The idea for this thread hit me a few days ago when i gave someone my first ever set of poi so they could learn and practice.

I dont know why i dont mind giving away my toys, to date i have given away one set of tails, one set of socks and lent someone another set of tails.

Glass gave me a fire staff once.

I know quite a few people that have given away toys to new people.

What im asking is why do we not mind giving up these toys.
Do you ever give toys away?

I've given away 3 pairs of sock poi and a pair of beamers (this one should be obvious wink )

I don't mind mainly cause I have so many poi that I'm not going to miss 'em....many I don't even use enough to justify owning.

I've lost 3 pairs of poi too and it doesn't bother me for the same reason as giving them away....I know they're still intact they're likely to be used so cool ....unless someone runs out of socks, like my girlfriend.... rolleyes

i've given a fair few sets of sock poi away, and a few broomsticks, and my first firestaff

and i left my electroglo poi on a bus, does that count? umm

Have also been given loads of lovely stuff by other people.

i won my massive double head fire poi at the first clapham spin, nearly two years ago now.

Haven't used them for about 6months though.

i lent the handles to Weasel for his fire ropes, then they got all melted by a spinner who shall remain namelessflid tongue

Special mention to Bovrilmonkey who gave me two 5ft shiny aluminium poles that are all sparkly in summer sun smile

and the lovely mr fairie ben, who has not only recently made me

The NEWmonkeyDOOMstick™

but also gave me a set of his really nice sock poi
(currently the best poi available in Oddballs, even though the staff tend to push their nasty tail poi on newbies instead mad )

Which i then promptly lost frown

i should really stop losing stuff so much

Hand on....sock poi are something proper you can buy? Everytime I've read about them I thought they were peoples sock!! What do they look like? (one person says 'socks' and I'll burst through your computer screen and shout obsenities at you!)

I gave my first poi to a friend so he could learn, I made another set for another friend too. I taught them both the basics but now neither of them bother so stuff em I say!!

I haven't been given anything tho as I only know one other guy who spins and we usually make our own stuff together, including my new broom handle and innertube....*ahem* I mean staff.

Which i then promptly lost frown

i should really stop losing stuff so much

Sock poi = ball in a cone or tube of fabric

The fabric can originally have been a sock, but doesn't have to have been.

Glass and Fairie Ben (amongst many others) make funky poi that are totally unrelated to socks. But they're called sock poi anyway, because they're enclosed in fabric, to distinguish them from firechains or comet poi or whateeever.

i think we do it cos giving away gifts that hold sentimental value feels really good if they are appreciated.
which they generally are... smile

i tend to buy new toys for xmas and birthday presents nowdays.
if that counts too then i've given away *loads* of toys...

hmmm. matt usually uses those little dog toy thingys.
with bells in the ends ubblove

haven't seen all the sperculism vids yet though so i might be wrong ubbangel

glass uses non-sock sock poi in 'drew and stick' and 'spinning in paris'.

nx? makes lovely red sock poi.
but to differentiate between sock poi made from socks (which are normally stretchy, at least to begin with) and sock poi made from non-stretchy cotton (or similar material), he calls them cone poi.

which makes sense smile

I think I may have used sock poi in Bristol last year when someone came over as I was spinning, but they were full of sand and INCREDIBLY heavy and not really much good. With balls inside sounds much better...my house mate can make things like that and I think I've just found a new job for her to do!!

Yep, I gave a pair of flags away last week smile I left a trail of equipment behind me when I travelled - and more balloons than I'd ever want to count. Flags are my main give away. Because I design and make them myself they're something special to hand over.

I know quite a few people who were given toys and they're treasured dearly. So I like to think you're really giving a gift when you give somebody your much loved toys.

Ever since I persuaded him to, all my sock poi have been made by Glass and I promptly retired from making sock poi. But now we've made Orange Poi² biggrin

Pozee gave me a set of glowstrings when I was just starting out and Fiesta Island gatherings were still a semi-popular thing to do. They're so smooth to spin... *sigh* then they got lost somewhere.

I've given away sock poi, and tons of practice staves. Etched stuff into a friends firestaff, but that turned out to be a dud idea. Its fun to see the look on their faces when they get all excited:D

I was wonderin' are you talkin about the Poi itsself or the chain/cord?

I have a few Cages I have been using for towle Poi. One is very Ornate with cool little swerly swerls to tighten up the wire/poi. Others are just to keep the stuffing in while spinning. I love finding new cages!~ and or designs biggrin

I'm fairly liberal with lending people stuff, but i prefer to do extended loan rather than give away. I've given away stuff in the past to people who haven't used them, then other people who would have nothing. ubbidea

not exactly giving away - but i left my fire poi and a brand new thing of parrafin at the bus stop once. I went back the next day and they'd gone so i just hope that whoever found them

a) knows what they're for, and
b) get much joy out of using them and gets a load more people in to spinning!

i would absolutely love it if i'd been the one to find them, so i hope whoever did appreciates it as much as i would and that they weren't just thrown out by some street cleaner or destroyed as a weapon of mass distruction!
