Oh jeez I have like NO time to explain the details but I'll be at a memorial later on today and they want to do a chalk outline of the body and then light it on fire. I figured they had all the details figured out but I just got a call and I think they need help. They were actually going to use the same lamp oil that we were going to use but that's obviously NOT going to work.

The best idea I had was outlining it in kevlar 1/4" rope that had been soaked in whitegas.

Two factors: It's windy. It's cold. So I don't even think that a whitegas outline would work all that well.

Anybody got any better ideas?

Recap: They wanted to spray some fluid on the ground in the shape of a chalk outline and then light it. How do I do it?

I'll post more details about the event later. Or, if you're in New York, it should be all over the news.

Why is the most qualified chemicals person asking a 'bunch of stoners' (used in the nicest sense of the word) on the internet how to play with chemicals? confused

I've tried getting things to light on concrete before, but have sadely (luckily?) never succeeded really. Unless you use a wick like kevlar rope you'd need something that's flamable enough to burn on it's own, but not explosive. Does pure alcohol work?

That photo doesn't do it justice. It was as the flames were dying down.

It was absolutely beautiful. For those in the NYC area, there's a photo on Page 2 of the NYTimes metro section that shows the entire outline filled with fire.

I've never seen anything burn like that.

i realise i'm too late to help out and it seems your solution worked well (as well as something planned for a memorial can work if you see what i mean frown).

but for future reference for flames on concrete, would napalm have done the trick?

its possibly ruled out due to the bad smell/fumes but you can find a couple of sources online on how to make it and it doesn't sound that tricky (nudges teach for the reaction equations):

jolly roger - check out my corruption of the source for this one - i don't think spreading this information was actually their aim ubblol

sorry miss molly - i could only access the cached version here and that just has stuff you'd expect from a site that tells you how to make napalm (which i guess is pretty work unfriendly anyway!).

i'm guessing it has some dirty pictures?

as i said, it a page that shows you how to make napalm at home which is not exactly kid friendly in itself umm

but i never saw the original page and the cached version i see doesn't have dirty photos.

i did try and edit in time honest! frown

i even reported my post to mods as soon as i posted it so they could take the links down if they thought home-made napalm was not appropriate.

sorry.

again.

just tryiong to help.

I've got a very liberal smut filter. I seriously had a kid taking a test almost look up at my screen at just the wrong time.

Yikes.

they look very work friendly to me, but that could just be my office (where my nickname is pornboy, after they saw the jelly wrestling video before recruiting me) smile
