if you get a magnesium fire going, squirt some water on it. its how incendary bombs originated. the flame will sort of expand upwards for about 5 seconds ish

uh, magnesium fire isn't necessarily the best thing here, I think... it burns VERY VERY hot and the flame shouldn't be looked at directly, for the size fire he'd want for a show, potentially very dangerous, much more than the other suggestions, and far more expensive.

cheap and easy, a baggie filled with custard powder and just a tad of pyrodex mixed in

Q:What's the difference between the Great Highland Bagpipes and the Northumbrian Pipes?
A:The Great Highland Pipes burn longer.

Like MiG said flower, or coffee creamer powder, cinnamon powder, fine dry sawdust. Sprinkle it above the fire. Be careful and start small. smile

yeah, but if you started the magnesium burning in an open container that no one could see into, and have a few mirrors, you could send bright white rays of light out of the bowl type thing, and then the big flame type thing would be quite a surprise, all you'd might need is a small handful of water (i think)

coffe creamer (the non-dairy powder kind) coffee mate works the best for me........

You can't avoid pain by fencing yourself from it.
Some times you need the help of others more than anything else
But you have to let them close enough to help......
People want to be needed, I found that out too

maybe if you had one of those old school bellows, and attached a chamber/miniature bowl or something to the front of it, so the air exiting caused the contents of the mini bowl to go whooshing out?

warning.
dont go for korn flour.
this is the finest of the lot.
korn flour when blown through the air, then lit on fire will cause it to explode. this would make your fuel go everywhere, on fire.
bad
it also sucks in alot of oxygen. so much so, an explosion, big, but not enough to catch anything alight, would cause alot of death due to a lack of oxygen.
also bad

we used hot chocolate powder on cadet camp last year (hilarious bounce) but im not sure how it will hold up to the others.

cheers, pete biggrin
