You know what I hate....SPAM! Not the meat, the unsolicited emails received in their thousands!!

the first email account I ever set up was my.name@provider.co.uk and over time it got spammed more and more and more. Now I decided to keep it (and apparently I'm the only person in the UK with my name so you'd think it'd not be so popular).

I never did forwarding or anything like that from it, it was my account for official stuff...you know, mailing the bank or confirming my tesco orders etc. Offical docs...you know the score.

So anyway it got so much I decided to leave it for 4 months to see how much SPAM got delivered. Within the first month it was packed to the rafters with spam so I just left it full for the remaining 3 months hoping that the spammers would give up on the address cuz it wasn't successful and they must get undelierable reports coming back all the time. So I went in and cleared out 600 of the 900 spam messages and within two weeks my account is full again! Poo!! 600 spams in two weeks!! eek

If there are any spammers reading this you're scum IMHO. Go get a real job and stop using bots to do your work for you and hassling us normal people who actually have a life all day every day. We don't want enlargement pumps or viagra or heart monitors or info about ourselves or pills without perscriptions or buying stuff in bulk or special mortgage rates or buying diplomas or starting a new life or making HUGE profits on eBay or any other crap. If I really need anything the internet is big and fast enough for me to find it myself from almost any country in the world. Go get a life...there really is a world out there.

Thank you, the RANT is over...no replies necessary but post at will....so long as it aint spam!! mad

i keep getting invitations to get my penis enlarged (do they even check if you have one?? NO!) but they sent it to an address that just forewards emails to my real address, so i can't reply from it - VERY ANNOYING.

so i reported them to the men and i hope they're going to come and take them away now.

there is a list that you can get put on that means you don't get any junk mail or anything or they get fined. I can't remeber what it's called, but my mummy's on it an apparently it really works. I'll try to find out for you.

Hey Bug...that unsubscribe button? Often it just confirms that they hit an active email account, so you make yourself more of a target.

I've got a yahoo acct. that I tend to forget about. I log into it once every month if that, and it's almost always full of "ENLARGE BODY PARTS" or "GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS" or "YOU CAN EARN ONE MILLION IN ONE MINUTE!!"

rolleyes

Too bad the one million in one minute is a farce. I could use the cash. biggrin

Never click on the links - ESPECIALLY if you use IE, it will report that your e-mail address is valid and spam you more. The same with unsubscribing, by replying to their e-mail, you're confirming that it is a valid e-mail address.

I used to get loads to my hotmail account, but it's recently dried up - partly due to the recent UK anti-spam laws perhaps - but I just went for the "delete as soon as they come in" option. Don't unsubcribe. don't click anything, just delete it.

Set up word filters to search the body of the text and send them straight to the trash bin - Mortgage, enlarge, pills etc. The more you set up, the fewer you'll have in your inbox. Especially as they're often the same thing just from different e-mail accounts...

There is certain reply that yuo can create that sends back an e-mail saying that the address isn't a valid. Not sure what it is though umm

I got a yahoo account I use most of the time for my friends etc and I find it's quite good as it'll automatically put the spam into a junk account you can empty in one go but the one I get spammed at is BT Talk 21 and it's shite at the best of times. I think that as soon as the big red house thing is finished for Pixie I'll just delete it. But why should I have to because of A-hole spammers! mad

This is for *everyone*.

Try and find a free forwarder (or if you can set up your own email accounts, do).

A free forwarder is basically a "not@real.com" address, which sends mail to a real one.

Then, when you have to sign up to something legitimately (like bigredhouse) set up a forwarder.

bigredhouse@notreal.com which will forward to my@email.com

so when you check your mail if you have 100s of spams to bigredhouse@notreal.com then guess what? you have actually authorative evidence that a company has sold your address for spam, because that account has been used once and once only, to register with their system.

Think about how many times you sign up to things...

macromedia@notreal.com
even homeofpoi@notreal.com (not that i think home of poi would do anything so shady)

any company you've registered with, website you've signed up to, etc.

it basically gives you a very handy paper trail to trace back any spam that isn't sensible enough to disguise the address it's sending to.

Then what do you do? Forward every single spam to the complaints department of the company you can now prove sold your address.

But you're not spamming them.

Forward it and put "I received this to an email account that I only ever showed your company, why?" at the top, make it an actual complaint.

When enough people do it, they get the output of the spammers * the number of addresses they have sold as spam in their in boxes.

Think about it, 10 spams a day (low number) to 1,000 of their customers (low number) is 10,000 complaints a day.

Do you think they won't listen?

do not reply to spam - even when you're tempted to give them a piece of your mind.

do not 'unsubscribe' to spam - I tested this a long time ago and under a minute later I received a batch of 4 more spam messages - it's probably worse now

do not view potential spam while online. If the email is in HTML format it will often go off and get pictures etc from the web, which will validate your email address.

Spammers are scum. But you have to consider this - it works. People have made a _lot_ of money from spam. It's only because people buy what is sold that spam continues to fill your inbox.

You think it's bad now, but spam is only in its infancy. Just wait and be thankful its mostly limited to your email ...

Another way to avoid spam is to avoid having your e-mail listed anywhere on the web.

Oh, and SpitFire, yahoo has one of the best spam blockers that any of my e-mail accounts have. These days, I only get real mail in my inbox and all the rest gets sent to a spam folder which I just routinely hit delete all on.

ooh, I like that idea. Trouble is finding one, any suggestions?

Also keep in mind that often addresses are harvested by viruses so you can't be 100% sure that the company/organization deliberately sold or misused your email address (or even that they were the source). They could just have bad or nonexistent security or virus protection. Though negligence is no defense when dealing with personal information.

No I don't because I set up my own. I manage my own mail server.

As for them making mistakes, they have a chance to answer that when I ask "why?"

As the data was in their hold, and if you read terms and conditions they if they are legitimate take responsibility for it, they *are* still responsible.

That's weird...mine just automatically go to a bulk folder when I have spamguard turned on. I never had to say some were spam and some weren't. They get deleted from that bulk folder automatically when they have been there for a month.

although seeting up a forewarding email address seems like a good idea i wouldn't try it. I have one, andf now i can't even legitimately unsubscribe from the lists because i can't send email from that address. very irritationg.

in my experience unsubscribing really does work. The official guidelines say that everyone has to have the option to unsubscribe, and the reason spam can keep going is because it is actually legal. As long as they provide an unsubscribe link that works they can't be arrested, so the links really do work.

if the link doesn't work and you keep getting them or there isn't a link in the first place, then email uce@ftc.gov and tell them - they should be able to stop it for you.

my point is not to use it as a genuine address but as a "firewall" between you and potential causes of spam.

therefore you don't need to unsubscribe from it, simply delete the forwarder when you want the spam to stop.
