Hello, hello and welcome to the thread for all Irish fire dancers, spinners, object manipulators, drummers, musicians and anyone else interested in these arts in Ireland.

This thread was started nearly a couple of years ago now... and it's since grown to include more people, gatherings, events, fun and games than we had thought possible.

And it's still growing - so if you're new to the arts, or want to meet up with any of us, please post at the end of this thread to introduce yourself... or send me a PM with your email address and I'll add your name to our mailing list.

There are spinners, dancers and manipulators all over the country, and you'll find lots of them on here... don't be shy, we're nice biggrin

So welcome, and hope to see you soon hug

Hello all Rathlin peoples.
Just thought I'd post this while all you lovely people are tucked up in your warm beds – I, on the other hand, am sitting in this f**kin office, shattered, feeling bruised and sore and in need of a neck massage.

bah murghffffck*it

Anyways, despite the cold and constant needing to pee, I had a marvellous time on Rathlin and I just wanted to thank you all. From all the wicked firespinning to the pretty countryside, from 4/5 people in a small tent dying from asphyxiation to that funky band on Saturday night... sweet as.

Anyways... memories....

Friday night:
"I've lost my staff. No really, I put it beside the bucket. No, I did. Listen, I put it beside the bucket, ok?!!"

Saturday night:
"Has anyone seen my poi?!!!"
"Emm, they're beside the tent"
30 secs later...
"Has anyone seen my poi?!!!"
"They're still beside the tent"
20 secs later...
"Has anyone seen my poi, I think I've lost my poi?!!!"
"They're still beside the tent"
15 secs later...
"I think I might go and find my poi, can't remember where I put them"
"Ok"

Sunday morning:
"Does anyone want to skin up?"

Other things:
A small smelly room with a view and occasional classical music...
5-year-old Peter spinning poi
Pretty lake
Funky As Hell band on Saturday night
Breathtaking sunset on Sunday
A certain bronzed firestaffer (sorry Aidan, not you this time smile )
Friendly neighbours
(add to at will...)

anyways, hope to see you all again soon...

I'll just go back to work now...

humph.

love clare xoxo

Good morning,

that was some weekend! I just wanted to tell you that I had loads of fun and add something to the memories list:

"Do you have a lighter?"

"I cut my hand yesterday night but I can't remember where!" (Sunday morning)

"Where is the fire gear?"

- "At the tent..." (Sorry, had to be mentioned again ubblol )

"Where is my lighter? Does anyone have a lighter?"

"Mission complete!"

"I can't do it. It's too cold. It's like my whole body is eek..."

"F**k, I've lost my lighter. frown "

other things:

- white van appearing on the horizon all of a sudden

- certain person (still) dancing like a Duracell bunny at 7am (or was it even 8am?)

- pink cliffs

Hey, it sounds like I missed out on a fab weekend. (I think I got the gist of many of the conversations, though... ) It's a shame, but I ended up pretty whacked after my first week of a new job, and moved into my new home on Saturday! I'm starting to make vague plans for exploring this lovely country, and will absolutely definately be down in Dublin sometime, plus as many other weekend trips to accessible towns as I can fit in. I'll post when I know if I'm coming to Cork or Dublin or...

I am glad this is an international game - I learnt in school that the world spins, and now I know it's true.

glad to hear you all had such a good time. i thought the whole weekend was absolutely amazing! haven't quite recovered yet though. stayed in clo's on monday and tuesday nite, she stayed at mine on wednesday, and i stayed out there again last nite, so the partying has only just stopped biggrin (yaawwwwnn......)

clo's '93 citroen broke down in the middle of nowhere on the way home. had to pull in to the side of the road while smoke bellowed from the engine. we walked about 50ft and came to a garage with a sign outside: "citroen specialist". it was like the gods were looking down on us ubbrollsmile

i'm still shattered, trying to put all the pieces back together, trying to put all of the events in order, but due to having 6 hours sleep all weekend it all seems like one long day.... ubbloco

suffering from a severe bout of post party come-down frown you know that feeling of impending doom......

- the pink cliffs at sunset

- paddy's amazing eco-friendly bicycle powered rig.

Very true Sarah... I refuse to talk to any man about home furnishings until I'm at least 40.

Happy hundreth peoples, it's been a lovely thing to know you all (despite the fact I've had to accept I now use internet chatrooms) and, in case you hadn't guessed, I'm utterly sickened that I'm missing the party this weekend. Oh well.

Oh Lisa, I had a thought - what about trying to put together a full female Maori costume - people would ask about it and you could explain poi history!!! I don't think it would be disrespectful?!!

Love and hugs

Hi wave

Finally recovered enough to post. Great weekend, lovely to see ye there. I put some photos up here: https://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/fir...case.yahoo.com/
Tis only a few, and they're not great because (a) i haven't figured out how to use my new camera properly yet, and (b) alcohol related factors. I also emailed you a couple of video clips, starring the lovely Firepoise, and also a bronzed staffer who i assume is the afforementioned (spelling?) one...
Would stick them on HOP but i have no gallery thingy.

