Had the hugest bruise id ever seen, that stayed for weeks just to remind me how silly i was. Kinda sharp learning curve tho, haven't hit myself since!

How the heck do I manage that??? More than once? I've heard of people hitting themselves in the shoulders and ankles on btb moves, but getting poi stuck in their ears??? Okay maybe not **stuck**, but I still feel silly...

I've also given myself a couple of black eyes, burns on my shoulders, scars on my legs, etc etc. This is the wrong occupation for a chronically clumsy person. Still, the hits are fewer and fewer, and I love feeling so fluid. Guess that's the draw for a lot of people. Yeah.------------------Earth my body, water my blood, air my breath, fire my spirit

Posted:when i was first learning the forward butterfly about 6 months ago, the poi would always get tangled together, and their momentum would swing them directly into my crotch...ow! it was funny cuz i'd be in my parking lot, out there alone, hittting myself in the balls so hard i'd literally fall over on the ground and lie there trying not to be sick. after about 3 or 4 of these attempts(only one a day, cuz i'd give up crying), i finally realized that they don't actually enter the circle at the EXACT same time(one enters a millisecond before the other), and thats what keeps em from tangling. so, my boys have been alright since then. i debated wearing a cup while practicing for a while though.....here's another reason to laugh at me: during my first performance at a party(i still didn't know much of what i was doing), i attempted to make up a move to get myself out of a weird position. it was kind of like a tuck turn, but when i pulled the poi out from that side and upward, they tangled together and started heading straight for my face!!!! it was one clump of flaming wick, and i had no way to avoid it.(i guess i didn't think to raise my arms super-high and have it go over my head. hmm) anyway, the flaming mass smacked my forehead, then fell foreward, untangled on the way down, and presto!!! i was now spinning forwards again. i had headbutted my poi to reverse directions. i about shit my pants, but i think people thought that was some crazy move i did on purpose. i don't think i'll be trying it again though.....-Heph

Posted:God I've taken my share of crotch shots. The first time I performed with fire I did one luckily it was over just enough not to hurt me and the collective gasp of the crowd was great. I'm teaching a couple people poi and the girl I'm teaching took a pair of old pantiehose cut the legs off and stuffed a pair of tighly rolled socks into each one, then just a simple loop on the end and she had a set of training poi that are very easy on the fingers and don't hurt at all when hit. They do like was talked about before with surgical tubeing and get longer the faster you go but are a cheap painless alternative for those just beginning.

How is it ever possible to feel safe and secure in a world in which everyone dies?

I kind of enjoyed it, though. 'Battle wounds' and all...

I have nearly taken a nipple off a time or two (dozen), and I think the back of my calf looks like a map of the Great Lakes region from bruising when I practice a new behind the back move. When I got my new tatoo it seemed as if my poi literally gravitated towards it. Sometimes I swear these "toys" have minds of thier own! My son got my housemate in the nads with his staff two days ago (I laughed. I told the housemate not to go near him but did he listen? Nooooooo

).But right now my favorite is Prometheus. He smacked himself square center of his forehead, looks like he's growing a unicorn horn!!!! It's not bruised, just bumped up really high. We laugh and keep swinging...what else can you do (after the rolling in agony is done of course?

Posted:oh my god pele!i have so hurt donovan (my honey and another member of the troupe) trying doubles poi moves with him. whacked him on the forehead, whacked him in the eye... and yep got the crotch as well...although he seems to get that spot pretty well on his own. practices aren't complete without donovan lying on the ground motionless for 5 minutes in agony.as for personal wounds.... fat lip learning the behind the back weave- and a black eye once, god knows how that happened... i think my brain blocks those moments out...

Posted:As long as we are all telling stories about injuries, i might as well jump in. After practicing for a couple of weeks I invited a few people to my house to show them what i could do with the poi(non-fire). All of them proudly declared "I can do that" and they all wanted to try it. So i taught them a couple basic moves, started with forward and reverse swinging, then crossovers and the butterfly. The whole time i told them to take it slow, and just try to get the technique right. One kid started doing the butterfly, and once he got it right he sped it way up, about three or four times the initial speed. It looked good for a couple seconds, until he messed up the timing a bit and both poi colidied on their way down in the center. They hit each other and altered their trajectory ... straight for his nuts. 10 minutes later he was curled up on the ground. All i could say was "I told you to take it slow."As for myself, i've always followed my own rule and taken it slow until i get it right. By the way, Koosh balls in the end of socks make a painless alternative to tennis balls.

Posted:Probably the most entertaining thing i've done to myself (at least for those watching) was when i was teaching myself how to do what i know know to be called a "butterfly". I had just got the circles going with a poi in each hand ... my wrists smacked together and stopped moving. The poi however did not stop moving and wrapped themselves tightly around my wrists until the wicks came to rest on top of my hands. I ran around for about minute trying to wrestle my way out and everyone had a good laugh at my fire escapism act.Unfortunately i burned my hands quite badly and couldn't use scissors for a week.raevon.

Still, the images in my head are amusing. Maybe we should put together one of those blooper tapes like they have for sports..."Great Blooper Moments in Swinging" ...herm, maybe I should figure out a way to add poi and staff into the title so it doesn't sound like cheap porn!

The worst injury I ever had was when I first did overhead butterfly with fire, the chains got totally tangled and I hit myself in the face thus burning off my eyebrows and some hair at the front plus my nose was twice normal size. Am a bit more experienced these days. Long live the life. One love, Thistle.

Funny, I dont think I've ever hit myself there, maybe its cuz I'm a girl?? I tend to hit myself in the head, with whatever, poi, staff, devilsticks, juggling balls, havent beaned myself with the diabolo yet (knocking on wood). Dont hit myself much any more but yesterday, cracked myself in the eye/nose with my devilstick, got a wee cut on the nose, and a very red eye!! Knocked myself out when i 1st started d.sticks!! hit myself square on bridge of nose right between eyes!! only left a teeny mark but my nose bled for like an hour, and it was swollen and puffy for a day. That made me slow down considerably, and be much more careful!!! Safe Spinning y'all!! Fairie firebell

Went from a weave into a windmill and !Wham! hit myself right on the nose. Ouch! I don't mind hitting myself on the body as I get bashed around more in karate (I'm not very good) and whats another bruise. Anyhow after that I decided to give it a rest, I'm being interviewed by the local telly tonight and it wouldn't be so good if I had a black eye! After the pain my nose felt I'm glad I don't have balls!!

Posted:Injuries, ahhhhh, you make friends with your toys after a while, they've hit you in the face, on the head, soon you get to know them too well. One of the first times I was doing fire I was swinging with some dodgy torches and going way too quick, one hit me smack in the ear which swelled up, bled, went black and took about three weeks to heal. My left ear is still slightly mishapen after about three years. Another time I was performing with fire poi when I hit myself on the head, but kept on going. The crowd were going "WOW! LOOK AT THAT!" and I was thinking, hey, I must be goood, then I noticed the top of my head was getting warmer and there was a strange smell of burning hair. None of the bastards watching thought to tell me I'd set my head on fire.
