I mostly swing alone 'cos the nearest people to swing with ain't so near at all. Now mostly it's just fine by me.....I n-joy doing it alone....u get to spend a lot of time on a move without minding about how long it takes exactly; u can fuck up with grace 'cos nobody's looking (sometimes I wish somebody can actually see the fuck-ups 'cos a certain few look more stunning than the swinging - u know?Impeccable fuck ups.)But there are times when I really wouln't mind having a swinging buddie. How many of you swing alone? What do u prefer -swinging alone or with a buddie? What does a buddie mean for you?Have you had any bad experiences with a swinging buddie?[This message has been edited by WildChild (edited 02 February 2001).]

Ek is nie te seeker nie. I've just started swinging myself and as far as I know theres nobody in this town who does it. But it would be pretty cool if sm1 was there to watch and help you get the moves right so i'm going to have to go with yes for a swinging buddy.

Though I work with Prometheus, he *can't* (his word) do poi, so I am all by my lonesome. I can show friends and have them go..."Wow, like that looks cool" but what I could really use is someone to go "I think it would look better if you......"At least that's my take on a poi buddy. Prom swings staff so I have companionship at least. As for Azriel's comment...there are some buddies that just shouldn't be concidered when thinking of swinging!! wink Ummm...back to porno context...sorry blush------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...

I'm all by my Lonesome too ( I mentioned it earlier) I've only had someone to swing with 2 times. I liked being able to see the moves and learn by watching. But to practice and hit myself in the head... I'd Rather be by Myself. I think it would be really cool to work out a routine with someone though. "Sychronized Fire twirling" smile I think it would look more impressive when the moves are choreographed with someone else.

I like both. Spinning by myself is meditative and i tend to learn more (i can trance out easier and let my body do its thing), but it is nice to then be able to share those moves with people. I only have one person who is comparible with poi, and I don't see her often ehough, but when we do hook up, it's lots of fun.------------------Earth my body, water my blood, air my breath, fire my spirit

Lots of times when im just in my house practicing stuff, ill do it alone, because no one else in my family does this sorta stuff, but i do have a cool buddy that lives about 5 minutes away from me that i do this stuff alot with, and we'll talk about different techniques and practice and help each other out when we can. I think its a lot more fun practicing with someone, especially if its a good friend or someone you know. I never worry about embarrassing myself or anything in front of him either, because he'll go through the same stuff too, and we just do it for fun, you know what i mean?I showed my friend how to rave with just glowsticks in your hands (people were talking about that in an earlier post, titled 'Glow Sticks'), and he showed me that you could also do cool stuff with stringed glowsticks. Now we are both into sticks and strings and its a lot of fun doing things together, as opposed to doing things by yourself.I would recommend doing things with a friend, but only if your friend is also really into this stuff, otherwise he might feel left out/bored/confused/etc.-Hapes-Nova, sticks and strings

word to that. i personally beleive the reason i can do almost all the stuff i can with stix is because i had a freind to share ideas and techniques with. i also beleive the reason i figures strings out so quickly is becuase my friend and i were able to share how we did things, so when one of us learned one thing we could teach the other making the time it tool us to learn strings really quick------------------bring light into the night

Its all in good, clean, light producing fun.

i have only twirled by myself. i think that working on a move, something thats out of ur reach, something thats takes 100 goes to perfect is bet of by urself, so u can think, experiment and trial n error without anyone watching, but its when ur out there trying the moves u can do, its bet off with a buddie to push/enspire u to keep trying to push ur twirlen futher.its hard to explain, its clear in my head, not as clear when i type it out though

I guess it has to do with our individual learning style. There is a lot of research out there about how adults learn - very differently to kids! Some of us just like to get out there and do it. Kinda trial and error. You know, give things a go and worry about how to do it properly later. Some of us like to watch someone else do it and then try it for ourselves afterwards. We learn that persons way of doing things and then add our own individual touches later. Some of us like to read whatever we can about what it is we're learning about, process all of the information and then try it once we have a very clear idea of what it is we are supposed to be doing and how we will achieve it. I'm one of this lot. My friends tell me I'm overly analytical! *giggle* For me..... the home of poi has been an invaluable resource. Most of us will identify with one learning style more than another but we use all of them at different times.... it just depends on the situationI love practicing with other people. It's sooo much fun exchanging ideas and learning from each other...butI prefer to learn (or perfect) new moves on my own. For all of the reasons everyone has outlined. I think you just have to work out which learning style you identify with and then go with it.Finn

Oats:You answered me in a teeny bit of afrikaans and I see in your profile that you're based either in Australia or South Africa. Which is it then? Are you in South Africa now 'cos then it would explain why you find it hard to discover a twirl buddie. Man, there's just so *few* poiers in this country that I know of. It gets frustrating when you *really* need sm1 to help you with, say, a move that you just cannot, for the life of it, figure out.

I've only spun with other people a handful of times, mostly the people who taught me. Most of the time, i do it by myself at home. I've also met a guy who spins here in Boston and we got together a couple of times and spun. What an interesting experience... Here's why. After i was shown how to spin the basic moves, i learnt everything from the lessons on this site, so i have a very "technical style". On the other hand, my friend taught himself how to spin and he doesn't really do "tricks", kinda just goes with the flow. Most of the time, i don't really understand what he does and he can't stick to a specific move that i'm trying to teach him, he moves on to something else right away because that's how it comes to him. So I would definitely encourage anyone to spin with others just because you end up being stuck in a mindset and don't realize there's more out there to do with your Poi.

Hmmm... I think I like playing with others and alone equally... I guess for new moves, more by myself is better cuz I get easily distracted... but its real fun to see other people doing stuff... I definitly learn by whatching, but some people I've seen go way too fast for me to pick anything up. Yes this site is invaluable! I've learnt a fair bit for staff and poi. I dont think I like working with people in groups, like for gigs/events... two or three is ok. but if the group is too big and not organized, somebody can end up getting left out.. whether its unintentional or not, it still sucks to have miscommunications. So to any kids out there starting groups for gigs/events... my advice is, keep the lines of communication well open! If there happens to be a gig that only calls for 4, and theres 5 of you.. talk about it amongst all of you!! Dont just decide and then tell the other person about it later!!! And if one person in the group isnt practising/up to par.. talk about it as a group, with them!! Make sure you really define your needs/wants/goals/ as a group 1st. Always learning, ever burning... Be safe & good to each other! Happy Swingin'...Fairie firebell