I look forward to seeing some of ye over the weekend, and thanks to Lisa for teaching me a new move on Tues evening sunny

And yes, this thread is slow, but then again, so's my computer, so it could be just me. frown

nice pics helen, i'm defo bringing a camera on saturday, may even borrow my friends tripod. it won't be completely dark, will it? it'd be nice to get some shots of everyone's costumes smile

clare, i would love to have had the time to make a decent costume, but unfortunately i don't. last nite was the first nite i slept in my bed since last thursday, haven't been home all week really....

anyhooooo.... picked up some purple, blue, black & silver body/face paint yesterday so all i need now is an artist.

failing that i could just use the blue and go as a woad

(actually the more i look at that pic the more i'm thinking it's a good idea biggrin)

really looking forward to tomorrow nite. the past few weeks have been very good to me, i feel very fortunate - lots of spinny meets with lots of nice people - thank you all grouphug

right then, whenever someone knows the time/place to meet, could you text me please? my phone has been on the blink since it's near death experience on sunday nite, but i can still get texts no problem.

aidan, if you arrive up early and you're wandering around on your tod then give us a shout and i'll come in and meet you. i'll even lend you a skirt biggrin

talk to ya later.....

A woad? wasnt woad the type of color or dye? ie blue woad? Worn by the scottish and irish Picts?

yes, yes, woad is a plant from which they extract a blue dye that was used by celts & picts

but in the new king arthur film there's a scene where they're ambushed by picts and someone yells out "look out - woads!" (or something to that effect) and this big blue person jumps out from the trees. that's where i took if from..... smile

Sorry way off topic and sillyness.

To keep it off topic though. Have you read the mists of avalon? Alternative version written from the point of view of morgana and the sisterhood rather than the arthur himself. very very good. The is two other booksin the series that race the line of arthur and morgana and the other key players right back into roman mythology. Mists is the last and the best and can be read without the others. Hihgly recommended. Marion Zimmer Bradley.

OK back on topic now

offtopic yeh, i have the mists of avalon & also the forest house. can't remember the name of the 3rd one but i haven't read it.

mists was written first but is the last book in the saga. the forest house was written second and is a prequel to mists. the third book was written later and slots between the previous two, as far as i know. the two i've read are very good indeed.

MZB has written a couple of books with Dianne L Paxon, another good writer if you like arthurian legends, dark ages type of stuff. she's also written a few books on Fionn MacCumhal, Diarmuid & Gráinne, Oisín & Deirdre etc..... another fine writer.

back on topic..... did you get your tux?? biggrin

Good morning boys and girls, hope you’re all having a lovely day.

Sorry the experiments aren’t going so well Sarah… fiddle with a few knobs and add a bit of water and it’ll be grand (this is my professional scientific advice, lol)

Lisa, that woad looks great – nice planes too smile

Aidan, very sorry I’m going to miss the new Irish Bond, lol, make sure you take loads of pics ubblol

Anyways, just wondering if you Arthur-types have read Le Morte Darthur by Sir Thomas Malory. He was a knight in 1441… admittedly, the book is written in ye olde English, but after a couple of chapters you get used to it.

But I believe it’s where most of the Arthurian legend was sourced from (of course, Malory was inspired by the French prose Suite du Merlin, the Tristan and the Lancelot and the English poems Morte Arthure and Morte Arthur – but I think his work drew all these stories together). Also, check out Sir Gawain and the Green Knight ‘a masterpiece of medieval alliterative poetry’. Again, it can be a pain in the arse to get through, but it’s a great story.

Ok, have a lovely day, take care

Hi,

Right, formalities first:

Fuel WILL be provided, so don't bother yourselves carrying it. Showtime is between 8 and 10 (approx). i'll be at the venue (which is here: https://www.excisebar.ie/locall.html
) from around 7, and if anyone wants to change/paint themselves blue/whatever there rather than walking around Dublin like that, that's no problem. Could arrange to be around earlier if anyone's lost/alone/bored

Speaking of painting yourselves blue, i was planning on it myself, seeing as my costume is loosely based on this: https://www.moviecitynews.com/arrays/images/2003/king_arthur/gwen_warrior_5.jpg
only with a chainmail skirt instead, and more tit coverage. redface

And yes Ado, you can wear a skirt. In fact i positively encourage it.

offtopic And yes, i also know people who played "woads" in the new King Arthur film. Not sure of the historical accuracy of the name, as any Arthuran legend that i've read has been by Chretien de Troie, and in Old French, so i kind of missed out on some of the distinctions by getting really confused and not understanding half of it.

Ummm, know i must have forgotten stuff, so let me know if ye have any other questions.

See you tomorrow (with blue on!)
