Rather than get into yet another heated debate I'm finding myself getting caught up by little thoughts of the day that I find interesting.

Yesterday I thought: How many 'democracies' are involved in this conflict that have huge anti-war sentiments among their people and what does that say about democracy? (Not the US, we're all for it by opinion polls but so many others.)

My random thought for today was being utterly bothered by the American media using the word 'blitzkrieg' to describe the impending US ground advance. BLITZKRIEG?! Will our tanks be sporting those cool swastika flags as well?! Will we be naming our POW camp 'Auschwitz'? Well, I know there's enough people out there calling Bush "Hitler" so maybe...

So what's your random, Seinfeldian, insignificant observation about this predicament? (No deep political posts, only small insignificant rants please!)

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

Whenever I see the media reports on the war, espically the US media, my thought is: War is porn for all the family. But while most porn focuses on fun stuff like ice cream, war is about death and destruction. The war reports glorify destruction and use catchy phrases like "Target: Iraq" and "The showdown". The truth seems to be that everyone is sitting on their cosy sofas watching snuff on the TV.

It's a funny old culture we've built ourselves.

I was thinking the "21st century soldier" equipment is just around the corner. This amongst other things mean high tech soldiers will have cameras mounted on their guns. If people are disturbed by watching the war footage of the news today wait untill they have first person camera angles of soldiers engaging in close range combat.

Serious war thought; this is going to be damn short, I wonder if Bush will manage to figure out that if we don't get seriously involved in rebuilding Iraq (Japan reconstruction style) it's gonna hurt his chances at ever being respected internationally beyond all repair and fore the rest of us Americans to work our asses off to get everybody to stop being pissed off.

No one knows me like I do.

my thought of the day has been the same since wednesday...

i just think generally about the bombs, how much they all cost... the differences between the US and Co and Iraq's technology.

but just today i had a new thought- watching the news and seeing the Iraqi soldiers surrender... i thought- how many others will follow? and will it change any outcome of the war? (i doubt it... but hey its a thought.)

And wherever you've gone and wherever we might go. It don't seem fair. Today just disappeared.

I thought it was amazing when an American representitive (of some sort, can't remember who or what) basically admitted that Iraq was only the start and there were loads of middle east countries next(for regime change). I still can't believe I heard that...

I read in the snooze paper that Saddam launched scuds when the attacks started.. I thought that the weapons inspectors said that he didn't have any.. also the fact that the he also fired Al-Samounds too.. I guess Hans Blix now knows why he only said he had 36... Saddam is a liar, that just proves he's hiding stuff.. what worries me now if what else..

I can't support the war- or any war for that matter as I am a pacifist.. but I can't think of an alternative solution..

Without deviating from the thread too much. I have to say that from what I understand the Al-Samounds were border line illegal anyway, in that once they had warheads on them they wouldn't be outside the limit(I think?). As for skuds, they always knew he probably had about 30, so I can only assume they aren't illegal. As for Sadam being a liar, yes. Every government lies.

I live in a world of infinite possibilities.

NYC commented that despite living in a 'democracy' we don't always do what the majority of people want.
The US, UK and Australia all have systems of government based on democratic election. That doesn't mean we live in a total democracy where the majority decides what is best to do in every case. Would you want to live in a system where that was true? Lynch mobs are true democracy in action.

But this threads more about media now. I've been watching BBC and even they're sickeningly entertainment based. But the public has a 'right to know' apparently. I agree that our government should be held responsible for its actions, but do we need to hear about everything 12 seconds after it happens? (or even the day before it happens in the "What's Going To Happen Next" section). I wouldn't say its actually being presented as entertainment on purpose, but entertainment is all that the media know how to produce these days.

(Anyone UK people watch 'The Day Today' news spoofs written Chris Morris? Highly recommended, particularly the "It's WAR!" episode.)

I kinda hoped it wouldn't since there are already more than a few threads debating the war. There are plenty of venues to discuss the morality of the war already.

I'm not upset or anything. I just liked the quick little perspectives that others were giving. Like Dom's "Snuff Porn" analogy which is cute.

I read in a comic the other day that "WAR" is an acronym for We Are Right.

In a twisted, vicious way, that makes sense...

In times of tension what gets me is the way the media tailors entertainment to cater to nationalist resentment. Like the (now illegal to show) Bugs Bunny episodes of the WWII era, now we have to deal with mean-spirited satires of the French... a group that until the last few months was a buddy in the geopolitical realm. How can I find this sort of thing funny when I know it was inappropriate not too long ago, and will no doubt be considered inappropriate (like the Bugs toons) in the future?

You'd think with "Freedom Fries" they could at least change the recipe or something, you know... some sort of snappy new potato innovation?

What hits the fan is not evenly distributed.

Dan Rather (one of our primier national reporters) just informed me that Iraq is a "dangerous place to be right now". So those of you guys that are planning to hang out there this weekend may want to be extra careful.

(Any Iraqi firespinners should probably switch to lamp oil instead of whitegas at least until the "shock and awe" campaign is over.)

My random war thoughts of the day revolve around Israel and Palestine, since they've been kind of a side issue lately.

First, we always hear about suicide bombers going into crowded nightclubs in the areas where all their conflicts have gone on.... Why are people going out clubbing if their neighborhood is a war zone?

Second... referencing the frequent killings that go on in those areas, and how small they are in terms of land mass (roughly the size of a US State), how long until the population of one or the other decreases to extinction? I mean, they're picking each other off on a daily basis in groups average size of 5-15 people (usually by suicide bombing), in a tiny spot of land that doesn't have many high-rise buildings (not very populated). How long until one wipes the other out?

What hits the fan is not evenly distributed.

Actually, many more people are killed by car accidents in Israel each year than bombings. And Israel is the size of a very small state. Vermont, perhaps. Tiny. A former girlfriend of mine is going there soon for her brother's barmitzfa (I've no idea how to spell that.) I'm a bit concerned.

Absolutely True Cassandra! The House of Representatives' cafeteria started it in Washington DC (I think) but it's very much true and most everyone is talking about it. It made the front page of the New York Times. There is some pretty serious Anti-French sentiment going around on behalf of the hawks and Pro-French sentiment on behalf of the doves.

Heck we even sucessfully kicked Nomad out of the country.

Oh, and I've been telling my friends who see photos of you that you're English, I wouldn't want to seem unpatriotic by being friends with a French girl. You don't mind do you?

Meenik, where is the Bar Mitzvah taking place ? which air company is she flying ? when exactly is it ? I have been over to israel quite a few times where in the news it looked like Israel was in a bad bad situation and I was safe, but this is a special time and I have to say she should think twce and honestly they might even consider postponing the bar Mitsvah... sorry this is TOTALLY off topic my bad...

Well the renaming of products was actually done on part of major corporations like kraft. It's not like the american government ordered these things to happen. Not that I am defending the american government. Just thought I would set things straight.
