So, I was watching A&E about Bette Midler, who is such an inspiration for me.
They showed several excerpts from her 1975 Broadway show "Clams on the Half Shell Revue" which included The Divine Ms. M herself doing long poi, while a little off kilter she did side spinning, front butterfly, a bit over the head, then it cut out.

So for all those old hats who thought they were introducing something new in the 90's, we should have known. There is nothing that woman hasn't done!

Isn't Bette Midler great. I love her movies.

I don't think it was scat but she was singing while she did it!
And I know that there was some in her latest tour as well. They were dressed like mermaids and spinning, then they sat in wheelchairs and did this choreography.

*le sigh*

How much fun would it be to get paid for that!? Poi, mermaid and wheelchair racing all in the same set!!!

I remember the mermaid scene, but not the poi bit. How cool!

I was told that poi was invented in Seatle. Clearly you are lieing. wink

[I actually was told that... by someone from Seattle.]

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

eek

Hmmm...is the world still flat to this person as well? wink

Or perhaps s/he just is a *close* friend of an ego driven staffer (cough*rh*cough) who thinks he invented fire staffing?

That is just all very funny! I needed that laugh, thank you! ubblol

Next time the show airs I will have to see if I can at least tape that excerpt.

Hugs!

I saw Bette Midler a few months ago (please don't ask why) and she and her girls were spinning poi during one of the numbers.

I was quite shocked -- and impressed.
