That's the question, can they be made out of leather or must they be made out of jean AKA denim?

Im pretty sure since their name are jeans, they must be made out of the material jean, but some malcontents disagree and think they actually own a pair of leather jeans. Could such a thing exist? I think not.

type 'leather jeans' into a search engine and you will see that they are easily available, hence they exist

That only proves that they are misslabeled by ignorant retailers!

well then it comes down to this:

a) Astar is all knowing and nothing exists unless he acknowledges its existence

or

b) Leather jeans exist because they are commonly available and labeled as such

astar you asked a question, and got an answer. just because it doesn't fit to your standards doesn't mean it's not true. don't ask the question if you might get an answer you won't like.

When I bouth my first pair of leather jeans in Germany, the woman who helped me spoke English and called them leather jeans. I've had others call them leather pants.

I bought another pair this last spring in Tornoto, and all of their various styles of leather "pants" were labled leather jeans.

They are labeled as such, so thus can be and do exist. I own a pair...actually two. (One ratty pair for spinning)

pissing contest?

I didn't think it was a pissing contest.

I don't think this was anything too serious.

I've been known to be a bit dense though.

I really don't think this was a pissing contest or anything to take seriously

Doesn't jean refer to the cut of the trouser? Hence jeans can be made of denim, cord, leather, whatever.

Leather pants makes me think of underwear. That would be unfortunate.

There is a slight possibility that I am not actually right all of the time.

Depends on which country your in.

'Jean' does not exist according to the Cambrigde dictionary:
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/results.asp?searchword=jean&image.x=46&image.y=5

'Jeans' however does exist:
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/define.asp?key=42530&dict=CALD
and are described as trousers made from denim

Astar, I'm with you, no such thing as leather jeans tongue tongue tongue

My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely smile

Even though I respect your opinions, I'd bet my money on a dictionary, than on the opinions of 50% of the people on this thread? smile

If dictionary.com says that jeans can be any durable substance and the cambridge dictionary says they have to be denim, I think it's a reasonable to suggest that maybe it's an americanism no? ubbangel

Leather isn't a fabric though - fabric being synonymous with cloth, and cloth having to be woven, knitted, felted, or some such thing. I think leather doesn't really qualify unless you do something like rip into lengths, weave a cloth from those lengths, and then make a pair of jeans.

or not....

Here is the definition of jeans from websters:
Etymology: short for jean fustian, from Middle English Gene Genoa, Italy + fustian
1 : a durable twilled cotton cloth used especially for sportswear and work clothes
2 : pants that are usually close-fitting and made especially of jean or denim -- usually used in plural

so definitely no leather jeans by their point of view.

I'd be tempted to agree that it is an americanism...Here's what the Webster's dictionary has to say for jeans:

pants that are usually close-fitting and made especially of jean or denim -- usually used in plural

That would suggest you can't have leather jeans.

It's a bit like calling champagne "champagne", even if it was made in California instead of the Champagne region of France. Technically it is "sparkling wine" if it doesn't come from Champagne, but that doesn't stop everyone in the world from calling it champagne.

i was looking at it more from the "geeky over-analyzation of a mundane topic" point of view, which can be fun - but it is probably also silly...
