I am so jealous. I was in the Conclave last year, but this year I cannot be at BRC. Stoopid medical school.

Have fun. It is the best spin you have ever had or will ever have. You don't get any attention; you're standing among hundreds of fire spinners.

But your'e spinning fire in the Circle with hundreds of other spinners. And it's...well, you'll see. Boy, oh boy, will you see...

But I'll be standing next to you spinning my lil' heart out...in spirit.

just to let you know, not to burst your bubble, but a lot of the more advanced fire people i've talked to don't do that conclave thing, due to the safety/ego issues. drunk people do crazy stupid things, so stay aware of those around you. i heard (HEARD, mind you) that a couple of years ago someone threw gasoline on some girls that were spinning in the middle, and they were burned REALLY bad. that was the last straw for me, i'll never get in there. too much ego craziness for not enough spiritual/artistic benefit. you never know what idiot's got a match. that's just me, tho, have a blast, and best wishes! i'd love to see ya there!

I dont doubt the gasoline thing. not at all. last year there was someone who was used to using kero, and dipped their smoldering wick into some white gas . I dont think I need to tell you all what ended up happening. I guess too many fire spinners without enough safeties in a crazy city can have some adverse effects. oh well, its still gonna be a blast.

At the Burn, the safety thing is very stressed. I saw them turn away a few people who were obviously drunk, and one person who smoked up in front of one of the people in charge.

There is a fuel dump in each quadrant with a lid on it. Our fuel dump actually caught on fire, but our safety put it out.

There are at least two safeties per quadrant. And I didn't see a hell of a lot of ego at all.

Outside of Conclave, people spinning on their own off on the playa do dumb things (spinning in flowing hippie skirts, when they don't even know what they are doing, etc.), but at the Burn, you're spinning within 100 meters of a lot of fireworks. Conclave takes safety very seriously.

actually this year its not quadrants, there are going to be at least ten fuel dumps, but crimson wants to talk them into 14-16 dumps. and alot more safeties per dump then last year, who are instructed to tackle anyone who approaches a dump with a smoldering wick, or even a wick they just used.

I'm sorry you can't make it this year mike. personally I would skip college to go home, but that certainly would screw your doctorate up now wouldn't it? so I'll have a spin in the center ring in your honor.

thats wicked news! i'm a little scared of the whole burning man / wicker man connotations but spinning with other people is always amazing so go for it!!

as for spinning among drunk people, well i'm spinning staff and maybe poi if i'm better by then on stilts in top hat and tails during freshers week in september (kinda like one big piss-up for the university first years mwahahahaha who stagger about drunk)so thats terribly dangerous but going to be so much fun...

sometimes relative risks are worth (thought if my tails go on fire, u'll be the first to hear me scream!)

good luck with it!

Welcome to the Conclave.
It is the best spinning experience I have ever had.
As for drunks--don't believe that crap. No one is allowed in the inner circle if they are drunk or stoned or otherwise unable to spin safely.
Conclave takes safety very seriously. Safety people have their own mandatory meetings. When not spinning, people are assigned safety duties. No one just stands around and watches.
It is good, good, good.
Plus we will have our own fire circle at our camp, the Green Fairy Bar Camp. Drop by for a spin and a glass of absinthe.

Master Na,

I feel a stronger call to medicine than to Burning Man. Burning Man is amazing, fun, inspirational, exciting, yes. But when I am there, what am I really doing to better the world?

I'll go back to Burning Man some day. I wish it was sooner, but giving up Burning Man for my career is not even a tough decision. There are millions of kids out there who I can help, but not by spinning fire.

So for now, I don't have a home. Which is good...a bit of chaos in your life keeps you portable and keeps you young.

what are you doing to better the world by going to burning man my friend? you are speading the joy of free thought and action, and spreading peace wherever you go. each year burning man is a reminder of how great life can be just by spreading a little love, out into the world after you return. remember how you feel when you get back to the regular world? all peaceful and happy, right?

now I'm not saying you should skip out on med school, a career is very important (to most, not me) and you shouldn't give up on your dream just to attend an event that is going to happen over and over again (i hope). besides, you are a fire spinner and I know just by that you already spread peace and love into the world.

and maximus, do you know where your camp is located at? I'd love to swing by and have a spin (the absinthe sounds good too). if not, will you be registering the camp, so I'll be able to find out where its at?

Does Burning Man better the world? I guess. It certainly bettered me and gave me an impetus to better the world.

But let's also not put ourselves under the illusion that by going to Burning Man we are actively tackling any of the world's problems.

Burning man is a huge orgy of sensory (and sensual) stimulation. With a liberal sprinkling of chemical enhancement. It is hedonestic in its very nature, which is why it can last a week...but not much longer.

For some reason, people think hedonism is a bad thing. It isn't. Excess is bad, hedonism isn't. But let's not fall into the trap of trying to justify Burning Man as anything that it isn't. It doesn't need justification. Why have Burning Man? Because it's fun, that's why!

