it seems that they're unavoidable! the space left when I stopped a drug addiction has been filled by an addiction to fire twirling. its all i can see when i close my eyelids at night, the yellow/white patterns moving around. when i stare at an ant's nest and see the masses of eccentrically moving ants, the pattern reminds me of some huge complex 128-flamed poi move or something.are there support groups for this? =)

i think that just about all of us here are addicted to the flame in one way or another...myself, im adicted to all aspects of fire twirling and manipulation, after a verry good set of poi perhaps i feel rather hollow sometimes, then i start spinning and i feel tops, its a way to escape your owne mind for a lil wile and on the plus side, it is a healthy passtime, makes you fitter and coordenates you better....unfortunatly, once addicted to fire i dont know of any way to escape it smile------------------ladies and gentelmen take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice...

I know its weird isn't it. The moment you pick them up for the first time. You can't put them down and then when you do you just keep on going back. its the same with juggling. Its a great way to procrastinate whilst studying for exams. he hepeace outgarbo tongue

I live for fire it has taken over my life. I gave up smoking and needed something to occupy my mind and hands and poi fitted the bill perfectly. Addicted? YES. Sorry bout it? ABBSOLUTELY NOT! Although the down side is I never have a working light bulb in my lounge cos i'm always poi-ing it to death. There is something mesmerising about spinning fire that tunes into my subconcious that i cannot explain. I have dreams of spinning fire and flowing with it as though me and the poi are one and the fire communicates with me. (do I need therapy? he-he).

Are we nearly there yet?

do we need therapy for this addiction? I think not. Better this than many other addictions, and really isn't it therapy in itself. Possibly the best kind! (well ok there are some better wink hehe!)

actually, Jeff, that isn't really an option anymore really. I guess I over did it for about 3 years in total and now I have irritable bowel syndrome. Which basically means no white drugs for me. Ingestion of such leaves me in super-painful waves of cramps that renders me helpless and curled up in bed, sweating and shaking(with pain). I haven't touched what I was so fond of for about 8 months now. Even panadol mostly disagrees with me. And that doesn't include a huge long list of other foods (mainly dairy.)Of course a little greenery before a twirl can be lots of fun though =)But there's a lesson boys and girls - drugs aren't as 'harmless' as they seem eh?

Splat, that's aweful and I am sorry for you but how strong you must be to overcome it!!! *round of applause for splat*As for addictions...what about when you walk through your day going.."damn I could set that on fire and swing it!"Or "With a few bolts and some wicking..maybe a chain here or there I bet that would make a heluva toy." My issue is I see fire toys possibilities in so much I get overwhlemed wanting to do it all.Bowls...they are fun to dance with fire in them. My umbrella is useless in the rain but getting to the impressive state with fire.....Or, when I go to the store and walk through the pet aisle going.."Oh that chain would *never* do...the links aren't sturdy enough to spin around see?" And I spin the stupid thing in the store aisle with some poor old woman nearing heartattack as she surely envisions a dog on the other end!!!!It's late and I need help!*g*------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...

Ever since I made my poi 2 weeks ago, I haven't been away from them for more than 10 minutes. I don't even consider leaving them at home in case someone has flamable liquid. When I first started poi, I would roll out of bed in the morning and start spinning. I would make my breakfast thinking of how to make the btb bf work. Dreams of poi...

Yes, I am addicted to staff, poi, and everything else that's fire. But I've been surprised how much of a release they all have been for me. Yesterday, I was stressed out. Really stressed out. I had a major test the next day, had to start preparing for another test on tuesday, had to write a research paper, had to do research for another research paper, AND had to talk someone out of commiting suicide (as well as keep in the back of my mind that a different person who I'd talked out of it before, was acting up also with the whole suicidal thing). I was just about as stressed as I could be. And what was the first thing that came to mind on what I could do?~I wanted to light up. I wanted nothing more than to go out with my staff or poi, light up, and twirl. I never got to, but just thinking about it, remembering the feeling I get every time I light up, made me fine. I think I did ok on the test, and I'm no longer stressed about the rest of the weekend. All thanks the flame. ------------------"Burning--the process of breaking things down into a simpler form." -Hitokage---FireStorm---(jimidawg@snet.net)[This message has been edited by Hitokage (edited 21 October 2001).]

i am going through fire withdrawls at the momment. frown i just moved to hawaii but i was silly and forgot all of my fire toys and fans. i have no idea what i was thinking before i left, i guess i was in a fire detox fasting mood right before departure and figured i'll just make some here. i kind of forgot to bring the random tools neccary to build them though. argh! i miss dancing with my fans so much , i have my radioactive jellyfish poi but it just doesn't do it for me quite the same as my fans. its funny to dance without them now, i guess that you don't notice how much fire is a life style habit until you don't have access to your toys. painful withdrawls is the best way to describe it.

I think there is a certain amount of people with addictive 'personalities' (me for one)...if you stop doing one thing you move onto another ...and take it to extremes. Being addicted to anything isnt good though, even if it is fire poi. Some things can take over and it interfere with your life.I just want to say Good on u for kicking the drug thing and thank god for poi for keeping you away from it...if it makes you feel good and it aint harming your everday life then go for it!!!

When I'd only been twriling for a couple months (still a beginner, but definitely hooked) I flew to a family reunion and *gasp* forgot my practice poi. So there I was in semi-rural Missouri looking for anything to twirl..There were these trees (I don't know what kind) with long bean-like things. So I snapped a couple of those in half and tied them to some strings. They actually worked for awhile until I hit myself and they fell out. Man they hurt, too! -I hadn't twirled glowsticks much at this point. Fortunatly there was a Wal-Mart near by so I got a real set soon after grinKristen smile

I've heard that the Betty Ford Center -- founded in 1982 by former First Lady Betty Ford and Ambassador Leonard Firestone -- is a not-for-profit, licensed treatment center that helps women, men and families begin the process of recovery from addiction. You could also meet and marry some famous movie star whilst you're there ... but it'd be tough to find a drink. winknexus_sun
