Wood screws tend to split the wood and the tight tape will hold the wood in place so the split stays a reasonable size. Also to keep the tape from unraviling off the shaft over time, when applying the tape to the shaft heat it up with a torch and rub a round tool up and down the tape on the shaft. This helps the glue soak into the wood and it trains the metal to the shaft.
