Oh god.

I just heard on Radio 1 that John Peel has died from a massive heart attack while on holiday with his wife in Peru.

For those who don't know, John Peel was Radio 1's most long-serving DJ - there are few people alive who know more about music than him.

He always championed new music and launched the careers of some of Britain's greatest bands.

He'll be missed

i really liked him - he had the best radio voice ever.

i'll miss him for Home Truths on Radio 4 though.

it was the book of my dreams.

I know death comes to us all in the end, but John Peel was just one of those people you thought would go on and on. The radio will never be the same again without his eclectic mix of music. A very sad loss indeed.

A ripple of "what!?" and "you're kidding" just went round my office when someone read this. Radio 1 will never be the same again.

Wow. John Peel with hair... I feel so young biggrin

It's amazing how this man really touched people. And it seems to be such a shock... we've lost so much knowledge with his passing.

one of my all time favorite recordings is actually a Peel session - the 2nd Joy Division Peel session to be exact.

John Peel's influence was wide reaching and even strongly influenced the development of American music in previos decades.

Well done, and may he DJ on in the great studio in the sky!

Fully agree Spanner.

Both my parents are in their early 60s (John Peel was 65) and they were shocked to hear of his death. It has touched everyone.

It's like somebody said before, we never believe that some people - especially someone with so much knowledge and talent - will die someday. I've found myself thinking about that alot today.

I suppose, at least it's a good thing that it was very quick.

frown The voice of radio is dead.

There goes one of the world's few truly 'jolly nice blokes'. It's a testiment to John that amazingly quickly people of all ages have been filling the BBC's tribute pages.

It's hard to explain to non Brits who, and what, John Peel was. The man was a Pirate DJ since the term was invented - quite literally as he sat in a ship off the coast broadcasting illegally and helping launch the new music scene that led us to where we are.

I met him a couple of years ago when we gave him an honourary PhD. He had a gentle and self-effacing humour that had everyone around him laughing. A sad loss indeed.

There is a slight possibility that I am not actually right all of the time.

Many years ago, in my early teens i discovered John Peel doing 10-12pm on radio 1. I used to put the radio under the pillow, so my parents wouldn't know I was listening and not going to sleep.
He changed my life, his programs created my taste in music, he made me the person I am today.
I feel I knew him, he told me about his wife and his kids (on the radio), he made me laugh, made me cry, made me think.
I am so sad that he is gone, I can't believe it, I am totally gutted.

My deepest sympathies to his family and friend.

Here is where I pay my respects to Mr John Robert Parker Ravenscroft. Born in 1939, he has contributed greatly to the world of music in general and has been a staunch upholder of British popular music. I will miss him, his radio shows and his humour, he told it like it is and many people respected him for it.

Fair play John Peel!!

May you rest in peace always.
