as a child i remember the dentists as being quite fun. first of all you could play with the various bead on stick style toys in the waiting room and then the nice old lady would look in my mouth and occasionally brush it with a funny electric thing that felt all tingly and tasted nice. at the end you'd go home with a sticker saying things like 'must brush harder' and anyone who gives you free stickers can't be that bad can they?
then the stickers stop. you get introduced to the sicofant that is the orthodontist with his metal oral torture which keeps getting tighter and tighter and has to stay in for longer and longer. (when i first went he said it'd be only a year. try about 6 more like it as he milks your NHS piggy bank!) if you're really unlucky they start yanking your teeth out...
i still didn't mind going to the dentist though. recently however, i've learnt to afford him (new guy that rplaced the sweet old lady) the fear that he deserves. last year i was introduced to new levels of dental pain.
let me explain what this was. firstly my gums had become swollen (ok i admit i wasn't brushing very often). the answer to this was to cut them away with a scalpel, but before this could be acheived i first needed many many injections with a foot long anesthetic needle which ironically enough hurt so much it made my eyes water.
even this only numbs your mouth as you feel the scalpel work around your teeth (which can still feel). then after much suction of blood, they cover your mouth with putty which stays there for a week like some kind of permanent deformed gumsheild.
ok. fair enough i thought, i'll only have to go through this once... wrong i went back to see my dentist earlier this week and this morning i've just had the same thing done again but luckily on a much smaller scale, which is why i'm writing this now. i've even been taking really good care of my teeth since the last time. hopefully i won't need it again. maybe i will. he told me about an old man he sees that for some unknown reason needs this every six months!
anyway, i'm not complaining, i know that most people in the world suffer a hell of a lot more than i ever do... and that pele's accident for example was a million times more painful. i just wanted to share this with you and see if anyone else has had similar fun with the clinical torture of dentistry. personally, from now on i'm always going to live in fear of the man in the white coat with the reclining chair!*
* he's actually a really nice guy that sings in jazz bands round London. it's just what he does that could earn him a work placement in the underworld.. (and yes i know it's all for my own good but i'm gonna have a moan anyway)

I've been doing pretty well as far as not having any dental catastrohpes. I did have braces though, so I can relate to that. The worst part of it for me was not the tightening and retightening of the braces every month, but playing contact sports and having bloody lips that go stuck in them if anything hit me in the mouth. It was all worth it though because I have a great smile now!

i feel for you...
I personally have been putting off going to the dentists for far too long. Been afraid of him ever since he refered me to the orthodentist to have braces... which was 3 years of metal in my mouth
But your meeting with the dentists sounded much worse than mine! I have never even seen a needle in the dentists..and dont want to!

I have to get braces for two years... but after I get back from Germany (July 2005 ^_^)
I've heard this story before, from my mom. She's epileptic (has seizures) and when she was a kid, and they first found out, they gave her a certain drug, and one of the side affects was that her gums would grow over her teeth. For 2-3 years, she had to get her gums cut away every six weeks, and this is when she was 16-ish.

i'm actually so terrified of dentists that i have to be put to sleep.Which is quite pleasant really,only problem being that i don't remember anything for two days after the treatment......i have been known to invite people over only to not remember having done so which can lead to embarrassing mumblings and apologies......

err so how often do you go to the dentist over there? the normal practice in western Canada is every 6 months. I used to fear the denist, but after smashing my mouth up last summer I learned that he isn't such a bad guy. Not only that my denist is a master of nitris. Oh blessed noss oh how I love thee. And he's always got a full tank

oi...I am certainly no fan of the dentist. I've been to some really good one's (the only one my father went to in Dallas), some so-so ones (the cheaper one my parents took me and my brother to), and some not so nice ones (the one my parents found for me in Florida). The good one was good and never made my teeth hurt. The so-so and not nice ones always make my teeth hurt when they are doing the cleanings. I'll admit, I don't floss, so I know all is not perfect inside my mouth, but if one hygenist can clean my mouth without making it hurt, why can't others?
I've had oral surgery where I was put completely under...That didn't bother me as I was completely knocked out and couldn't feel a thing. I've also had plenty of teeth pulled. It's not quite so nice when you see little bits of tooth go flying out of your mouth (the root of my tooth had fused to the bone, but it was a baby tooth with a cap on it, so it needed to come out). I've also had my wisdom teeth pulled like they were ordinary teeth. Uhm...having your mouth kept extra-wide open so some dentist can cram his hands and tools really far back in your mouth while you are wide awake and conscious is not fun.
I luckily never managed to have braces though. However, since I still have my 2 bottom wisdom teeth, they have recently started pushing their way forward which has caused my front teeth to overlap each other, so I'd need them now to have perfect teeth again