That's why I want to go, anyways. My life doesn't have enough hedonism in it right now. In being a medical student, my life is severely imbalanced towards work. But the timing is bad. Believe me, if UMich didn't start classes on August 19, I'd be at BRC partying my lil' heart out.

Just as well, anyways. I can't afford it.

of course by simply attending the event you are not bettering the world. but like it says on the ticket "PARTICIPATE", and thats what you must to to better the world as a result of burning man. not just in black rock city, but as you venture out into the newly unknown world (does that even make sense?). many of the attendees see it fit to spread the joy out into the world, and create black rock city year round. throwing public events to spread awareness, spreading gifts anywhere they go, and most importantly, leaving no trace wherever they may go. and lets not kid ourselves, burning man is not only sensory and sensual stimulation. its making new friends, and visiting those from past years. its giving what you can because you can. and most importantly its building a tremendous sense of community. a community that streches out around the world. a community that would do anything in its power to help those who need it, even if it is just to burners (which usually isn't the case). and isn't that bettering the world?

Well this will be my first year at Burning Man but I have been to other big festivals with similar participatory, community themes and speaking from those experiences i can say that they help me to "find" myself, get along better with others, embrace the diversity of the human spirit, and want to be a better person and make a difference in the world.
In fact, at the last festival i went to i gained such amazing insight into my life and where i'm at/going that i decided to quit my job (a job which is not fulfilling to me because it doesn't really make a difference in any positive way in the world) and go back to graduate school full-time. I am learning the many benefits both to yourself and others, of following your dreams. I'm giving notice in 2 weeks and despite the fact that my life will probably go into some turmoil as far as finances go, i've never felt more confident in myself or my decisions!
Oh yeah, because of that festival i also decided i had to spin fire
Not in any way suggesting you should skip out on school Mike! Just wanted to relay the way i feel these types of events help to make the world a better place, one person at a time!

Follow your dreams, Mike, that's what Burning Man means to me. I took up firedancing the first year I went. Burning Man changed my life. I quit the shitty job I hated and went back to being an artist.
Our camp is an official theme camp. We don't know the location yet, but it will be on the map and the Green Fairy happy hours will be in the daily schedule (Tuesday through Friday at 4 pm.)

i totally agree with that ... i'm finding that as time goes by i tend to look at stuff like going to the bars all the time in a more critical way. i just seem to want to squander less of my time on stuff that isn't going to have some sort of positive impact on my life.
then again i could just be getting old LOL!

Not true.... at all. That's the impression i had last year before getting into it. Fire Conclave has everything: from the very beginner spinner to the very experienced and professional troupes. I was kind of disappointed because i thought (like you) that i had been admitted into this super elite circle of fire spinners.

Na..... Crimson Rose does not enroll people in the Conclave based on their skill. I think it has more to do with motivation and interest. Anyone who really wants to be in it can.

I don't mean to downplay the experience. It's still a great experience to be in the middle of 400 fire spinners. You don't really get to watch other people (which is a shame if you are near really good ones), but man, what a fire orgy. Also, you get the best seats for the Burn.

And Maximus, I'd like to stop by for a glass of Absinthe as well. :-)

I wanted to say to this that BM does not better the world at all. Perhaps a person's concepts of the world, or it inspires the person to go out and change the world, but BM itself has no bearing on the world outside. It is an isolated event in the middle of nowhere. If you want it to change the world, take the proceeds from the really expensive tickets and hand it to charities. Then it will better the world.

I know more people who have come out of BM injured, physically and mentally. They don't have a peaceful happy feeling when they are home. They feel let down by the real world and have become depressed by the most usually substance induced ethereal perception they held for the week. The art gets destroyed and nothing makes it into the outside world to make a statement of any kind.

If you want to change the world, hold BM on capitol hill and see what happens. Woodstock revisisted, BM, all these events were not out of changing the world or making a political statement, they are out of the desire to escape....which is well and good until people lose themselves, their control and their minds because the escape was too much for them. And this happens far more than the world is changed by a pilgramage of people to Black Rock City.

That is, unless, you call the art of BM that changed the social world the "Girls Gone Wild" video that some guy made out of his video footage of BM last year, but since that is caught up in litigation the only statement it is making about BM is how commercial it has truly become.

I commend you Mike for choosing the road less travelled here. I hope all your studies are fruitful, and that the rest of you enjoy your time at BM, knowing you will be changed, but nothing else in the world when you return will be.

