A fire trident will likely look like a staff with wick on one end...not really a great toy.

Unless you want tpo put wick on the three prongs, which sounds like fun, but i can't really seethe advantage of it...

guess I'm an old Slartibartfast thoug...

I'm the guilty party who put the idea of a fire trident into Flip's head, and the plan was to have a wick on each prong and one at the other side. We always see multiple wicks on toys but i think having them side by side would look interesting, given that the trident was positioned correctly.
So long, and thatnks for all the fish!

Hmm, interesting.

Ok, I'm going to have to try explaining what I mean without knowing the correct terms

Anyway, first thing. A staff doesn't just spin end over end, but also rotates on a different axis as you spin it right?

So if a trident was spun like a staff, the outermost points would be doing a kind of spiral around the centre one as it's spun.

Therefore, if you had a trident with a wick on each point, you'd get really cool looking spiral trails, just as long as the flames coming off the wicks didn't all merge into 1 mega-large flame

Thinking about it, if you can make a strong enough join to make a trident, why not go the whole hog and make one with 4 extra points rather than 2?

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Oho, but it wouldn't be a trident anymore would it? It'd be a...quadradent or something. Or just a pitchfork.
See, the have these handy little elbow joints for plumbing with mulitple openings that we though would be perfect.

it would be massively interesting to have one with three prongs at each end...lots of fire and perhaps some cool effects.

Always Beautiful

yeah i started thinking of that since people don't seem to intrested in the regular trident idea i thought with a double ended trident the moves would look insane.

For most stable twirling characteristics I think the prongs would have to arranged like tripod at each end and not a fork, or you'd get eratic effects, especially in throws.
In terms of construction, I was thinking that the simplest would be some sections of alu tube bashed flat on one end and bent to a tilde or lightning shape then hose clamped to the central staff section. Problem being that all 6 head pieces would have to identical or close as and well attached. Also this would make fully heavy heads, great for momentum though.
But you could light one end and it could stand up on it's own! Starting moves with a free standing staff anyone? umm

Why not have the main staff, ie. one long prong in the middle, then have four extra wicks around it? A setup kind of like those big, glorious candelabra the beatutiful but tragic heroine wanders round with in gothic novels.

That sounds cool, if you were to attatch the prongs on though you would have to make sure they are welded on pretty fast or sumin bad could happen umm

You know what would look amazing with that sort of fork-like multi-wicked trident? A dance routine along the lines of what Fred Astaire (I think) did with his hat rack.

E pluribus unum, baby.

i think it sounds like a great idea.. but remember if you're going to have the three prongs on the one end to counter weight it on the other side so it would spin evenly, so it won't be so heavy on the one side... or it will be hard to control. but that's just my opinion... give it a try, i'm curious as to how it would turn out!

Now to refresh this thread as a logical step in the Martial Fire Arts - Fusion attempt:

Trident Kung-Fu style

I have seen some wicked trident action, where the guy had wicks attached to either point and not only did some oldskool staff movements, but also some contact (in which the trident was rotating, while vertically running over his front and back)...

I've been using stainless steel plumbling pipe (for hot water)it 's a lot thinner than steel pipe so lighter and stronger.People will tell you it needs specialist welding but if you don't mind your welds going rusty(unlikely with parafin anyway)you can weld it with an ordinary mig welder more flames more spectac love and light jumblymamba..So far I have had no fauires but I employ the best welders i can I'm doing 10 metre drops..Ideally they would all be tig welded and where would a fire show be without some danger..keep the kids back the adults can teke their chances

nice one - to be honest, my alltime favourite is solid wood core aluminum.... same as with firestaff, as weight and stability issues - to me - only are sufficiently solved with this combo...

You have vids on trident-manipulation?

Yes,
those "people" would be someone like me, who has actually done a course specifically in welding.

Welding stainless steel using mild steel wire in a MIG welder is a bad idea for two main reasons

1. the weld will be weaker than if you used a stainless steel filler rod
2. Corrosion will occur at the welded portion, not only where you can see it but also, most likely, within the weld and in the interior of the tube.

Chromium oxide develops within a stainless tube under high heat if the tube is not purged correctly.
Would you want a piece of equipment failing spectacularly in the middle of a fire show?

If you're going to pay for something to be made for you, you should expect it to be made correctly, and safely, in my opinion.

Aluminium needs the right equipment as well to get a decent weld, I wouldn't use it anyway, it conducts heat much quicker than any steel.

Hmmm...It may be that the wooden core is acting like a heatsink and preventing the heat from transfering up all the way to the grip.

Have you ever tried comparing an Aly tube with and without wooden core for heat transfer?

No I haven't, but it's a good point. I should, thanks for that.

So far I use the core simply for stability reasons. The staff simply doesn't bend, when I miss the catch.
