So, I'm going to be making a new set of poi at some point in the next couple of months, and was thinking of wick designs. I'm aiming for a good long burn time, but without having too large a flammable area. Currently I'm using 2.5 ft of kevlar, which gives me a burn time of around 5 - 7 minutes; good length of time, but the flames are quite large and I'm going to be making short poi.

I was thinking of making wicks with a short piece of towelling inside the kevlar to act as a fuel reservoir, without increasing the surface area of the wicks too dramatically.

Has anyone tried this recently? I think the towel shouldn't take too much damage, since it isn't directly exposed to the flames (except at the very bottom), so shouldn't need replacing too often, but if anyone has first hand experience, I would be grateful for any comments or advice on the design.

Tedward at bearclawmfg.com makes something like what your discribing. There little cubes with all kevlar on the outside and a hybrid cotton kevlar (I think) fluff on the inside. I think the small ones are what your after. Check them out wink

I know Tedward personally and his gear is pretty darned good from what I've seen, haven't used it personally though. He has these AWESOME swords that he uses too, with kevlar wickin on them of course... they are magnetized and link together to form a sword-staff thingy. Brilliant.

from what i've heard this works ok with small wicks or ropes

BUT

When a friend used some cotton cored kevlar rope to make a monkeyfist, the cotton got extremely hot and melted (?unsure about the melting - this is hearsay) and gave the user some nasty burns when they brushed themselves with it.

I did that with my first set of wicks, except I used small squares of denim edged with white glue, which I stuck in the pocket thing you get at the end of cathedral fold wicks (I figured that would protect the denim a bit better).

In my case I was trying to stretch a shortish amount of wick, but I ended up getting great burn times.

It did in fact do everything you are looking for, and when I deconstructed those year and a half old wicks last week (kevlar was getting chewed) I found that for the most part the denim was practically unaffected, some of it was still even blue! eek

nice..perhaps denim works better for the hybrid wicks then. Tedward may have changed the design but for bearclaw hybrid wicks I had wonderful burn times until the cotton inside burned out, all within 2 weeks(this was on a staff bought from there). Problem is that the cotton(looks similiar to cotton padding) burns at a much lower temp than the kevlar, and because the burn times are so high you're talking about that cotton being exposed for 3-4 times longer than it can hold up at that temperature. This is a paraphrase of what he said, so I can only assume he's changed the design.

Still getting used to them, but here are my new babies. I get ~15 min of burn time, using parrafin or kero. It's about 6 ft of wick on each, with a fairly small cathedral fold so they're 7" tall. Adam Rice made them for me.

Edit: guess I can't link to images on tribe eh.

Those are huge...how many feet of wicking did you use? per wick or total, if you know either...

Well mine are bigger than those so there tongue ubblol

I think OW is looking for small wicks that will burn forever.

OW, If you make normal samall wicks and melt wax into the kevlar and use white gass to kick them off, they may burn forever.... and fling hot wax everywhere umm wait, lets think this through first.

Suggestions?? smile

shutup cody...you and your damn cannonballs..always gotta bring that up...

why dont you make small monkyfists w/a denim core...and a short leader coming off...you grommit your cable/chain to the leader...and there you go...

and your burn time depends on your fuel mix every bit as much as it does on wick shape/design/amount of wick etc

Ow - I was going to do the exact same thing - kevlar wicks with a towelling fuel resevoir inside. BUT With some careful binding, I think you can completely seal in the towel so it wouldn't get touched by the flame at all.

Haven't got round to doing it yet though - and I think the wick is going to be used for a fire frisbee instead smile

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll give the denim a try when I get around to making them. I don't think I'll go with the monkeyfist idea, as they always tend to come out with a rather large wick. That, and my last set fell to pieces. ubbcrying I still haven't fully gotten over the trauma....
Other fuels might be an option, but only paraffin (kerosene) is readily and, more importantly, cheaply available round these parts. And I'm poor.

Durbs - I'll have to pick your brains (not literally - yuck) the next time I see you. And fire frisbee?? That just sounds like an excuse to get some nasty burns on your fingers. Can't wait to see it in action biggrin

Just made my wicks. Arse. They're bigger than my usual ones. Went with the bearclaw style, denim inside a cuboid of kevlar design, slightly over-estimated the amount of kevlar I would need and didn't really think about what I was actually doing until after I had finished them.

Oh well. Just have to see how well they hold together and how long they burn for now. wink

Random design info - each cuboid is made of 1 foot of looped kevlar, minus a couple of inches for the top and base. Sewn together with kevlar thread and fixed with white glue. Stuffed with 1/8th square metre (more than it sounds) of denim. Linked to chain (haven't decided how long to make these yet) via an eyebolt and large washer through the top panel - no exposed metal, but not entirely sure how well the stitching is going to hold up to the forces involved in spinning.