Okay, but if Burning Man inspires someone to go out and change the world, or improve their neighborhood, or improve their own outlook, than you would have to say that Burning Man does change the world, albeit indirectly. "Change our thought and the world around us changes" can't remember who said that originally but i know that i sometimes find inspiration that 'changes my thought' in strange random places and yes, the world around me or at the very least my sense of the world around me does change!

quote:

i'm really sorry to hear that i remember having that feeling of being let down by the real world after returning from a 4-day vacation at the casino of all places (ex-boyfriend used to like to stay in the hotel there and "live it up" hmph). when we left it was back to the grind, only now i had a lot less money cause it went into the evil money-making machine and there was no longer any glitz and stuff. such a let-down, i should have given that money to charity! and Burning Man or no, sooner or later drugs always end up making you feel let down and depressed

quote:

Good idea! But probably what would happen is we'd all go to jail for burnin stuff!

quote:

yeah, that video sucks but it's not surprising that that particular company would thumb its nose at being turned down by BM to film there. shit happens. i have a friend who lives in San Francisco who is an artist and has attended many previous Burning years...he has said that it has indeed gotten more commercialized but he thinks that is only natural for an event that has grown so huge and he insists that it is still an awesome experience for most people. i think a lot of what you get out of it has to do with what your intentions are, and what you personally are "bringing" to the event. i am going to look past some of the negativity surrounding the event and instead use it as yet another tool for personal growth!
And i could be wrong here (Mike?..) but i think Mike's choice has more to do with scheduling....i know that if my graduate classes started at the end of August instead of the middle of September i certainly wouldn't jeopardize a whole semester to go to Burning Man or any other event i can think of!
i would, however, quit my dissatisfying job...

ok, ok, people. listen up.

I did NOT say that burning man bettered the world. I stated

"what are you doing to better the world by going to burning man my friend? "

this implies that you may better the world by going to burning man, not burning man itself betterd the world. maybe I just had bad grammar or something. I tend to do that alot. I just wanted to clear that up.

and about coming back depressed, I felt better towards the world when I returned. I was happy, peaceful and more aware of the simple pleasures in life. if anything I enjoyed the world that much more. only thing similar to depression I had was being tired from lack of sleep. I could imagine the people who stuff their body full of hallucinogens and such would feel depressed, but wouldn't you feel depressed if you had a weeklong binge at your hometown?

but maybe its different for me then most. dunno.

Absinthe is a liquor that contains an extract of wormwood. It can be a number of colors from red to greeen. It has a bitter, licorice-like taste.

Wormwood extract, which contains a chemical called "thujone" which is thought to be chemically related to THC, but it does not interact with the same receptors in the brain(1). Instead, thujone seems to block receptors for a neurotransmitter called GABA.(2) It is not known how this blockade leads to the perceived effects of thujone. It is interesting to note that GHB activates the same receptors that thujone blocks, so thujone alone might be predicted to have the opposite effects.(3)

Thujones are certainly neurotoxic in large amounts and do accumulate in the body over time with repeated use. That said, the doses used in animal toxicity studies were much higher than an occasional absynthe drinker might expect. (4) It is likely that Vincent van Gogh, who is thought to have suffered from absinthe toxicity, was a severe addict who consumed massive quantities of the liquor.(5) Given that countless people have enjoyed absinthe in moderation (certainly less than one drink a day) with no apparent ill-effects and that ancient healers used thujone medicinally(6), it is probably reasonable to assume that light use is relatively safe, barring unforseen sensitivities in the drinker such as allergies.

An important thing to know about absinthe is that thujone is metabolized in the liver (7), so if you are taking any medications that are metabolized in your liver (ask your doctor), you should not drink absynthe.

Finally, alcohol is a diuretic, so be careful about drinking absinthe on the Playa.

Absinthe typically has a very high alcoholic content (often 75% or higher). You should NEVER drink it straight. Not only would this be nasty, but it could make you very sick.

Instead, I normally fill a drinking glass with ice. I then measure out a shot glass full of absinthe and pour it into the drinking glass. Then, I fill the rest of the drinking glass with water. This "absinthe cocktail" has a mild licorice flavor. One such cocktail is plenty to experience the effects. Any more might be dangerous or unpleasant.

A single absinthe cocktail makes me feel a bit of an alcohol buzz, but there is something else to it, too...as if I had just nibbled a teensy bit of a mushroom. It's a relaxed feeling, but not logey like straight alcohol.

My understanding is that absinthe is banned as an "unsafe food" in the U.S. but that there is no penalty for possessing or using it, only for selling it. At least that's what Erowid has to say about it.

Erowid actually has a great review on absynthe, although it's a bit older and doesn't mention the GABA finding.

And yes, I have way too much time on my hands right now.

Hey, buddy, I was asked the question. But you have it quite right, although I think the psychoactive ingredients in the other herbs used is absolutely essential to getting a synergistic effect with the thanajol.
And Van Gogh also ate his yellow paint for the cadmium, he stabbed Degas (his best friend), and he committed suicide. Don't blame it on the absinthe--he was a deeply troubled man.
I give a little talk on the history and politics of absinthe, teach people to make their own, and then I serve it out.
Absinthe makes you feel envigorated, couragous, optimistic, and gregarious. It makes me feel creative, content, and amused by the events around me.
I think Pele should have some.

And Nomad is quite right when he says that beginners are welcome in the inner circle. It is a great experience to spin at such a great event before such a great crowd, but it doesn't mean you are a great spinner. It means you can spin safely in a group context. Going to meeetings is more important that skill. A beginner who spins safely will be allowed in. A beginner who can't or won't spin safely won't be allowed in.
That happened last night to my friend Juliette in Los Angeles. She went out and dropped her baton four times. She was trying to do a difficult signiture move over and over and wouldn't give up.
