what?!?! how can they steal people's umbilical cords?

i heard somewhere that women often aren't allowed to keep their placenta after they give birth. it all leads me to think much more seriously about having babise at home. not that i'm pregnant, but that's just criminal - surely the money should go to the parents anyway - after all, they did make it themselves!

it was the book of my dreams.

doesn't the umbilical cord and placenta just shrivel up anyway?
They must put it in the other person pretty quickly i guess
Parents? NO!!!! the woman should get all the money... she went through all the effort to create it she deserves the placenta - the man just did his bit... I'm not sure if I had a baby that I'd want to keep the placenta... what do you do with it? hang it on your wall?

Tao, the umbilical cords are taken for a few reasons.

1) Cord blood can be used for routine genetic tests which are required by law to be performed on all newborns.

2) Anatomical/pathological examination of the umbilical cord can detect certain diseases that need to be diagnosed at birth

3) The cord and placenta are considered pathologic specimens, just like surgical specimens.

Oh, and all body functions do not stop when you sneeze. You stop breathing (obviously) and your heart will take an extended pause between beats because of a reflex response to the increase in pressure inside the thorax. However, the intestines keep working, all the blood vessels continue to regulate blood pressure, the brain keeps running, etc.

Dspeed, I don't think it's true because some patients have neurological defects where they can't close their eyes very tightly, and yet nobody has ever reported a patient coming into the ER with an eye hanging out after sneezing.

This is so off topic, but I thought I'd share:

an old custom/superstition with the bit of the umbilical cord left on the baby (Ligntning you'll know the technical term):

when it shrivels up and drops off, the custom suggests if you put the cord in a book - the baby will be interested in books... if you put it with art - the baby wil grow up interested in art...

an old form of sympathetic magic...

lightning - i understand that the hospitals need all that stuff - but personally if i have a baby i want to eat my placenta - and everyone i know who's had a baby in hospital has been told they weren't allowed to keep it - surely if they just need to do some tests you could still have most of it?

what do you mean by 'specimin' - you mean they keep them as a record or what? i don't get you.

also, while we're on the subject, why is it that in hospital you give birth lying on your back, when the est way is supposed to be sitting up or squatting? is it, like, a dignity thing or is there a reason why it's better to be in bed?

The reason that it's kept as a specimen is because it can be used to screen for signs of developmental problems that first show up in the placenta. I guess you could request to keep it, but...having seen a few placentas in my life, I find the idea pretty gross.

People always ask me what the grossest thing I've ever seen is. I've seen operations, accidental amputations, car crashes, horrible burns, nasty infected wounds, etc. But the grossest thing ever is childbirth. People get outraged at me when I say that, but it's the truth. You have never seen quite that much slime come gushing out of a human body all at once. It's wonderful, don't get me wrong, but it's really gross. I guess the placenta is rich in iron, though.

As for the position used for childbirth, we use a lot of positions, these days. It really doesn't matter what position you're in. So whatever is most comfortable for mom is what we do unless there's a specific reason for a certain position. However, at the moment of delivery, it's nice for mom to be on her back (dorsal lithotomy) because it makes it much easier and safer to catch the baby. Newborns are slimy, remember? It's not that hard to drop one, which is generally considered poor form. wink
