started contact staffing, and as is to be expected I have some bruising. My question is, for those of you who have experienced this, did it take awhile for your muscles to get used to it, and did the bruising subsequently grow less sever over time? I know when I first started firetwirling years ago, the muscles and tendons running down from the fingers into the wrist were obviously being used in a new way. I had my wrist bandaged for a week.

I have bruising from belting myself behind the ear and such; but I also have bruising from gripping the staff with the crook of my arm. For example (and sorry, but I am unfamiliar with the terms) I pass the staff horizontally from right elbow to left, grip it with the left and push it under the armpit in a vertical wrap, send it horizontally round the back of the neck, and around the throat, and roll it down the left arm and flick off the back of the hand. The bruising is mostly left elbow, specially in the crook of my arm where I've gripped it. Do I just need to toughen up? ubbrollsmile
thankx

i dont think its that you toughen up as much as you actually get a nice part for the staff to move over and whe you start to clean it up is rolls over your body as opposed to bouncing.

if it hurts its not a natrual movement, so find the space for the staff to fall into rather than just puttin the staff where you want it.

Sureau, nice to see someone in this part of the world that likes rubing themselves all over their staff...
IMHO their are two main popular methods to inflicting self harm with a contact stick(s):
A) Using one body part to attack another with the stick (eg a badly botched head catch)
B) Willfully moving your body in a fashion that brings about lasting pain and discomfort (eg jumping on your head)

Going slow will reduce your chances at sucsessfully using tecnique A, whilst paying attetion to what feels natural in terms of body movment will make it much more challenging to use approach B and bend things the wrong way. Becoming more strechy will also hinder for this and may make things feel natural that did not before. ubbangel

If you don't grip the staff hard with your elbow, it can't bruise it.

If your hand is relaxed when the staff smacks it, it'll hurt less.

agreed ubblol ....well, second funniest ubbrollsmile

The bruising is definitely less since the movements have become cleaner, smoother, and more relaxed. Picked up another couple of moves last night, and so far no bruising or belting. I started a circus course tonight, so muscles are feeling interesting anyway... ubbloco
