quote:i totally agree with that ... i'm finding that as time goes by i tend to look at stuff like going to the bars all the time in a more critical way. i just seem to want to squander less of my time on stuff that isn't going to have some sort of positive impact on my life.
My view is that nothing is truly fun unless you come out of it changed...even just a little.

quote:I wanted to say to this that BM does not better the world at all. Perhaps a person's concepts of the world, or it inspires the person to go out and change the world, but BM itself has no bearing on the world outside. It is an isolated event in the middle of nowhere. If you want it to change the world, take the proceeds from the really expensive tickets and hand it to charities. Then it will better the world.

what are you doing to better the world by going to burning man my friend? you are speading the joy of free thought and action, and spreading peace wherever you go. remember how you feel when you get back to the regular world? all peaceful and happy, right?

quote:Okay, but if Burning Man inspires someone to go out and change the world, or improve their neighborhood, or improve their own outlook, than you would have to say that Burning Man does change the world, albeit indirectly. "Change our thought and the world around us changes" can't remember who said that originally but i know that i sometimes find inspiration that 'changes my thought' in strange random places and yes, the world around me or at the very least my sense of the world around me does change!

quote:i'm really sorry to hear that i remember having that feeling of being let down by the real world after returning from a 4-day vacation at the casino of all places (ex-boyfriend used to like to stay in the hotel there and "live it up" hmph). when we left it was back to the grind, only now i had a lot less money cause it went into the evil money-making machine and there was no longer any glitz and stuff. such a let-down, i should have given that money to charity! and Burning Man or no, sooner or later drugs always end up making you feel let down and depressed
I know more people who have come out of BM injured, physically and mentally. They don't have a peaceful happy feeling when they are home. They feel let down by the real world and have become depressed by the most usually substance induced ethereal perception they held for the week.
quote:Good idea! But probably what would happen is we'd all go to jail for burnin stuff!
If you want to change the world, hold BM on capitol hill and see what happens.
quote:yeah, that video sucks but it's not surprising that that particular company would thumb its nose at being turned down by BM to film there. shit happens. i have a friend who lives in San Francisco who is an artist and has attended many previous Burning years...he has said that it has indeed gotten more commercialized but he thinks that is only natural for an event that has grown so huge and he insists that it is still an awesome experience for most people. i think a lot of what you get out of it has to do with what your intentions are, and what you personally are "bringing" to the event. i am going to look past some of the negativity surrounding the event and instead use it as yet another tool for personal growth!
since that is caught up in litigation the only statement it is making about BM is how commercial it has truly become.
