pyrotechnics, in this case it looks like a couple of flash pots. You can simulate the effect using fireworks like fountains and such. Either way, be careful, it burns much much hotter than regular fire.

Should have a fountain going, then spin your poi through the fountain to light them ^.^'

Of course, it'd have to be angled so that it doesn't spray anywhere near you...and you'd have to get the trajectory right...but man, now I need to try it ^.^'

I talked to sista firewire on saturday night, whose video I think you are refering to. She did that show the viseo clip is from in conjunction with a profession pytechnician. The particular of what he used she does not know beyond the fact that they were a resticted class of fireworks, meaning you have to have a licence to buy and use them.

back in texas there were a couple fire breathers I knew whose jets I would light my wicks from. You have to use at least a little coleman in your fuel mix when doing this though - if you use pure parafin or lamp oil, then it often won't catch fast enough. The trick waas a fair crowd pleaser though, and usually only took a little hair off my arms....

Yeah, colemans would be in there...although that would make a nice performance outside...
Have a few fountains light up at the same time, then light up off of those... smile
I have to go take this to the festival organizer person and see what they think smile Me thinks I got my self a gig biggrin
