Ok, is it just me or do women have an unfair advantage when it comes to learning new moves? Firstly, due to life being unfair, most women can dance, or at least wobble competently whilst the majority of blokes are left standing rigid or look like they've got a wasp climbing up their arse, thus giving girls the advantage of looking kewl even by doing a 3bt Weave. Secondly, men have a REALLY painful target area which invariably gets twatted at full pelt whilst trying to learn new moves - most notably for me the 5bt weave and (more comically) a sort of upper thigh wrap where both pois looped round my legs and slammed into my groin at the same time (ohhh, how I laughed...) Finally, and I admit this is lame, but I was told once that all arguements should have 3 points, women are more slightly built and so can get away with using lighter poi (which don't hurt as much) and get hit less often...Are these fair points or is this just the grumbling of a poi-er who has had one-too-many child threatening moments?Oh and girls, before you complain, you have NO idea what 'nad pain feels like------------------I have only one burning desire....let me stand next to your fire

Of course I'm right...Just ask NYC!

Perhaps my previous 2 year-old post was a little bit misleading.

As to learning to look flexible, that's kinda a side effect of trying to look 'good'.

The whole reason most people want to be more flexible when doing poi or staff is so they look like they are dancing or more fluid etc etc.

Forget the specifics of flexibility, and try to be more fluid in your style...If, you can ever get into a dance studio, or outside a shop when it's dark inside (EG A big giant mirror somewhere near). Then spin while watching your BODY more than the poi.

Here's a few tips that have helped me...

Sway from side to side...roll your head when turning...bend your knees when you change direction...exaggerate all the motions of your body...swivel your wrists more than is needed...pause dramtically when doing stalls or when starting...and don't forget to look like you are concentrating hard, even when doing the easy stuff.

Try it, you should see a difference in a matter of minutes!

my first experience went something along the lines of

dave "hey ben learn poi"
ben "ok"
dave "yada yada yada three beat weave"

so im spinning the poi and all of a sudden smack, theres that split second where u realise there is about to be an onset of pain and theres nothing u can do about it, shortly followed by crumpling to the ground with the worst kind of pain. it was 6 months before i even though about picking up poi again

a friend of mine teachs poi as part of an aerobics class every now and again i go along and there are two types of ppl in the class, those who are all happy and carefree spinning their poi and those who are deathly afraid. suprisingly enough its always the guys that are deathly afraid.

so i personally feel that girls have an advantage, there is also that whole girls having more connections between the left and right side of the brain as well

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourself, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous and talented? Who are you NOT to be?

i havn't noticed a difference in the learning curve between guys and girls, but while watching both spinning, there is a difference in style, and i think that comes from the fact that guys are of a bigger build and more equiped for "power moves"(not necisaraly[sp] power moves, but looks like theres more power behind them) and the girls are much more fluid and graceful in their spinning...and i will be simpathetic and agree that girls have it rough when it comes to having breasts that get in the way and hurt when they get hit...i must also say that there is no pain close(when it comes to twriling) to getting hit really really hard in the nuts with both poi at once, which i have done and it dropped me to my knees, and i even had to ice to make it feel better.

The men around tend me to wrestle the poi into place while the women guide the balls. But the guys seem to have less fear and do more complex fire sooner.

This starts very early. In the classes I have seen boys pick wraps and jumping stuff up very quickly while the girls do it with dance.

Well i tell you now its not that easy for me. Ive been trying to get the btb weave, the reason i can't is not helped by certain parts of my anatomy. I have a biiigg bum! , i also have a big chest(even tho i'm thin elsewhere). This makes things a bit more difficult. Also i might not get nad pain, but it hurts enough when i hit my chest!. So not all girls automatically have an advantage.

I have noticed lthat most of the really technical discussions are conducted mainly by blokes. I have no idea about what a gilligan tnt btb up the nose round the trouser eg and in jiminy crickets hoogimaflip is (Sorry took it a bit far but some of it is like reading a chemical equation for me or work out the pythagorus therum square route of 501645.1111 recuring without using a calculator, or actually even with!!! )
As a fairy lass I am far more interested in being able to do moves well and makeing my transitions smooth and fluid. I can dance so i am trying to use the poi as an extention of my body. Things do get in the way but i think that is all about flexibility and stretching to push the body into more varied positions. Its amazing how quickly you can become more flexible just from a few stretches every day.
Guys are in general into more technical, complex things and girls more artistic and creative but that is only because that is the way we are socialised to be, so of course there are many exceptions to this rule as is clearly seen on this board.
I dont know if girls have advantages over guys I think it all evens itself out in the end.. basically anyone with more patience has an advantage over me so thats probably most of you!!

some people take a walk in the rain and others just get wet

Smiling is infectious. Please pass this on.