Now that Im getting a bit older, the fear is getting worse because I know my teeth can only get worse. Im bout ready to pull em all out and get it over with.
I saw on Ripleys, once, a story of a man who hated the dentist so much that he pulled all his teeth out (over time) and replaced them with hand carved stone teeth that he drilled into his jaw/mouth bones. Dont see how thats any better than going to a dentist but I know its no any worse

orangebobo- owch! i'm hoping that this isn't gonna happen again so i don't find myself in the same position as your mum... i'm gonna look after my teeth really really well now (for a whole year at least or until i forget)
lightning- i wear contact lense so i overcame the fear of stuff being put in my eyes a long time ago (as long as it's not sharp!). having stiches on my eyelid a few years ago wasn't a lot of fun though!
wickedpixie- one of my best mates is at abber uni (he's called idris + surfs a lot) so if i ever make it to visit him we'll have to go for a spin

One of my good friends here in the States does Sedation Dentistry. For any of you who fear the dentist or cringe at the thought of regular checkups, you should go check it out. Sedation dentistry involves varying degrees from unconscious to conscious states using either oral or intraveneuous administration. These offices are popping up everywhere around the U.S. now and although they charge more than regular dentists, most people will gladly pay the premium for a better experience. Most of them also offer massages with soothing music playing (some even offer manicures and pedicures).
If you decide to pursue this type of dentist, make sure you research him/her thoroughly and get opinions from other patients. Since it involves the administration of strong drugs (many of which have amnesic effects), be sure you go to someone who knows what they are doing!
Just run a search on the web b/c there are plenty of links and articles about it. I wish you all the best with any future trips to the 8th realm of hell!

When I was 7, my EVIL dentist thought my two front teeth weren't coming in fast enough. So i had braces put on, and gold chains tied on one end to the braces and on the other end two my two front teeth (which happened to be embedded in the gums at the time)

I'll admit that going to the dentist isn't usually the best time of my life, but I don't dread or avoid going. Stop and give a moment of thought to how unpleasant life would be without them. If it wasn't for dental specialists, my mouth would probably look like a broken fence, but I have nice teeth because of dental proffessionals. Cut em some slack and pretend to be happy next time you see yours. It must be hard to work hard on helping people with their oral health all day and have all of your patients fear or hate you... Of course I shouldn't be one to preach. I get really ticked when I need to see a doc.

In the end I told the evil orthodontist man that if he didn't take them off, I would!
I kept getting asked for ID to buy petrol. *sigh* damned things made me look about 12.

lol, i had had like 5 differnet types of retainer before the head barce and all of them were as painful as hell, but nothing could prepare me for the pain the head brace caused me. My teeth wern't all that bad before the orthadontics started so i thought what was the point of going through all that pain for something so little that i wasn't really bothered about anyway???

I was a Dental Nurse for a few years after I first left school. I worked with a 30-something year old left handed female dentist who had a reputation of being one of the most gentle and aesthetically brilliant dentists in Sydney. It was inspiring to work with someone who gave so much respect and consideration to the fear, anxiety and potential pain of the patients.
It was a really interesting job - very hands on. I nearly passed out every day for the first two weeks, but then I got used to it.

Rebumping this thread from a few months back as have finally stopped being such a sissy and go to the dentist.
I used to have good teeth and never really had too many symptoms....well I did but they kinda of went away (by themselves, like magic).
Still, I wish I'd gone ages ago cause I almost defo wouldn't have had to have the root canal (that's where they take out the nerve from inside your tooth) and the crown.
So far only 3 quarters of my mouth has been worked on. If I'd have gone to the dentist earlier I probably would've needed less than the 9 fillings I've had so far. The holes and hence fillings would also have been smaller.
The only benefit is I'm now here in Thailand and getting it all done way cheaper than home. I'm definitely not suggesting economic health care is a viable option.
My advice to those who are putting off going to the dentist. Do it now! Like as in Yesterday! Build I time machine or something. I wish I hadn't listened to that ostrich, don't do it the problem doesn't vanish no matter what shaman or which doctor you go to.
Every 6 months for me from now on.

What I hate is going to the eye doctor. First there's two ways of measuring the intra-ocular pressure (the pressure in the eyeball). One is to use a strong puff of air and use a machine to record how the eyeball deforms. The other is to touch the surface of the eye with a pressure probe. Both of these things SUCK.
Then they hit you with the dilator drops. So now you spend the next 3-4 hours half-blind and with a headache from eyestrain.
And, in general, I'm one of those people who are hyper-paranoid and sensitive about allowing anything near my eyes.
I *HATE* the eye doctor.
