Posted:We needed a video thread of our own, so here it is

We just put up a new video on our site, click
here

The latest video is our Team Compilation and lemme tell ya, we're pretty happy with it. It's [31 MB] in size, so it may take a moment or two to download. You'll notice right away that we used a popular tune, but it's cuz I believe there wasn't enough fire spinning in the original video and the music is just too good to pass up

Hope you guys enjoy!

Posted:trying to get accross a video representing newbe's is hard dan, i know where every one is coming from.
as it was said that some of these people have only been spinning a month or two is dropping a cat amongst the pigeons here.
as they are newbe's thats kewl we were a newbe's once, but as you know were past that stage, well kindof... were forever learning right? no end to bettering ones self.
i like to watch them as i have said above, it takes me back in time but also get to look at they way others have been taught and the moves and styles incorporated when learning, its a good method for learning to teach and be taught, as discussed in the teaching thread people learn more quickly these days thanks to hop and many of us here.
so for me anyway i'd have prefered to have seen 30 seconds of a few moves rather than one move alone. just my logic and thoughts from my perspective, not in any way to harm or offend.
be kewl and dont be put off by me.

Posted:I agree PK, I was confused as to why the 'large people spinning' comment was taken offense to. And Mistress Aurora, you don't NEED a signature move, you don't NEED to stand out from everyone else, do you? I see people proclaiming that they do it for fun and stuff like that but then I see people getting upset when they are copied or when they think they do a unique move which doesn't happen to be unique at all. Get over it, just go out and spin. It doesn't matter if 1 or 100 other people do the same thing.

Posted:Burn baby burn!

I want to tell everybody about my friend Santa. As a little child, I knew him. My parents told me that he went everywhere in one night, giving presents to all of the children of the earth. Now I know about other religions beliefs (including Christians in Africa who did not believe that American Christians would believe in such a thing) and the "truth" about the bodhisattva Santa. People keep saying, "no its your parents." I so completely dissagree with this. I think the reincarnation of St. Nick embodies himself in every parent who believed in him as a little child to continue that magic for his or her children. If a child still understands that Santa is alive, everyone around them plays with it. Isn't that their reality? I think we need to do the same with beginner spinners. Their new moves are great advances in their personal ability, and in many ways most of the joy in learning happens at this stage of learning.

When I am learning a new move, I am expanding my understanding of reality, as many previous posters have also aluded to. If we know that we are going to still be learning more new moves, and we haven't discovered the "answer" yet, then are we really any more evolved than the children who believe in Santa?

I am desparately trying to turn this thread away from the burning tower of posts that it is now. My reality is expanding every day and hopefully soon it will include the actuality of hyperloops instead of the version that I imagine in my head. I am envious of anyone who has a good teacher who can help them and give them the secret to their next evolution.

Posted:NickC I never said that I was the one who came up with the move, I was just stating that that move is the best move I'm good at and can perform it pretty well.I'm not the type of person to get mad if others can do the same move.Actually I'm happy that others can do the move so other people can learn it too and then pass it on to others.I just referred to it as my signature move because that is what I'm known for in our troupe...One person is known for breakdancing and another is known for doing the splits while twirling staff.I did not mean for this to be of offense to anyone. In the thread of Silly Human Tricks, Pele told me that she too can do the bending over backwards move while doing poi.I didn't take offense to it I was actually glad that somebody else can do it too.I don't want ANYONE thinking I'm stuck up at the fact that I think I'm the only worthy one to perform this trick.I think maybe I didn't explain my position on the matter of my signature move.Another reason I refer to it as my signature move is because people in my area outside of the poi community aren't as flexible as me and so have always known me to do that move and others which would be difficult to incorporate into poi.My friends know me as being able to do that...They have never met or seen anybody else do that move before...(remember I'm refering to people outside the poi community).PK I know you were just giving us your input, I appreciate it.It was just that I was proud to be in the vid and then felt shot down because I didn't perform up to par.I think we all on here got our wires crossed.

So to make amends(sp)...PK thank you for your critism...Santana thank you for letting us know that you had asked for PK's oppinion on the matter.I sorta didn't know you had asked him to critique us....NickC thank you for letting me know that I had not clarified my statement of 'signature move'.I hope that everything will be fine from here on out.I will continue spinning and getting better at my moves and dancing.

Posted:I think the problem (if you want to call it that) was the difference of definitions of a 'signature move'. I take that to mean that the move is unique and sets you apart from the average spinner. No problem though, I'm glad you and everyone else is progressing and pushing each other to keep learning.

