Saturday the 23 of november, I'm going to have a show at Metropolis, a giant rave-event here in Norway. More info @ www.metropolis.as

The crowd is going to be between 6-8000 people...
And I'm really nervous!!
I have done a show in front of 600 people and that was not a problem, but I feel that this is something else..

I need some tips on how to prepare my-self,
how to act on the stage,
and what in the world should I charge??
My act will only consist of fire-poi, and it will last around 7-8 minutes.
Because of the size of the arrangement, I'm considering to charge around 90 US dollars...
Anyone who think diffrent?

This show will help me spreading the art of fire-spinning here in Norway.
I'm also considering starting a poi-school in my home-town.. Maybe building a little poi-community...

Picture all of them in their underwear! However, that may be undesirable in certain cases.

no realy man, it's all good! I am sure you will do fine. Just focus on the fire, ignore the audience till the flames are out. then give a big bow. they will love it!

Congratulations! That's a fantastic opportunity

I really think there's no difference between performing for 600 or 6000... Regardless of how many people are watching, I have no doubt that you always do the very best you possibly can!

All you can do is give it 100%, you know.

You may find a larger audience less terrifying actually - I know I do! It's more of a rush than anything; so the unadulterated bliss of having a large audience certainly outweighs any nerves or fear.

My advice to you: LOTS of energy; love what you do and make sure the people watching you see that you love what you do. It's infectious.

Pricing - I really can't give you advice there. There are some great threads around though:
This one talks about underbidding

Hey, that's great! Fire in Norway...Viking funerals!
Having performed before even bigger crowds at Burning Man, I'd say the secret was picturing them all naked. Wait a second, they were all naked!
Seriously, I recommend not ignoring the crowd: make eye contact, shout and yell to them, get them to cheer and be part of the show, walk up to different parts of the stage and work the crowd. You are giving them a gift. Be proud, self confident, and show it. Take up all the room you have. Get some cheap pyrotechnics like smoke pots and have a Wizard of Oz like entrance. And have a kick-ass routine prepared with a beginning, a middle and a climax. Work with a choreographer if you have to, Don't just walk out there, ignoring the audience and freeform spinning until your poi go out.

The money seems right.

whatever floats your boat man. I don't think I could ever remember a correographed routine...but if you can, "more power to you". I sugested ignoring the crowd for two reasons.

#1 if it makes you nervouse???

#2 the crowd isn't going to burn you!!!

I can see how playing the crowd can come in handy, just don't do it if it's going to mess you up.

A bigger crowd is less personal, it's a mass you're performing for, not a group of individuals. The trick, which has been stated, is to make them think it's personal.

Good luck!!

Don't worry! You do great...when you're preforming you won't be able to tell that there are 600- or 6000.
As far as money goes, for such a large event I think you may be leaning a little towards the "not enough" side. Are you having to travel to this gig? If yes, they should cover it. Are you going to have to arrange for a place to stay? If so, they should cover it. What about meals while you are in town? Are they giving you a dressing room/area? etc etc.
I have learned from experence that these kinds of productions take s**t loads of money to successfully pull off, so remember that these people most likely have a budget of more than $90. Don't let them take advantage of you or your talent...

Thanks everyone...
I know that I would get the support & answers I needed here @ Home Of Poi.

I think that you folks are correct in the fact that I probably will disappear into my state of mind as soon as I light those wicks.
I have experienced it before, and since I'm not suffering of Ochlophobia - "An Irrational Fear of Crowds or Mobs." , I think I will do just fine...

It is actually a week to day... And I'm counting the hours. Not because I'm nervous (not anymore ), but because I looking forward to it...

BTW, I'm working on a norwegian poi-site (the only one as far as I know). The adress is "www.firepoi.tk". It ain't finished, though. But I have a few nice photos in the gallery section. Would be extremely cool, if some of you guys could drop a line or two in the guestbook.
The norwegian word for guestbook is Gjestebok.

Love you all folks!

Well, it looks like the gjestebok page isn't up yet, but that site looks really nice, Star-Spinner.

The fact that i only understood about 10 words was not a barrier...

Congratulations, and mangitakk for showing Norway what firepoi is about...

Oh... Sorry 'bout the link...
I have fixed the guest-book now.
So now you can write a small novel if you like (not that you should, but you could, if you would).

I'm impressed over the norwegian-knowledge here. "Viking funerals" and "mangitakk"...
"Mange takk" is the norwegian phrase of "thank you very much"...

I'm going to put a video of my-self performing on my site very soon...

To days left to Metropolis 2002... My biggest spinning gig so far... Whi!

i'm going to greatly enjoy looking at your site in a day or two. and i'll be posting something there, say in your guestbook, to show you on performing which you may find useful even after, in fact especially right after this gig of yours.

congratulations on the kind of gig we all love the most. US$90 sounds good.

i saw this too late to be of any potential help beforehand; here's my afta-party wish it was a blast, along with flid. how did it go?

molten cheers,

Sorry about the late respons!

My show @ Metropolis went terrific!!
It was the biggest rush of my short life...
Me, myself on a stage in front of 5000 raving people, two fire-breathers on each side which breathes huge jets of fire, and in the middle, little me spinning fire like I never spun before..
It was exhilirating!!

Have posted some pic's in my gallery @
Please leave a message in the guestbook!
Have a couple of video-shots of me, which I'm going to edit...

Thanks for the support, folks!
You are the best!

Good on you, brother in fire!

Precisely one week later halfway around the world in Mexico, Moongirl and I were spinning flanked by firebreathers from our sister group Saturnalia.
The crowd was smaller and the music couldn't have been worse (the Cure and Guns and Roses), but we had a great time, too.

Great pix. You are truly a pioneer!

Now I have implemented "multi-language" support in my website... Sound nice?
Well, I just translated my page into english, so that you folks would be able to understand what's on it.
I have also bought my-self a domain: " www.firepoi.net " Pretty funky, eh?

Thx for the guestbook-message, Jade Lynx.
Appreciate it. "Mange takk"...

I have now realized that there are several thousand "poi-shops" around the world... I just never thought of it before... Pet-shops! They sell dog-leashes, swivels, and everything you need to make poi-chains! Both string and chains. And they are all designed to have a 20 kg pulling dog at the end of it, so they don't break easily...

See, this is what I love about Norway. The Norwegians are such beautiful people. Their language sounds completely wacko, but the people are beautiful!
