NYC asked me to post about something i was teaching the other day... so here it is.

its a technique i borrowed form a juggling workshop i did last year.

write down a list of tricks you know, and order them randomly. about 5 if you're a beginner, 10 if you're pretty good, and about 15 if you can follow a conversation between rev and arashi wink

so you might have something looking like this:

1, butterfly
2. btb
3. low reel
4. windmill
5. ttn
6. throw with half turn
7. airwrap
8. mexican wave

clear?
then what you do is take each consecutive pair of moves, and work out the nicest way to get from one to the next in as little time as possible.

*interlude*

so by now you have learnt 7 transitions(if you are doing the sequence above).

now you try to memorise them in order, and try to get from 1 to 8 with as little time possible spent on each 'move'. without actually going and timing it, i reckon you can get through those 8 in about 10 seconds or less if you work at it.

the important thing you are learning is not how to do the moves involved. it is how to transition and flow form one move to the next.

i did this about 10 times one day with ten different sequences, and felt like i was spinning in a totally different way at the end of the day.

enjoy, and don't hesitate to ask for clarification anywhere if you need it.

Thats a really good way of learning.

Can it be applied to learning lecture notes as well?

Oh I did this with a bit of paper hanging off my bookshelf! biggrin bounce

I've got such a bad memory I'd forget what I was doing / Learning and it really helps transitions.

Thne I wrote a computer program a while back that would flash names of moves on the sscreen in big letters from a list. May see If I could dig it out if anyone thinks it could be any use? Then looked into getting it to speak. ubblol

Speak a move

This was all on the Spheruislism site thingy. It did it randomly from the list thougth and no use in the park.

Great idea, bluecat! Sometimes, figuring out transitions is harder than figuring out the moves....sometimes.

That's only eight moves... which doesn't put you into a class of either "beginner" or "pretty good"... and I'm sure that you could understand and follow a conversation between rev and arashi!

i don't think even rev and arashi can follow conversations between rev and arashi ubbloco

I've been meaning to post here to say:
Wicked practice idea, Mr Bloo clap

i might give it a go if i ever actually practice my tricks, rather than spending my time finding new and ever more ugly ones biggrin

slap for arsn.

(i saw duncs avatar)

wait til you see what we had to do in the juggling workshop that this idea came from..:

26 moves in a random order, each with a letter next to it.

then write out your name in tricks, and juggle it without transitive cascades.(i.e without reverting to a basic like 3bt weave in between things)

wargh.

I'd like to add for the first concept of learning, that is good to try the chain, after first to last move, to last to first, to make a full circle smile.

Still takes lots of practice to get the move solid, even though you "got" it. And this technique isnt for learning new moves. Its for learning how to transition from anything into anything.

Let's turn those old bridges we crossed into ashes.
We'll blaze a new trail,
and torch the rough patches.

I like the idea, mainly because it is one i already use, however if you are really bored an want to try developing your transitions, first see if you can do all your tricks backwards as in the reverse direction of poi, (why do i have the feeling i will get a vid of someone doing his tricks while walking backwards?) it's simple enough and most people have mastered it already but for those that haven't it is a useful skill to know, especially when you incorporate jumps and flips into your routine and your orientation changes very quickly, after you have learnt that step go do the transition thing again with all the moves backwards and then mix and match.

That's a great learning routine.

And often a nice combination or new trick will come from
an accidental transition.

Poi's just a collection of tricks without transitions.
Eventually, it's all just transitions, or maybe none
at all..

actually rev, i'm only teasing biggrin

your stuff can (almost) always be understood if the reader actually puts in a little effort.

"I couldn't understand your description" is more often than not another way of saying "I couldn't be bothered to read your description properly".

whoops - that was pretty offtopic

unortunately simon, i'm with the irish contingent here. but it has stopped bothering me now. rev and i exchanged views a little just before spherc collapsed, (incidentally, rev, i sent one out the day it came down, i'm not sure if you recieved it, but it was pretty long and comprehensive about where we needed to go from there), but have agreed to hold slightly differing viewpoints on descriptions of stuff, and respect each other for it.

anyhow. totally off topic, you're all sacked(myself included)

Good bump Poiboy (and thanks for the original post, Blue)! I think I'm going to apply this to hoop practice, as transitions in that realm are what I'm focusing on most at the moment.

noooooooooooooooooo!

not that i'm quite as against plane bending as i used to be, but still, there are thousands of fast transitoins that mean you don't need it.

in any case, i feel my original post is a bit misleading... i'll update it someday (into the book long list it goes... rolleyes )