Posted:To PK and the rest of the thread -

Sorry for the outburst, first off. Big misunderstanding, and once it was clarified things seemed more polite.

I wrote what I did, but not because I am mad at anyone, think anyone's stuck up, or whatever... no negative feelings. I had a couple of enthusiastic raw recruits who felt like they'd had their dreams shot down, and since I'm somewhat of their sensei, teacher, master, whatever, I felt like I had to at least stand up for them.

I do think that, among all the new video threads and "jedi" moves descriptions and so on, that we should still keep an eye open for new spinners and budding talents.

Nobody has been hostile or rude to any newbies on HoP yet, and that is wonderful. Perhaps we should divide the video sections up into separate categories, like technical, instructional, humorous, newbie introduction, whatever... give them a little bit of a genre so you know what to expect?

dio, props mate, i dont blame you for posting and sticking up for your protoge's [sp?]. partly my fault for not making it clearer that the post was for dan.
i never meant for any one to feel cut down and hurt, my actual feelings on you guys is a whole lot of the opposite of my opinions on the video and i firmly stand by that.
i was actually thinking of some thing that i am about to go email malcolm about in a few mins. so hopefully watch this space

i dont believe in santa either, else i wouldnt have felt so badly that i couldnt even aford to buy my gurl or my family and presents for christmas. thats how much i hate christmas. christmas is about monetary purposses, i am anti government and monachy, so any thing that lines the pockets of the fat cats i dont stand for.
my feelings, my belives.
nice post though.
be kewl.

Posted:I disagree fairly strongly with the 'divide up into catagories' idea. In a movie, be it hollywood multi-million dollar productions or some people in their back yard with a camera, I like to be surprised. Not necessarily in the scarey surprise sense (not saying it's not good every now and then) but if someone puts in a section called 'hyperloops' and then it shows a couple of people doing hyperloops then it loses that 'whoah' effect. You know that it's coming so you're expecting something cool and if it's not cool then you're dissapointed. Using Rubbish as an example, if PK had put in 'isolated buzzsaw fountain' right before (insert name of person who did it, I forget) did it, then I wouldn't have been saying 'holy crap, I didn't think anyone could do that'.

oh it was mineiro/bluecat that did the isolated buzzsaw fountain.

nick i have a most prized video in my collection of a canadian guy called nick , video is backyard style production but the video still amazes me every time i watch it. i feel the warmth and soul and passion that went into the video from the point of view of me watching some one spin and leaving me in awe, its the most amazing video i have ever seen of some one having a burn.
people can acomlish variable things from different production techniques, be it technical, beginer, some one having a burn or just some thing for fun. all dependant on what the creator is trying to get accross i hope the point they set out to do is acomplished.
obviously the canadian nick video im my collection reached a level of deep feeling than i thought i would see from some one burn.
i hope all the collaboration of production ideas can supress to many good things.

being kewl....

Posted:Had a good spin at the Meat Fest drag queen competition tonight, got some decent video but have yet to edit and upload. Our newbies really shined at their first performance! I'll have to work with Santana to get it done probably in a couple days, as I have an exam in mechanical vibrations tomorrow that is gonna me. School must come first after all.

Does anyone want drag queen footage as well? Or just the spinning...? The fest was quite hilarious so I'd like to include some of it if nobody objects.

Posted:That video was quite cool, I especially liked hiw speed controll, it was almost perfect. Think he bonked a bit on a turning BTB weave, but hey I do that too and he recovered well. He did some rather funky isolations that I am gonna have to try out for myself.

In terms of video, I have two comments. First off, the video experienced a problem that our team has also been dealing with... exposure. If we leave the cam on auto-exposure, we get sunbursts on chains. On manual, it's too dark to see the spinner if we tone down the fire at all (ref: our compilation video). Does anyone have any suggestions on how we could work around this using a basic Sony Handycam?

Secondly, I would like to know how he got the video at such high quality. Our vid was about the same length, but 5 times the size and not nearly so smooth (choppy in places). I noticed his format is WMV, whereas ours is in divX avi format after we compress the MPEG. What's the best way to go about inputting video to the comp? We're using Santana's USB cable from the camera straight into the computer, but would it be more worth my while to buy a capture card or something? Anyone with this kind of technical know-how please PM me... I'd like to turn out higher quality at lower filesize.

Video is poi with very strong and calm tai chi influences.
I like it. Its very good style.
But it aint no holy grail, you, anyone can reach this and far beyond.
Same as any video, Watch it enough times and you'll start criting it, think, its more than a year old, and nick still spins regularly.

Dio, there's a lot of sweet moves, but there ain't no isolations in that movie.
