Hola twirly boys and girls, weavesmiley
When I was in Wellington, NZ last year I got to see a kindof 'cultural' show, laid on by the council... anyways, they introduced two guys who both played with double staff... and they were introduced as the world no 1 and 3 firedancers.devil
Is this right - does such a thing exist as a hierarchy-type thingy of firedancing?!!
If so, who decides and where is it held (not that I'll ever make it, you understand, lol... but it'd be nice to watch)?! clap
Anyways, they were decidely impressive...
Just wondering

Well, Id be very interested inwhat their names were? What did they look like?

I dont suppose you videoed them?

There are world comps for Samoan Fire Knife Dancing, did their staffs have an off centre grip?

I think theres a pyrolympics fire dancing comp in Europe which is meant to find the best fire dancers in the world - but really - thats a very large claim. There are stacks of ppl who wouldnt even go to that who are amazing dancers..

Are you sure that was what the announcers intended? Sounds a bit silly if you ask me.

Maybe they were introuduced as number 1 and 3 from a previous compettition earlier that day or some other exlpanation...

I find it very hard to believe anyone would make such a claim to a large group of Wellingtonians.

hey joshwa, i don't think the pyrolympics ever took off. at least when it was talked about a ridiculously large number of people said that it was the worst idea they'd ever heard of, and were not interested in firespinning as competition, and how would you judge anyway.

but too true, the majority of dancers and spinner aren't interested in competition.

(so who were they? wink hug weavesmiley ubbloco cool ubbangel)

well, i'll make the claim that i'm approximately 43244543245.6th in the world, however that is liable to change as population density, price of eggs in china, availability of sherbert and chance of being jumped on by an elephant all vary.

Hola,
Sorry, I should have said, they were two guys from Hawaii... and both did a short dance with double staff as part of this polynesian and island dance show. There were Samoan dancers, Hawaiian hula (?!), and Maori haka (nice to see poi used traditionally biggrin)
But you're right though, it sounded strange at the time that someone could rank firedancing. It's like ranking the best painter or musician...spank
And sorry, I didn't video it - don't have a camcorder, and I was too far back to really see the grip...
Might email Welly council tho, maybe they can explain it
I reckon I'm probably up there at about 945th ubbloco, tho, perhaps slightly better here in Belfast, since there's noone else here ubbtickled

perhaps a restricting qualifier would help:

the best technical twirler i's ever (had the sheer fortune of) seein, to (my own preferences in twirlage) is Dan of Pyroptix (doubles)

the best firedance i's ever (had the sheer fortune of) seein, to (my own preferences in flow) is Mel of Fireworksdance (doubles) / That fire fingers girl from FlameOz

you may flame me now. (I can spend all day decrying the dehumanisation of quantifying skill/comparing skills, but in the end, i *do* believe certain people have inspired me the *most* skill and flow wise!)

Hello, hello
Just to make the matter more confusing, ubblol
I received this email from Wellington council this morning...

Clare,
I understand you wanted contacts for the Fire Dancers who took part in the Ring of Fire Concert.
I hope the following is helpful :
David and Alexander Galeai. David was the 2003 world champ, Alex is the current world champ.
Daves phone contact is Cook Islands xxxxxxxx, his address xxxxxx, Rarotonga, Cook Islands.
Alexs address is xxxxxxx, Laie, Hawaii.

Regards,

(I thought it best to take out the particulars) ubbloco

Well, well, world champ, eh?!
How'd he get that?

So what do you guys think? Shall I contact these people (phone or write), or just leave the subject dangling in limbo?!!!
Lol... biggrin

Dave and Alex are both Samoan Fireknife Dance champions -
david won first in the 2003 PCC Championship, while Alex won this past championship.
Both are excellent fireknife dancers, and both do the very rare and very difficult three knife routine.....

hey Teejay,

I thought they may have been Samoan fire Knife Dancers smile - I think thats the only twirling discipline other than Baton which has a 'World Comp'.

Is there anywhere we can download some vids so we can see how good these guys are? Can we buy a DVD from somewhere?

Josh

They are the champions of the Polynesian Cultural Center's Samoan Fireknife Dance Chamionships.
However, at this point there are three Samoan Fireknife Championships : Flaming Sword American Samoa, Flaming Sword Los Angeles, and PCC.

We hope to see David and Alex in L.A this September .

You can see them both in the 2003 video - order here:
https://store.pccgifts.com/wofikncoandw.html

It's a bit pricey because it also includes the dance festival.

David was great, but I really thought that Tamaru was better.
The thing to remember is that the Samoan Fireknife dancers are judges on the criteria found here:

https://www.flamingsword.net/Specs.html

So it's pretty much an art unto itself.....

This year's competition should be out soon.....my son took third in the Junior Division - his hook broke just as he was moving into his triple knife routine..
We'll be headed to the Apia competition Sept 2,3,4 and then to L.A. for the competition on Sept 30, Oct 1 and 2.

If you want to see more of the world's best fireknife dancers - check out our website at
www.sivaafi.org or www.flamingsword.net
We'll have this year's DVD out in about 2 weeks

Lol, omigod, that is totally crazy - but looks great - island culture is so beautifully expressive.
Dammit, I wish I'd made it over to Samoa when I was in that part of the world - and good luck to your son in the championships hug
I reckon that has to be up there, at the very least, for bravest in show!!
