At Falmouth, someone mentioned (can't remeber who) that poi spinners either fall into the category of Geek (possably nerd) or Hippy.
So what one do you fall into??

Hmmm...lets see...

Long hair + Birkenstocks + listens to classic rock + plays guitar + sings + interested in Eastern philosophy = Hippy

But then again, I'm not into drugs or casual sex...

or...

Likes D & D, video games, etc. + read Lord of the Rings four times + has 3.75 GPA (but trying for higher) + wants to get a Ph.D. (preferably from Columbia) + tried to use math to figure this out = Geek

Then again, I only want the Ph.D. from Columbia because they've got a fantastic South Asian Religions program...

I guess the scale tips towards the geek side...but damn it I'm a hippy at heart!

Ok, this would be my definitions of the two categories as some people seem to take them a little too literally.

Geek - A person whos main focus is on improving. They can spend hours/day practicing. They focus speciffically on a narrow range of skills but excell in the ones they do. Their motivation is self improvement and personal satisfaction.

Hippy - A person who is in it more for the community. They go to gatherings, festivals, and meetings to share the love of their art with others.

Thats just my take on it and again, those definitions are still a bit too speciffic IMO. Anyway, during my troupe's last meeting, I went around and classified everyone.. All the members could easily fit into one of these two categories EXCEPT for 1. Hes a raver who also spins fire. Hes neither a geek nor a hippy. I would say we need a new category for these types but honestly, I dont really even consider them to be "fire spinners" as they prefer glow sticks, but wont turn down a burn once in a while.

Let's turn those old bridges we crossed into ashes.
We'll blaze a new trail,
and torch the rough patches.

I'd probably fall into the heek/gippie category-def. into peace, love, the earth, whatever, but also a HUGE LOTR geek...
by the way, any other people think its kinda funny to see "hippie" spelled w/ a "Y"?
Just looked them up in the dictionary for fun...

hippie/hippy- "a usually young person who rejects the mores of established society (as by dressing unconventionally or favoring communal living) and advocates a nonviolent ethic; broadly: a long-haired unconventionally dressed young person"
(in that case, I'd pretty much fall into that category!)

geek-"a person often of an intellectual bent who is dissaproved of" OR
"a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off of a live chicken or snake" (I really hope none of you fit into that definition!)

"I know a good deal more than a boiled carrot."
"Fire!" "Where?" "Nowhere, I was just illustrating the misuse of free speech."
