Just to add to codys tips, when applying the metal tape I usualy start with a verry tight strate wrap where the screws will enter the wood. Wood screws tend to split the wood and the tight tape will hold the wood in place so the split stays a reasonable size. Also to keep the tape from unraviling off the shaft over time, when applying the tape to the shaft heat it up with a torch and rub a round tool up and down the tape on the shaft. This helps the glue soak into the wood and it trains the metal to the shaft.
