One problem I'm having is that certain issues I don't really know that much about, to say one way or the other. Other stuff-- gun control for instance-- I just plain haven't decided yet. Still, if I'm sitting right between Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama I can't be doing too badly.

Interesting, always thought of myself as a leftie but think I'm getting bitter and twisted in my old age
Actually i'm frequently in despair at the money-taking (not making) antics and prevelance of 'celebrity' culture and the masses' predilection for consuming it - so i guess i just don't trust the beggars to do right for themselves, never mind the wider society/community.
Truly, celebrity is the new religion and religion is the opium of the masses....
That said, personal freedom is a given - maybe I'm a Hippie Control -freak

Those definitions in the U.S. have been so distorted by the extremes on both sides that I really feel like most people are more to the center or closer to the "other" side than they realize. Extreme left-y p.c. people are just as fascist as extreme right-wingers, in my book. They're just fascist about different things, but fascism is fascism. Or people's "left" or "right" identification is determined by only a portion of the full range of issues that exist, or they identify as one way out of a rejection of what they think the "other" is as opposed to actually fully embracing the agenda of who they want to identify with. Many members of my family vote Republican, not because they agree with the agenda of the current administration, but because they have in mind a stereotype of what Democrats are and don't want to be that. It's ridiculous and points out the flaws inherent in a 2 (viable) party system and either/or thinking.
And it's all just distraction from what really matters anyway. I think if in the U.S. the conversation started turning towards class and economic matters, rather than political affiliation as defined by surveys like these we'd really start getting somewhere. /rant
faith: I just want to be clear that this post is not really a direct comment on your post or judging your politics, but your comment did remind me of this feeling I've had for a while now about U.S. political life.
