I was thinking today.... You have someone that goes out clubbing... therefore and clubber. Or a person that ski's.... a skier.

So what is it for someone who has a skill in Poi or Staff?

Thinking now as I write this it might be a spinner??

It just depends on who you are talking with and how detailed you want to get. Spinners, twirlers, poiers, staffers. They all work.

If you spin with fire then a Fire Artist works too.

Depends where you are in the world i think. In Britain we mostly refer to ourselves as spinners (and fire spinners if you're so inclined).

Poi spinner, staff spinner etc.

Aussies tend to call themselves twirlers - no matter how gay that makes them sound. Odd in such a macho country wink

Lots of people, the world over, refer to themselves as fire dancers.

Object manipulator tends to come from the contact field more than any where else.

People who gain employment from poi and staff often say that they are fire artists/artistes. maybe so they don't just sound like everyone else. It allows a feeling mystery perhaps...

Then there are people that are called by the objects they choose to spin.

"oh him? he's a glowstringer"

"She's a devil sticker"

I noticed a lot of people in various countries simply adding an er to there toys. So Poier and staffer.

etc

Some that does diabolo is a diaboloist.

Not sure what you call someone who does meteors though. Meteoricist?

Meh

what's the collective name for poi & staff? toys! ubbrollsmile

i call my glo-poi my babies. gave up using that name for my firepoi after the strange looks i'd get when "going outside to burn my babies" biggrin

i refuse to be called a poier though. "pooier" (pronounced the same as poier) means pimp or panderer in dutch ubblol spinner will do i reckon.... cool

My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely smile

for fire peeps - well, I say fire spinners, fire performers, or even fire peeps. many people also think I am refering to them when I say burners as well, but I am actually refering to people who are part of the burningman community when I say that. even though there is an overlap of the two groups, I try to keep that one strait! if it is fire somethingorother - then it has to do with poi staff meteors or whatever. If I say burn- or burning- then that should refer to burningman type stuff!

all is clear? good, because I expect everyone to adopt that convention now! wink

thank you and goodnight... er, good morning, er, whatever ubbloco

Well for me it depends what art I am talking... I generally only talk about Poi and Staff though.
If I am talking about someone who does Poi I call them a Poi Spinner.
If I am talking about Staff I say Twirler.
I have no idea why I say what I do... but oh well.

Cantus you said "Aussies tend to call themselves twirlers - no matter how gay that makes them sound. Odd in such a macho country"
Why does that make us sound gay? and why are we a macho country?

I have heard fwirlers(fire twirlers) but i think its pretty much up to each person as to what they call themselves. Fire twirlers, fire spinners, fire dancers, fire performers, burners...a rose by any other name still burns as sweet....

I was recently referred to as a "Poi Nuteer", which I thought was a particularly good one!
