i once saw (part of - couldn't watch the whole thing!) a programme on dutch tv that showed a porn star having cosmetic surgery carried out on her vagina. she wanted it to look prettier on camera. apparently it's all the rage among porn stars..... (the op i mean, not broadcasting it on tv eek )

i can't understand anyone wanting to watch surgery on tv. unless of course you're in med school or something, then it's educational. otherwise it's just sensationlism...

I saw part of that on tv last night.

Vanessa Feltz (oh dear) trying to do a live broadcast with someone idiot American who kept telling her she 'was the greatest' while they hopped over the pond to the surgery table and some woman who 'wanted to look 16 again' around her vagina.

There was also a guy who got implants in his butt because he didn't think it was pert enough.

Wow. Could these people really not find anything better to spend their money on?

And does Channel Five think so little of its viewers that they have commissioned an entire series of this crap?!

Ive watched every episode so far, i think its really interesting, but MY GOD! some of the ops are waayyy too scary , personally i dont think id have anything done, but i find some of the stuff fascinating, its so intricate and precise, shows us just how much technology has moved on.
Mind you, instead of showing people with no REAL need for it, it would be nice to see some ethical ops, you know, reconstruction surgery etc? what do u think?

Hmmm. true.

I can understand soap operas more though. It's fictional storytelling and escapism, and back in the old days ( biggrin ) used to have somekind of moral.

Reality tv, especially of the variety that glamourises a woman getting her saggy vagina tightened up, disturbs me. Then, I don't believe anyone should waste their money on cosmetic surgery.

Haha good idea on b3ta, phone up the producers and tell them you're willing to have tail, horns and fur implanted - see how long it takes them to get the cameras to your house.

there's a guy in the states who's had cosmetic surgery to look like a tiger. calls himself tigerman

he's spent over $100,000 on surgery. he has had his lip cleft, the bone removed from his nose (the one they take out from boxers) crowns fitted to give him extra long incisors, silicon implants in his cheek & forehead, not too mention the stripey tattoos all over his face.

i saw him interviewed once and he was scary as hell. at the time he was talking about having a mechical tail fitted ubbloco

Mechanical tail? Poor bloke.... ubblol

Coming back to series like Extreme Makeover: we watched it several times in our house... and that's the point: noone really likes it or understands why people are doing it though everybody seems to watch it.
There was a huge scandal in Germany in the 80s: they aired a movie where they chased a person (I guess it was supposed to be a prisoner) and (pretended to) shoot him - Germany's first attempt of a reality show; well at least they made it look like one. They had to stop it after 15 minutes because hundreds of people and human right groups called the station... I can't find a link for it at the mo....

I remember they were showing a case of bariatric (gastric bypass) surgery on TV and I walked in the house to find my roommate (also a medical student) sitting there calmly eating a hamburger and watching it. So I grabbed a few of his fries and plopped down next to him to watch it, too. Neither of us had ever actually seen a bariatric case and we both found it very interesting.

But at some point, it did occur to me that the idea of calmly eating while watching this program would be considered rather..."unique" by the vast majority of people.

Yeah I know what you mean: during my apprenticeship we used to talk about the disections we performed earlier on while having lunch. It must be kinda weird for others but for us it was just "talking about work".

did i miss something... what's rhinoplasty?

The other thing about cosmetic surgery, that I'm not overly keen on, is the idea of having foreign things implanted and floating around your body... there was another programme on that i was watching, i can't remember what it was called, but it was about a sort of underground silicone injection culture - none of which was sanitary and all the silicone was literally "set loose" around your body, there was a story about a woman who had too much done and was poisoned by it.........

Rhinoplasty is a nose job. There have been a couple of transvestites in the States that have died from silicone poisoning. They have these underground "pump parties" and the sacs that they used later ruptured and spread silicone throughout their bodies. I saw a report on that on 20/20 (a popular American news show) and it was horrible.
