I know very little about Exeter, other than it's now part of the CUC (Combined Universities of Cornwall) same as Falmouth. My ex-ex-ex-gf goes there too, and she seems to like it, but she doesn't spin (knew there was something amiss there wink) so not sure about the rules. Still, there are occasionally some good gigs in Exeter,so make sure you bring a Mags sized couch when you move down and we'll come rescue you from boredom. smile

Oh, yeah, and congratulations. biggrin

i didnt even know about poi at the time so i dont know what its like for spinning, but there is plenty of open ground where you could do it.
i really enjoyed going to exeter uni. maybe you could make it your mission to bring poi to the students there biggrin

Congratulations my now fellow student!

Being a student is great fun!, i myself, have chosen to fail my first year, just so that i can be a student for 5 years, instead of 4 biggrin

So what did I learn:
Teabags can be used upto and includig 5 times.
Freshers week in one of the best weeks of the year.
The first year is easy (I just fooked it up...which leds me to my next point)
Dont smoke too much. Smoke by all means. Just not too much. This is what I did wrong.
Living in halls is great.
Lots of shops near universities do student discounts...always ask them.
Universities are really badly organised.
Email is(at the Uni of Kent anyway) the only way for people to contact you. THis is really stupid and leads to lots of problems.
Find out who your personal tutor is and get to know them well....they are VERY helpful.

Apart from that, good luck, have fun, stay safe. Dont do anything I wouldnt do, but if you do, then take pictures wink

I think my main bit of advice for uni is to go out and meet like-minded people. I didn't get on that well with my corridor mates in halls so I decided to go and join the societies I was interested in. And so I found myself in the bar with a bunch of people I've never met before, and a couple of those people are some of my best mates now.

Taking pictures is a particularly good idea, actually. It is a total student cliche, but pictures are good.

I second what UCOF says on all counts, really.
Universities really are badly organised, in my experience. Above all, figure out quickly how to pass your course. Worry about everything else, like actually understanding the course, afterwards.

You can afford to miss your 9 o'clock lecture. You can afford to miss your 5pm lecture. You can afford to miss everything else in between, if you're good at it. You cannot afford to miss your coursework. You cannot afford to miss out on all the fun everyone is having around you. biggrin

Congrats Caz! I'm in exactly the same boat, i got my exam results and got into my first choice and am also very scared frown

I know some people at exeter and they love it, dont know any spinners there though... i'm sure there'll be a circus skills society there, and if there isnt, you can start one and get to meet all kinds of like-minded people biggrin

congratulations! i'm nervous about what's happening with me and uni (my placement comes out 17th jan)

i was speaking to my friend yesterday about her advice for uni and she said that you should live on res (and listening to UCOF, i'm guessing that's "halls" in the UK) because you have a much better chance of making friends.

but congratulation for makiing it in (and to Beth as well!)

i would have changed ***** to phallus, and claire to petey Petey

Rougie: but that's what I'm doing here
Arnwyn: what letting me adjust myself in your room?..don't you dare quote that on HoP...

I graduated from uni this year and in my time i learnt:

Teabags can be used upto and includig 5 times, but after 2 they don't work quite as well.
Freshers week in one of the worst weeks of the year. 7000 students, venues can't hold more than a couple of thousand. Thus all the existing students buy all the tickets before freshers know they exist. Then they try to sell them to the freshers for silly money, which silly international students buy off them.
The first year is easy, and i got to do it twice because I changed to a better course after the first one without even remotely the Alevel grades required. If you completely flunk alevels then it's worth finding a good department offering a crap course, with the view to change when they see you arn't that bad.
The only poor students I knew at uni smoked too much, bought too many DVDs etc. Help them cut down, but borrowing them off them for extended periods.
Living in halls is great, if you're lucky enough to get good accomodation within a 25 min walk of campus, which is unlikely if you apply through clearing.
Lots of shops near universities do student discounts...always ask them.
Universities are really badly organised.
Most lecturers are completely incompetant
Those that arn't generally can't teach for sh*t
Email is the only way for lecturers to contact you. They generally send really important emails a few hours before the event, and even computer geeks like me don't check them that often. I lost 30% in one of my courses in the final year because I missed a test which was advertised under 24 hours before it happened.
If you have a personal tutor, you're lucky. A lot of university's tutoring scheme is a farce, only existing so they can put it in the prospectus.

Now I'm applying for jobs at universities, and plan to go back for a masters sometime soon smile

Hey congrats all, and welcome to Oli, cant wait to see you as part of circusoc when I return from Graz for my final year.

And in terms of what flid said about lecturers being incompetant and cant teach for sh*t, I can catagorically say the complete opposite for my department cos Bristol Uni rocks!

there's nothing quite as fulfilling as a tasty airwrap

if you're full of sh!t, at least you're fertile

Halls is a good place to start, my best friends through 3 years were people i met in halls in the first two days!! (and my greatest foe....) Also it is where I first encountered poi... oh yeah and you're not living at home with no money, you're away with no money but it makes all the difference when you're stuck inside on a friday night with absolutely cack all to do... uni's great and I've finished!!! frown

reusing tea bags is a wonderful idea but the tea tastes rubbish, my advice is just to get a HUGE cup /bowl /vase and drink it greater quantities biggrin and besides the milk always runs out before the teabags... buy herbal hippy tea!

in that case, stay away from the really huge tins, like the caterers have. sure, you get a whole heap, but it tastes like dirt.

I cant really give all that much more advice, its all been said. if it hadnt, i prolly couldnt anyway, cos uni over there and down here are prolly different.

i will say, however, try to stay away from relationships with people in your course. chances are, you're spending anywhere from three to five years with them, and if it turns nasty in the first 8 months, you're putting up with them for a looong time.

and while no, unis dont really care that much about intoxication, it isnt a good idea to rock up to lectures nissed as a pewt.

I think there might just be something about poi that attracts a particular kind of person -- nice, interesting, occationally kooky people. I haven't been on HOP that long so feel free to shoot me down if I'm wrong biggrin

I don't think the fact that this is a friendly community has anything to do with the internet considering some of the horse's arses I've met on other forums.

i think it may also be a fact that the poi/fire community isnt very large, compared to things like basketball players and stuff, and that often, people dont really like the idea of people spinning fire around.

A relatively small group, that is somewhat more persecuted than the average joe, we need to band together and be strong smile

or maybe not. i dunno.
