Really tricky, and I dont recommend them unless one is confident with isolations, otherwise they look quite ugly.

The essence of hybrid moves is to play an isolation with one, and an extension with the other hand.

In an isolation your hand is spinning Opposite to the Poi-head - and in an extension your hand is spinning With the Poi-head -> So with hybrid moves: If you spin your hands sametime the Poi swing splittime and the other way round.

Try this: Wheel-plane. Shorten only one Poi and play an extension (bigger circle) - play an isolation with the other hand. Hands sametime ubbloco

Once one gets the feeling all moves are possible this way. I recommend starting with 3beat weaves.

Are we talking about both poi having the same centre of rotation - but one is an isolation, the other an arm circle of some kind? So the poi are lined up? If so, the isolation is I suppose optional but does make it easier.

Oh wait, you're not talking about that at all ubblol

the only trial I had with hybrids .. as u call them,
is
left-hand spins a giant wall-planed reel (front)
right-hand does an isolated reel behind the head
... so that you get a circle within a circle

gotta try your weave same-time / split-time stuff ... sounds good

sorry to bump this again but i think i saw it done at falmouth by simon (i think thats who) and i fell in love with it, although i cant do it myself yet. Is this the hybrid move thats being spoken about being antispun?

Indeed it was (simon == simian) although simian does them without shortening one poi and the instructions state in the first post.

The antispin thing is a possiblity dreamt up by Simian and I'm not sure how successful he has been in executing it. I'm having trouble with just plain old hybrids.

Maybe this will help you guys out:

Three beat weave. With the hand that's going over the top of the other hand to the other side, do a giant or long arm circle. Keep this up on both sides until you have a weave with a long arm beat going over the top every time.

Now, with the non-leading hand, follow the motions of the leading hand.

Ta da!! Hybrid weave. smile

Hope this helps.

OMG! this helps sooo much! thank you, i sort of got it on my right hand side, it needs work but i can feel it working. I was to busy trying to iscolate one and follow it round with my other hand, putting too much effort into it i think. This is sooo much easer. thank you!

some sorta two person hybrid type move would be interesting.

One person Isolating a weave / buzzsaw and one framing them with long arm?

i'd forgotten about that. it must have emerged from my unconscious mind during falmouth, when garthy mentioned chocolate.

kinda got it now. generally involves flailing.

the key was working out that one of them needs to be describing a tall thin antispin circle, while the other does a short fat one.

Works quite well done over the head in a windmill style.

I recomend all of you guys and girls to play with hybrids in all moves like weave, buzzsaw, fountains (weave over the while turning), crossover weaves. There are so many ways when you can play with them.

You can do them with hands together or stretched out, beautiful move :P

I LOVE HYBRIDS!

If you give me some days I can make you a vid.

But a short explanation is that you play as usuall(rotationpoint in your hand) with one hand and the other one is isolated?! Got me? confused

And try to keep your hands together to get a good effect.

Once you find the move/feeling you will love it ubblove

You can find a better explanation in the beginin of this topic.

Hybrids are brilliant, simian showed me them at EJC and what I saw garthy doing there was unreal.

I've got a little youtube vid where you can see some really sloppy hybrids, but maybe it'll give you the idea.
