I need a free FTP program that is relatively easy to use as I'm quite simple when it comes to computers unfortunately. Can anyone make some recommendations?

Try to find WS_FTP Lite. I don't know if it's still in production though.

I wouldn't recemend the DOS FTP from the command prompt - use IE if you have to! You can FTP from IE by typing ftp://username@ftp.server.com. You can add username:password@ but you should get a prompt for it. It's not secure doing it that way though.

I am assuming you're using Windows...You'll have Konqueror on Linux and connect to server (from the go menu) in finder on OS X.

These are free ones, but most of the time it's worth paying the $15 or what ever for a better one. (WS_FTP Pro is fantastic!)

Oh, don't forget, most good HTML editors have some sort of FTP built in. Dreamweaver does, but it's a bit buggy. Don't use front page for any thing at all. Have a look at Editplus (google search) - it has some FTP functions.

ftp itself isn't a secure protocol. In ie you can just do ftp://username@ip/ and it will prompt you for a password if you just don't want it in the history.

Most networks these days (my own included) will only allow scp file transfer (www.ssh.com produce an excellent client that's free for non commercial use)

You're right, but using IE in that way (username:password@) makes it MUCH worse

I've never seen Filezilla - I'll try it out

i use flashfxp. it isnt really free, but if you get the trial version, after 30 days it takes a little longer to get into, and thats all.
