This was inspired by the following post on Jugglingdb.com
Jago Promo Clip Discussion
A quick summary would be that the video in question is, whilst of a high standard, nothing new in the realms of CJ - saying he's just ripping off Michael Moschen.
Lots of counter arguements, nit-picking, good points, pointless points etc etc.

I have to say, from my (admittedly limited) experience of different CJ'ers - they do tend to stick to the slow, mesmeric style - Possibly the "Moschen" style (?)

There are a few people (myself, possibly included) who are trying to develop more dynamic styles - incorporating modern dance styles; Liquid, waving, popping, gliding to name a few.

Ryan (Canadian CJ'er extrordinaire) made a lovely post about CJ being all about isolations - Either the ball is isolated, or the CJ'er is isolated. Whether this is their fingers are iso'd during a butterfly, the arms is iso'd during an arm roll or whatever...

Partly out of curiosity, partly out of inability - I'm trying to less and less butterfly-based moves and more and more isolations. Every CJ'er does butterflies, cages etc - and I don't really want to learn what others have done. It's such a new art form I don't see why each and every CJ'er can't go off in their own direction.

I still do lots of "technical" stuff - just to keep me in practice and open up new avenues, but my main (current) focus is glides and waving - whilst doing little with the ball other than isolating it...

Just wondered what people think smile
Is CJ inherantly slow and mesmeric or is it stuck in a bit of a rut?
Is anyone else trying new things/directions?

(I would have posted this in on contactjuggling.org but the forum their is a nightmare to use wink )

Durbs, thanks for posting that
I don't know what to make of it.
I need to watch it again

At the moment I prefer straight Tai Chi.
but I'd like to see the Dancing and the TC both done with feeling and emotion
I'd like to see it with the origial music he was dancing to, cos I cant pick up any connection between him and the music as edited .

But I do know that I really like this, Espeically kevin's legs

kevin and Carla - bei meir bist du shoen

Contact juggling?
manipulation?
With something a little more animate than a ball?

Off to a tai chi class in a moment
Do you wnat me to post some good Tai Chi clips?

i don't think he did it to music in the first place.
but i'm just guessing wink

i think we have to put our feet down on thias though before mr b gets acrried away with himself: swing does not count as contact juggling.

unless you can isolate a girl.

which is boring, not to mention very, very mean.

You could probably chest-roll a girl if you gave her a big enough spin...

Got A very long mr wiggles instructional on that kinda stuff the other day

You know the old Drome workshops and brixton and the arches?
All those were started by the just jugglers Chris Dimitri and Emanuelle... Come on maan thats an epic chapter Contact, poi and staff history. While Chis was a ball juggler, Dimitri mostly did poi and staff back at the beginning and Well in my book Em was THE old skool london Contact juggler

Durbs, Dont you think that Morris waving would suit you more?

i don't do CJ but if people are searching for new directions how about backwards. Ok i'll explain William Blake (long dead mental poet who thought he saw faires everywhere) "With out contries there is no progression" so do stuff that isn't CJ within CJ and you'll find new and unexpected avenues to explore. My favoirte Devil stick trick breaks all the rules because you grab the devil strick whith your hand. Shock horror! but its so different its fun. In fact i'm off to work out the exact opposite to Devil stick

Does this site actually exist? Or am i talking to all my other personalities?

Ah - but I was thinking along the lines of forward-stop-reverse including some ball floating...

And yes, I can do forward glides smile

As a person who is new to CJ (started in September 2003) and one who has only seen 3 other CJers in that time (since June 2004 in fact) I have found a style that I like with 4 ball. I palm spin 2 ball in each hand and then try to make as many abstract shapes as possible by twisting my wrists round whilst (usually) keeping both hands arms together (sort of like poi butterfly and pin wheel). This leads nicely to a four ball pyramid. I'm trying fire staff and other poi movements with CJ - but what I personally like the most is pretending that the four balls are various animals, machines etc and move likmy body and balls accordingly.

now by combining the ideas we've discussed so far, surely the more impressive trick in the contact/swing routine would be training the girl to isolate you! biggrin (thus not only demonstrating a jedi move but at the same time doing it backwards)

i wonder if this would be possible with poi though? umm
