I wanted to get an idea of how long some of the newer people to poi have been doing it and how they're progressing. I've been doing it for around 7 months and i still feel very green. So far i've gotten down:weave forwards and revwindmillcorkscrewfountainwavebtb weave forward and rev with transitions (barely and not on fire yet)and I've just broken my practice poi trying to get thread the needle.I just want to know how others are getting on.

At 3 months, I have:weave f & bwavewindmillfountainalternate butterfly combinationlow and high turns and some transitionsI'd say I practice for half an hour to an hour per day.I've the same problem as you shizNOT...I first picked up the poi in december. This is the first winter I've ever really wanted to go away... madAm I the only one who thinks the butterfly isn't so much of a beginner move as it's made out to be? Every time I think I have it, >smack<, the poi hit each other and then, most often, me. For those of you who have it down, how long did it take?I'm off to bash some poi now. grin

just over 2 years and running and I still think I spin like shite on most days, mediocre on good days. Progression in moves is not how I like it and the winter just seems to thwart things.I still feel like a newbie on any given day.------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...https://www.pyromorph.com[This message has been edited by Pele (edited 28 February 2002).]

weave, fwd & reversemaybe a five beat weave, but i don't really get all this beat stuff yet, so might only be three - who knows? That kind of up and down one where they're spinning like pizzas round your head. all kinds of that one.Butterfly, mexican wave (where it stays over your shoulder?)I've kind of got to a stage where i pretty much know which of the moves that i can do can lead into another of the moves that i can do, and i can change direction by turning round, all without hitting myself in head. unless i get really excited!i can pretend i'm skipping rope like Rocky, but i gues that's not really a move...I just learned how to remove facial hair by 'aspirating', and i'm really keen to have a go at behind the back weaving - but i have to get my practice poi back off John first.Okay, so i can't really play the name game, but after five months and a winter in Egham; i feel like i'm having fun. yay!

I have been spinning since like November. I haven't tried fire yet, but I have a pair of Beaming poi and Buzz poi.I can do everthing on the lessons page except for the BTB weave, 5 beat weave, and the multi-beat corkscrew. I can do a bunch of my own little combos and transitions, but thats it. I am with ShizNOT. I don't think I will ever get the BTB weave. The butterfly is easy, but my hands just don't want to cooperate smileMattPS- ShizNOT.. what is that 3 point TTN you mentioned? ------------------I dreamt that I ate a 10 pound marshmellow and then when I woke up, my pillow was gone![This message has been edited by The Welcome Matt (edited 26 February 2002).]

I've been spinning since the end of August/beginning of September last year.I can do:The Weave - 5 beats forwards, 3 beats backwards with a few turnsThe butterfly - Giant, Alternate, Overhead and One handedThe low waveHigh, Low and Tuck turnsThe corkscrewand a couple of wraps and transistions.I found that I would practise loads as soon as I got my poi during the summer, but when it started getting really cold, I didn't practise as much because my parents wouldn't let me practise in the house. Now, just as it's starting to get warmer, I've broken my wrist.Oh well, looks like I'll be starting almost from scratch when my cast comes off. It's going to be hard to not just jump in and try to get back to where I was as fast as possible, but I'll probably mangle my wrist even more if I do that.------------------Bovril - It's liquid cow y'know

ummmmmm, not sure if I'm a newbie anymore... I've been twirling for about 5 months (?) and so far can do all the moves from the Art of Poi video and all on this site except for reverse 5bt weave and 3 point TTN (Which I just don't get)I seem have stopped learning moves now though as I've started learning contact juggling... Still twirl most days though.

well... as we all know, its tricky to name moves. MY understanding of the 3 point TTN is...Its like doing a weave, but doing TTN. the poi move from left to front to right in a TTN. picture a weave with the poi going opposite direction

Forgot to mention: TTN and 3 point TTN thing (although I don't really do it as TTN, just pass the butterfly across my body)Corkscrew (normal & quad)Reverse corkscrew (normal & quad)Crossovers (forward and reverse)and a few others that don't really have names, and I'm a bit shit at describing them.

At the end of last year my (then) Girlfriend introduced me to the fantastic world of fire performance, after a very messy breakup from my point of view, I didn't want to do anything that reminded me of her. Then at the beginning of this year I thought sod it I'll give it a go, so I made my own poi and staff, and have been at it since.I was a bit stupid in that I only knew how to make fire poi, and have burned myself a LOT while in the early stages. Now I can do:Butterfly- all but the BTBWeave- 3beat f/r 5 beat fCorkscrew-f/b, vertical corkscrew fmexican wave f/bturning weavestuck turn/low turnI'm working on a move where you do a couple of beats over head, then jump over the crossing poi, (like a corkscrew)Also I can't do anything BTB, I keep hitting myself in the back of the head!

ive been spinning for 6 years now and i probably would be surprised at how many moves you guys can do that i havent even thought of....i just wanted to say that there is a difference between being able to do a move and the move being more reflex like...... the longer u guys keep on with it the better your skills will be, i found that at around 4 years i sort of plateaued a bit and had a wee break until i found out why i wanted to keep on poiingso i reckon that we should practise hard, but not burn out too quickly (remember raver and his 5 hours a day for years rant) its good to learn heaps of moves quickly, but thats not hard to do (imho). everyone learns real fast for the first few years, its how we refine the technique and get comfortable with them that counts in the longer term smile

i'm coming on 2 years now and i reckon and have for awhile that its all about transitions from one move to the next.once you've got the weave thats sweet you've got it forever, but going form the weave to butterfly in different ways is the tricky bit. wraps, turns, mixing hands and stopping comets mid spin(its difficult to explain) are the transition types i use, they come in families i think, depending on individual style and mood.some moves like the five beat weave are technequically difficult but so far haven't, for me sporned many other formations or transitions. variations on the similar formations and transitions produce large and interesting families.

Well I've been spinning for about 6 months now and I can do EVERYTHING on the lessons page both forward and backward(seriously). I can also do every wrap on the 56+ wrap list as well as MANY of my own wrap combinations(see the Signature Moves thread on Poi Moves) and I have developed several different styles of dance, granted I've spent nearly every waking hour on practice, but hey, there are worse things to be doing in life now aren't there. I can do some wicked BTB wraps as well as color changing wrap/slides with glowsticks. Anyway, you guys all keep up the good work.PLUHRDOC------------------Let us Light up the Night
