guys i have a massive problem, i'm in college and i study film and video, which needs alot of attention and its alot of work. i have a deadline set for my first year work to be handed in which consists of around 4 or 5 a3 sketchbooks full of storyboards ideas pages sketches and brainstormes, and another one for theory which is research on films. all of this and 2 films finished and edited by the week starting the 7th of febuary

i've done two sketchbooks and one film unedited....but i cant concentrate on doing the rest of the work........and i really do need to get this done if i wanna stay on this course

i always seem to do this and i never learn my lesson, which of course is get it done at an earlier date, or more gradualy or whatever

has anyone got any suggestions on motivation for this sort of work. confused

Set yourself targets, like "I will work for one hour solid" or "I'll finish this page". Really small targets - they have to be easily achievable. Reward yourself when you reach them...

I'm terrible at deadlines too. I can't work unless I'm under pressure, and it has to be genuine pressure - if it's not the day before the deadline I just can't focus. It's a bit of a nightmare. I pulled off 3 deadlines in one day a few weeks back - it took a lot of coffee but I made it. If I can, you can, I'm sure smile

Im the same also - chief procrastinator extraordinare! And as spure sock, unlses really meaningful deadlines are involved, I just cant work, even if its to do soemthing I really like doing for fun, its hard to get the motivation.

Its effort also, and I think im borne to be lazy on everyone elses behalf, its a tough job, but someones gotta do it biggrin

Its also why a try and fix all the problems around me - its alot easier to sort everyone elses out instead biggrin

Set early deadlines, and stick to them. Make sure you have long-term assignments done a week ahead of time. Then tou have a week to relax, or focus on other things, or revise what you did...

I always set my alarm clock 10 minutes fast. Seems to work well.

yeah, bananas are cool. as others have said, setting realistic goals are important. also, reward yourself when you achive these goals. i think it's important to treat yourself for working so hard, and plan regular breaks, you don't want to burn out.

i joined HoP just as i was finishing my exams last year, and i'm not looking forward to when i go back to uni, very easy to procrastinate when HoP's around!

Bananas are cool.but their full of potassium and you'll die if you eat to many at once.iv found that if you learn to consider doing nothing an activity.and make sure your really tired when you've done nothing, eventually you'll rather work than not.of course ive never actually tested this technique:im far too lazy! but the theory is sound.

If you eat one banana the potassium is good for you coz it causes chemical reactions which make you move about give you energy and stuffs. But everything in moderation as they say.

Nate - I dont think i can give you any good advise coz i was just as bad. I was so close to getting thrown out of college before i got scared into doing all my work.
I guess just dont let it get to the point where you feel like your head will explode. Take breaks to try and avoid that. smile

if you dont have anything to do, and you dont do it, is that procrastinating?

or is that just really stupid?

perhaps you shouldnt bother answering that.

the only motivation you should need is the wanting to do well on the course.
at the end of the day it doesn't matter what any one says to you, ideas etc. you will only do what you want. if you want to pass the course and do well, put in the effort. if not carry on as you are.

i know it sounds mean but its true.

Take a pen and paper, chop up the work you have left to do and then chop up the time you have left to do it in. Divide and conquer the effort needed into the timeboxes you have left.

If you find that distractions are putting you off course (like Hop?), then perhaps you need not give them up. Just make them your reward bit at the end of a good days effort. If you don't make the milestone, deny yourself the distraction. If you can't stick to that.. then lock yourself away till you finish the task.

Like Froggette said, keep your focus on the end-goal and let that motivate you.

ahh so true....

procrastinating? i think i am the essence of procrastination.

there is so much to be done.. but it's always done at the last minute nevertheless.

it's something that's just plain censoreding me off now. Something thats been there all the time and i've had enough.

you know, there's only so much of that magic that helps you finish everything on a deadline. and one day, there just won't be any left.

will i start working before it's too late? i think that's the question.

I don't think I've ever done any work on time, think I got chronic procrastination disorder. I had to leave school 6 months early & failed all but 4 of my exams by default from lack of work (I was predicted 13A*s got a G & one E). Last night I was up til 2am preparing for a Live Sound test today (setup an onstage rig, test & de-rig in an hour), and I've known about it for weeks. Right now I'm supposed to be sanding my bike, but subtitled neighbours & Aphex Twin seems to be more interesting. ho hum
