how come sometimes when you hit post reply, it shows you the thread at the bottom of your "typing it in" page, and other times it just puts you on it's own page? is there a way to affect this?

As far as i can see, its shown when the thread is less than a page long. If its more than one page, the poor little non bandwidth users (everybody say awww) would have to load a huge page they probably don't want.

I, personally like to view the whole page on the bottom of the reply page because sometimes I go back and read over what I was replying to.
Perhaps we can have it as an option to view the page at the bottom or not?

It's like flid said - if you reply to a thread that has more than a page of posts, it doesn't show you the original thread.
It does, however, give you a link that says:
