Hi Nightshade,

I haven't actually made a fire set myself, I have only bought one, however a good starting point would be in the articles page. There is an article on making fire heads and some other basic stuff. Also seek out the threads on ball v. chain.

Whatever you do, make sure it is of strong construction so you don't get flying flamage. Oh, & this thread might get moved to technical discussion or help... Or might not

It was a day for screaming at inanimate objects.

What this calls for is a special mix of psychology and extreme violence...

Hey shade,
I used Kevlar, not sure what that is called in English, I think it's just the same. Anyway they make bulletproof vest from the stuff. It's strong material and you can just buy it cheaply in any hardware store. It burns for months. Any wrap that around some small metal rod 2-3 inchs. Cover that in wire to stop it falling aprt and attach a chain. Hope it helps. Good swinging.

It dos'nt really cost much either. 15 euros per meter or something. Did'nt know it was so hard to come across. Must take advantage of possible bussiness endevours.

Hey, speaking of wicking, which style do people prefer? Cathedral or the other tube type? (I'm speaking of the ones offered here on this lovely site). What are the pros and cons of them?

Shoot, this is a technical question, oops! it wasn't my fault! I was merely following the flow of conversation.

Another side note here, I used to go down to New Port Richey every winter when I was really little I think. Is that anywhere near Busch Gardens, Sea World, and that disney place? New Port Richey sounds way too familur, I swear I used to have family down there.

Hiya.. found excellent stuff to make light weight fire poi out of.. fishing wire (trace they call it)
Thankx to Tricky for showing me his.. I've made some very nice sexy practise tennis balls.. just need to get stronger stuff (over 75lb breaking strenght). Basics of the connectors are fishing swivels and crimps.. Fisher man-blokie thought I was either mad or trying to catch a whale!
Ps you can get Kevlar in Malcs shop..

Cool, trace eh? that would definitly look cool, what with the trace being fairly not visible so it would appear as the fire is moving on it's own.

What prevents the trace from melting? I mean, I'd think fire would melt it or cause it to snap or stretch. Maybe I'm just thinking of normal fishing line, is this stuff you're talking about metal?

Hi Jello..

Yes mate its wire.. my thin stuff has a nylon coating so these ones will be going NO-WHERE near a flame.. but Tricky has some cool ones with really thick trace thinks it's about 4/5ml thick.. (I'm trying to get him to swop with my beasts of fire poi.. I'm only little and BIG arm muscles don't look that good on me..It's looking good at the mo )

Anyway..I'm still experimenting with couplings and connectors..

I bought some big ball chain from BnQ the other day.. could I find anything to connect it to split rings (again go to a fishing shop to get heavy duty ones) NO.. all I need is a bigger version of the 'thingie' that attaches you bath plug to the bath.. even went to specialist plumbing shop to have them look blankly at me.. surely if the manufactures are gonna make this jumbo stuff they would make connectors.. DURRHH

Hey there.

The cables I use are heavy-weight shark fishing trace. They have a breaking strain of several hundred pounds. You can cut it to whatever length you want with cable-cutters, and just crimp the ends into loops with metal grips(also available from fishing shops). They will probably do all that for free in the shop. Just make sure you crimp the ends well, or it'll all fall apart!

The wire I've got is about 3mm I think. Not really sure. And all for the cost of a limp squid (they really are cheap, have you checked the prices lately) ahem!

Anyway, it's great for going really fast, which is how I love spinning. Yey! Uh, yeah, ummmm..... Oh yeah, it makes a cool swishing sound too. It's real light, so if, like my fire-breathing friend , you don't want big shoulders, or want to spin for hours n hours, it's great!

As for me, I want big shoulders , so fire dragon, I'll swap (I think...uh, yeah, ummmm no, yeah, Ohhhhhh, I'm kind of attached to them).

YES, I will! Spinning is much more fun than the gym, that way I can get a good work-out while I'm doing it!

I made my own set of fire poi from chains and connectors from Lowe's and fire heads from a welding blanket.
