Copy of e-mail what I just sent to anyone not on the e-mail list:

~~~~~
Hey everyone, sorry for the group e-mail, but just trawled through a few years worth of e-mails about anyone who’s asked about Thursday meetings in Guildford.
So, I had a meeting with the council yesterday with regards to continuing to use York Road car park until the weather warms up enough to regularly go outside.
Basically it’s a “No”. It’s not at all that they don’t want us there, it’s a matter of insurance. Even though we’ve got our own, the building itself still needs to be insured – which would involve a whole new insurance policy for the car park which they’re not going to do.
Instead of looking at this as a bad thing, we can see this as an opportunity to evolve… Personally I’m amazed (in a good way) that even in January, outside (!!) we’re still getting 10-12 people, and in the car park we were around 15-20 which is ace given how cold it’s been. This summer should be excellent…
So the question of an alternative venue comes up. Basically, there ain’t much choice. As far as I can tell, our requirements are quite tight:
1) Available Thursday evenings (I don’t think we can change it after 7 years…)
2) High ceiling
3) Lots of space
4) Lighting
5) Music
6) Cheap
7) Open late, till 10/11 ish.
8) Close to station
I’ve asked the Arts dept of the council if they’ll fund the hire, but assuming they don’t (or even if they do, it won’t be for a while), we’ll need to charge. We used to charge at the Stoke, but they were oddly kind and were happy with whatever we got. (Thursdays at the Stoke incidentally aren’t free, plus raises the issue of under-18’s).
The best venue I can find is the Guildford Methodist Church, opposite Anderton’s music shop. If anyone went to Keith’s Tai-Chi classes, it’s the same room, basically a large hall, windows all around, toilets, heating (!). I think it costs around £15 an hour, i.e. £45 a night if we have it from 7-10pm/8-11pm - which would hopefully be £3 a head (the same as Spitz and Synergy in London). The trouble we had at another venue we used to use was the first 2 weeks were packed, then they dwindled out, which meant people ended up paying £15 each to cover the room. This sucked.
In return for having paid to come (aside from having a lovely warm place to practise for a change), I’d be happy (and I think others would too) to run proper workshops – a bit like Spitz – in various moves/props. We’ve got a good variety of skills going on now, so potentially, if the teachers are up for it, we can have poi, staff, juggling (passing, tricks etc), hoops, tai-chi, diabolo etc etc.
So, some quick questions, please be honest!!
1) Would you pay £3 to come? If no, what would you pay? (You can say £0!!)
2) What times would you prefer?
3) Would proper workshops interest you? If so, with what props?
4) Would you like to run a workshop? If so, in what?
If you come with other people who I haven’t e-mailed, could you ask them as well, even give different sets of answers if you’re replying for someone else.
What I think will happen is that you have to pay in advance for the block of bookings, Burnt Toast should be able to cover this if the council don’t. If the evenings work and we get more than £45 a week, we can save this for quieter weeks or start looking into buying more practise props, fuel for the fire nights etc etc. No-one’s looking to make money out of this!
I’ve already rung the venue, but not sure if they’ll be able to accommodate us at this short notice, so will let you know what the plans are for this week.
Could you all pray/meditate/dance for some nice warm weather on Thursday just incase?
If you have any comments, questions, suggestions – please let me know!
Cheers guys
Best wishes lads...
You've got a really lovely group there... and well done for the organising of a new space....
I hope it doesn't come to that here... though it seems a bit inevitable.
Best wishes on finding somewhere new hug
Durbs, you used the word 'practice' as if you were actually practising something specific, which, to be honest, sounds a bit too much like work to be Burnt Toast...
Sorry, have those flabby eyelids obscured your vision?
Only the map, dircetions and name of the venue in the first post would've shown you where it was and what it was called.
"Is it Backline?"
Yes Lex, you go there, and everyone else can go to the Riverside Centre which is where it actually is.
Sorry dude, but as it's my money, my time, my name and my reputation at risk if people break stuff, damage the room, get busted for drinking on the premises or borrow my props without returning them, then I think it's fair enough.
Likewise the fact I've supplied the last fire nights with at least 16 litres of paraffin, all of which has willingly been used yet no-one else seems to think to bring some could be viewed as mildy inconsiderate (perhaps more-so as I think I'm the only one with a job...)
I am with you on the parafin front. At the meets in Adelaide Josh and Kate used to bring lots of kero and had a tin next to it for donations. Anyone who wanted to spin a bit of fire would put some change in - perhaps you could do something like that? Or we could just take it in turns to bring the fin??!! smile
