I've seen some people use their feet

So just what is the limit to how many poi one person can spin?
Perhaps this is a new direction for poi to go in? Like a multi-ball juggling...

I can vaguely imagine 4 pairs poi, possibly 5 - a pair in each hand, one pair in your teeth (butterflying). It's possible to weave with your feet, but only lying on your back which means you can't use your teeth - however you might be able to do some horizontal butterfly stuff. Heck, you might even be able to do a butterfly with each foot biggrin ubbloco

Might it be possible to fo 3 or 4 poi in each hand? ubbidea

Perhaps get a head spin going with a staff too... biggrin

I've not tried 4 poi but I've had a go at double meteor. I personally think that if you intend on doing a lot of one handed poi where you won't have 2 poi leaving your hand for example 4 poi. There is only benefits in using meteor (like throws) unless you wanted to do crazy stuff like thow from 2 in one hand to catch in mouth or something, which will probably happen (I hope).

I also like double meteor because when I was playing with it I was using sock poi with a ball in each end meaning I could switch back to normal poi easily. biggrin

Poi in the mouth isn't that hard either (well by itself ubbangel) not tried it with more than one other poi in my hand.

Now, if you attached poi to the end of your staff and got them spinning independently...

Some indiginous tribe somewhere spin bolas with up to 12 ends, so if you had one in each hand...?

Other than butterly, is there much else? 2 bt weave perhaps (although you would look a lot like a demented sheep trying to shake it's ears off...)

Posted:i reckon the theoretical limit is around six sets (twelve poi).
this would be lying on your back spinning four in each hand
(in an 'X' shape - think two 'two in one hand's at right angles
to each other) and doing a butterfly in each foot.

however, i'm not entirely sure there's any point. i can
do three sets (six poi) doing a butterfly in each hand and
and a weave with my feet. i've been trying to do three poi in
one hand and it's a little difficult. but i can put my wrists
together while doing a butterfly in each hand, so it must be
possible to put all four poi in the one hand - though god knows how
you'd do a one-handed start. i think the only way you'd be able
to control it is if the poi were attached to the tips of your
fingers. this would greatly increase your control over the poi
then if you just have them attached to the base of your fingers.

as regards doing a one-footed butterfly: i'm sure it's possible,
but you'd have to spend months increasing the flexibility of your
feet.

and i don't really think it's worth it. while six poi has a certain
amount of comedy value (sprawling on your back, flailing with all
your limbs) i'm not sure that it actually looks very good, and it
would be difficult to work seamlessly into a show. any more would
take an awful lot of practice with very little return.

so, i'll just set myself a five year limit on the twelve poi, then
i'll give up. wink

no man - it has a *huge* amount of comedy value!

please, go for 7 next year... smile

by the way, funny that your theoretical limit to numbers poi is 12 - equal to the maximum number of balls flashed smile

Practice, practive - you might be able to do that caterpillar/snake wave thing whilst poi-ing. Now *that* would be funny smile

Posted:hey there rois,

when you say four in one hand do you mean all the poi spinning
in the same direction, or two poi in one plane spinning in opposite
directions and the other two poi in a plane at right angles to the
first plane with the poi also spinning in opposite directions?

while both could be said to be numbers poi i think the former has
more relation to mulitplexing four balls in one hand, and latter
juggling four balls in one hand. they're both difficult, but the second
more so.

my theretical limit was only for the second type. however, i think i
shall revise it from twelve to fourteeen. same as before, but this time
you're lying with your back on the ceiling (hey, if you can spin fourteen
poi you can almost certainly fly, but failing that you could just be
suspended there) and with the extra set butterfly-ing in your mouth.

this brings the theretical limit of poi spinning higher than how many balls
can be juggled at the moment, conclusively proving that poi is superior
to juggling.

Posted:hmm. take control of what exactly? i was never
suggesting four poi should replace two poi, nor
would i want it to.

for a four poi routine to be considered comparable to
a good two poi routine it would have to have lots of
movement, plane changes, a wide variety of tricks
and a smooth flow between them before it could be
considered a good routine. at the moment the
closest i can get would be considered extremely
basic and quite bad if done with two poi.

i see four poi, and numbers poi in general, more as
a pleasing and impressive ending to a two poi routine,
not as a replacement.

but i'm excited to hear of your six and eight poi success,
though obviously i won't believe you until i see a video.
smile

bide your time, pinky. infiltrate them. slowly we will
grow in numbers (geddit?). then tomorrow we shall
