Posted:I see it all clearly now. Ridalin, aka Kiddy Crack is part of a government conspriracy! Don't belive me? I'll explain.
More and more kids in Australia are being diagnosed with ADD or ADHD and being perscribed Ridalin. This drug replaces good old fashioned disapline. Anyway the long term results of this result in a genration of Ridalin dependant adults. Meat for the government's grinder to take over the world or some other EVIL plan.
That's what I think anyway.

Bill Hicks is good.
Generally prescription tranqs, anti depressants etc etc are bad.
Generally anti establishment anti government comedians/forefinders of modern thought are good.

The answer is never the answer. What's really interesting is the mystery. If you seek the mystery instead of the answer, you'll always be seeking. I've never seen anybody really find the answer-- they think they have, so they stop thinking. But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery, plant a garden in which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom. The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer.-- Ken Kesey

Posted:Ye, so organized Kaos equals ADD
and this is what I have to say about...did you see the hockey game last night!!!???...oh sorry, what was I saying again??? Oh ye

thew doctor I went to prescribed a different type of ADD drug to Ritalin. I got something called Dexadrin aka DextroAmphetamine thats rite focus on the Amphetamine. from the same family as speed, LSD and all of that...
what I found is that its the most inconsistant drug in the world, and when you take to much or you mix it with alcohol...HOLY SHIT YOU GET FUKKED!!!!!!!
here's my discoveries:
1) your correct dosage for the day changes depending on the amount of sleep you got your diet etc. if your dosage is too high for that day, even if you take the nomal amount, you'll go nuts (fast heartbeat sweating, shaking)
2)when the effect wears off, you get incredibly tired, a headache, dizzyness, (like a hangover)
3) the guy who prescribed it, was more a sales man then a doctor. I went in there and he talked to me in a way more then to se if I needed the drug but in a way, thati was already preprescribed before I walked in. Its like he had a whole sales pitch going down for the drug.

I really hate taking this shit. and really it;ll only help you do better in skool if you actually try and do well (which I cant say for myself) one thing i discovered is that its all in your head. like I sat down to write a test and I hadnt taken any, so I was worried I'd fail. then I tried to convince myself I was under the influence of them, and I got 93 in the end. so ADD is just something people can use to blame for their poor parenting or their childrens lack of self control.

I still take Dexadrin to keep my mother happy...but thats about it...that Shite is evil

Posted:I can't say anything about Ridalin etc... as I've never had ADD, however some twat doctor talked me into being on Anti-depressants for 3 months when I was having a bad time about 5 years back.
He prescibed me 6 months worth without even thinking "hey this kid might just need someone to talk his shit through with."
Back in the day I was still a nipper, my fucking hormones were going through hell and I was tied into being engaged, a mortgage and all sorts of other shit that I couldn't cope with.
Why the fuck did this twat give me drugs to sort my life out with, they were one of the reasons my life was getting worse anyway.
These muppets don't know their ass from their elbow and couldn't find their dick with a map.
They don't understand what they're doing and 95% of the shit they give you isn't fully tested with the long-term head fuck it causes anyway.
I threw them out because I decided that it wasn't fixing my problems, it was just stopping me from thinking about them and that was good enough for him.

Posted:As a HS teacher I've got so much to say about ADD and medicating kids that I couldn't possibly fit it into a single post.

I can say that for the 5% of kids that are prescribed certain medication that actually need it, it is a great thing. For the 95% that don't, it's purely an excuse. I hate the fact that those 5%ers that bust their asses despite learning disabilities have to put up with the abuses of the 95% who abuse the system.

I hate to whine when I don't have a solution for the problem but I do know that I find the number of inept parents truely bothersome.

Posted:Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation about ADHD and the meds used to treat it.

First, I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was about 8. This was long before it was fashionable. I went on Ritalin.

Before I was on Ritalin, I was "unteachable," I was "lazy," "slow," "unmotivated," and "so bright, but doesn't care."

My parents tried everything, but the thing about ADHD is that kids with it are resistant to discipline. In fact, punishing them often makes it worse because they have so little control over their own actions that they figure that whatever they will do will result in failure, so why bother? On top of which, I had no friends (impulse control is key to social relationships).

But then I went on Ritalin. The change was drastic. The school called my parents less than once a month about my behavior, I had friends, and I was so much happier. But the real results took another eight years.

When I turned 16, I suddenly realized that I could use SELF-DISCIPLINE. See, all those years, I had thought of myself as having no self-discipline because of how I was before the meds. But when I actually decided to see if I could pull it off, I got all A's.

To make a long story short, I graduated at the top of my class in HS, went to Stanford, got two degrees in molecular biology and now I'm a medical student. But my resume isn't as important as is the fact that I am HAPPY now. Yes, I am HAPPY. I have this brain and the meds actually give me the power to control it. I wouldn't be happy doing anything else, but without the meds there would be no way for me to do this.

Look at where I am now. At age 24, my entire life spreads before me as an vast, unexplored sea of endless possibilities -- possibilties that would be closed to me had I not been able to make it through my education because I lacked the ability to control my own mind.

Meds for ADHD aren't a cure, though, and not many parents realize that. It takes a lot of interventions to manage ADHD well and the meds are only part of it. What it does is that it allows you to take control, but it won't take control for you.

The reason that I am going into medicine is because I want to do research and teaching on this very topic. I'm specifically interested in what role alternative/complimentary therapies may have in the management of ADHD.

First, Ritalin is most closely related to cocaine, not amphetamine, LSD, or anything else. HOWEVER, Ritalin and cocaine are very different in a few ways. First, cocaine itself is only a mild stimulant when taken by mouth. It's when you snort it that it's so darned addictive. Second, even when snorted, Ritalin, for some reason, is not nearly as pleasant as cocaine. It may be because cocaine has some pharmacologic properties that Ritalin does not.

Second, the rampant careless diagnosis of ADHD is not the fault of ADHD or Ritalin, but rather it is the consequence of the way that we do medicine. In a health care system where physicians are given 15 minutes with each patient and are penalized for referring patients to specialists, you have people who don't know ADHD from their own assholes diagnosing it. ADHD needs to be diagnosed by someone who specializes in it. The diagnosis requires about three hours of testing and also an examination of teachers' comments in grade school and a bunch of other things.

When a kid is hauled into the doctor's office for a behavior problem, there's almost always a real problem and it's not necessarily discipline. Discipline problems have a very characteristic appearance to them. But it's not always ADHD. It might be depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, ODD, or even schizophrenia. But because of the way that we do medicine, the diagnosis is all too often ADHD without a more careful evaluation. ADHD is still technically underdiagnosed in there are fewer kids diagnosed with it than actually have it. However it is MIS-diagnosed in that there are kids out there who don't have it and yet have a diagnosis.

Third, amphetamine is used to treat ADHD sometimes. Most people actually find it milder than Ritalin. "Speed" is methamphetamine, which is not used to treat ADHD, and amphetamines (Dexedrine and Adderall) are not addictive when taken by mouth as directed. It's amphetamine ABUSE, not use, that causes problems. That means taking large doses of it, snorting it, and taking it when you aren't supposed to be.

Fourth, there is evidence that being on the meds makes you LESS likely to use recreational drugs, LESS likely to get involved with the law, LESS likely to fail out of school, and LESS likely to start smoking.

But to say that ADHD is caused by poor parenting is saying that my parents were poor parents. There was a lot about their parenting that I didn't like, but I have to say that I think they did a pretty good job overall.

And is ADHD an excuse for laziness? Sorry, but I've come much too far and accomplished way too much to be "lazy."

What we need is better diagnosis and better education for parents and teachers about how to properly manage ADHD. Meds are part of the answer, but they are not the whole answer.

One other thing: ADHD is a gift that I was given. However, it is a tough gift to have. With proper management, I have control of it and it can do wonderful things (creativity, spontaniety, strength, energy). But if it could be "cured" tomorrow, you couldn't ever convince me to take the cure. It is part of who and what I am and I'm not ready to give it up.

Posted:Well said Mike,
I must say that the diagnosis depends greatly on rational, educated parents as well as rational educated professionals.

I'm fortunate to be at a school with a fantastic special education program. There certainly is a wide range of learning disabilites which are being effectively treated and supported.

I do find that most parents either underreact or overreact to finding that there kid has ADD or ADHD. I've had parents speaking of there kid as if he was dieing as well as parents who pulled there kids out from being tested because they didn't want to face the truth of their child having this disorder.

In my opinion, this is an important but not overwhelming aspect of a child's learning patterns. In the cookie cutter, one size fits all, philosophy of western education there really is no room for those who must learn more actively.

I think that simply blaming the disorder or the medications associated with controlling it is shortsighted.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

The point (and I'm not mad at anyone) is that it hurts people like me when people start to call it a crock and start to say that people who are on ADHD meds are drug addicts. It makes the government pass more and more restrictive laws about what meds I can get and how much. And what's more, it scares parents of kids with ADHD away from the diagnosis and the treatments. And the people who lose in the end are the kids.
