If you hold the poi as if you were doing a one handed weave, you can swing one poi in a weave pattern and leave the other in a stall. If you can get it so the stall is really still it looks good, but you can also get it to do a pendulum thing across the front of your body while the other poi moves in a circle.

It's surprisingly easy to go in and out of from a one handed weave too.

I was trying for a while to do one handed weave, and it seemed doable, but the poi just end up going spazzy after about two rotations. So you're saying it's really possible??

Yes, its all in the hand movement. Do a figure of eight with your knuckles.

You can only do it with an even number of beats (unless anyone says otherwise), but i can consistantly do a 6 beat by wrapping round my wrist.

You can also do leg wraps, etc and on a really good day, wrap one of them and go ito a one handed weave.

chucks, why do you say odd numbered beat weaves are not possible?

i know a young lad that used to be able to do a 3bt gilligan weave.

then he found these things called clubs and he forgot what poi were...

I do a 3 beat weave one-handed.

So either it's possible, or I'm just a figment of my own imagination. confused ubblol

So how do I do that then? Do I need any wraps?

get two different coloured poi and do a one-handed 2 bt weave.

add an extra beat on each side and you have a 3 bt smile

the easiest way to start is by noticing that the poi that is on the thumb and forefinger side of your hand generally is the one leading (changing sides first).

adding the extra beat is simply a matter of using the poi that is attached to the other side of your hand (the bottom bit - probably held onto by your little finger) to lead from one of the sides to the other.

depending on how you turn your hand, you might need to wrap a little but to be honest, the best advice here really i think is 'go and pick up a stick instead for a couple of hours' smile

I don't use any wraps when I do it.

Ok, I'm not too good at descriptions, so for reference I like Coleman description of it.

Whilst I have my my poi on 2 hands, I do something really easy like a 3 beat weave.
I then transfer the poi on my right hand to my little finger, and the one on my left hand across to my right thumb.
Ok, from there...

(I'm assuming from what you've posted that you're already familiar with one handed stuff?
If not, I found the best way to practice keeping the poi at opposite ends of the circle is to do a simple 2 beat corkscrew.
So back to the weave...)

The simplest description is what Coleman says-
Written by:

add an extra beat on each side and you have a 3 bt

As I say, I don't wrap- I just kinda turn my wrist over again and it turns into 3 beat.

Good luck with it. biggrin

I had a play with this last night and it is indeed possible. I still think the 4 beat feels better but its probably because I'm not used to the 3 beat yet.

So moving on, is a one handed butterfly weave possible? This is something i've been trying to figure out for a while. I know it's possible to do something like it over your head, i.e. one butterfly in front of your head --> one butterfuly behind your head -->...

This implies to me that it should be possible to do a one handed butterfly weave. I'm not sure how it should work, I always end up in a big knot. Can anyone help?

Chuck
