I asked my (non religious) Jewish boyfriend just today when Hanukkah was, and he told me it was coming up soon. Silly boy!

Hrmm... this totally validates my theory that HoP is overwhelmingly Christian and white. [Yes, I know it's not ALL Christian and white, but that's why I didn't say ALL. wink ]

Since it's Yiddish, the tranlation into "English" has several different spellings...

hannukah

n : (Judaism) an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem in 165 BC [syn: Hanukkah, Hanukah, Hannukah, Chanukah, Chanukkah, Channukah, Channukkah, Festival of Lights, Feast of Lights, Feast of Dedication, Feast of the Dedication]

Each day in the 8 days another candle is lit on the menorah to commemerate the fact that a small amount of oil in the temple lasted 8 days. It's not one of the more religious Jewish holidays but does usually entail the exchange of presents on each of the 8 days.

And then there's the whole dradel game which is one of the better top based gambling games. wink

You guys have really never heard of it or know what it is? That's fascinating. I guess I'm bais living in New York.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

I'm jewish (non-religious) and enjoying the hannukah holiday from school as I write this...

I'm using this break to go to pardes hanna's juggling meeting and film a fire vid with everyone, it'll have fire poi, fire devilsticks, fire clubs, and probably fire staff...

You're probably thinking of Purim. (last year some friends and I went to a Fiddler on the Roof sing-a-long right around Purim, so there were lot's of little kids dressed up there. It was adorable!)
My Dad's family is Jewish, sort of-a lot more so than we are...his grandparents were Russian Jews who came here when they were kids. We don't go to temple or anything (or church, for that matter), but we still do a little to observe the holidays-lighting the menorah, going to Seder for passover at a friends house, etc...
So anyways, Happy Channukah!

of course it is, considering that its an english written site and mostly western people use the net, it sort of makes sense.

In an intersting aside, I had several people wish me Happy Eid via private message.

Perhaps there are a lot of non-white, non-Christians on here, but that they felt it better to communicate via email, PM or post than to put a thread on the board?

(Not that there is anything that exists unless its on the HoP board...)

eek
